The modern association derives almost entirely from one book: The moon-god Allah in the archeology of the Middle East (1994) by Robert Morey. It has a lot of factual errors that have been debunked by other archaeologists and historians.

The crescent moon as a symbol in Islam wasn't even a thing until the middle ages and probably comes from the Turks.
