After a while, the suit that had been my only company for what felt like years had become unable to move itself. A few days after killing off the last enemy suit of a huge squad that had been sent off to us, it rooted itself deep in place, and those roots refused to leave the ground. After a few hours, that giant hulk of mass opened itself, as if it was asking for me to leave. It took me days to be able to do so, I couldn't accept it, I didn't want to believe it, I shut off my eyes and stayed there, waiting for it to close itself again. I clumsily came out of it, walking again after was extremely difficult, and when I looked back, I saw the remains of my only friend.
Its colors were dark and lifeless now, it looked just like a husk, I could hardly believe it. Out of its body, a few weird leaves sprouted out, bearing the same color as human skin, their texture was like thin cartilage, it reminded me of touching someone's ear, and out of the middle of that bush, there was a dark red fruit, that beat just like a heart. I was starving, and didn't think twice before grabbing it for myself, as it was ripped apart from the stem, I heard a loud, guttural screech coming out of the remains of my suit. It sounded painful, like a death breath, but something in my head made me think of it as a last goodbye. I closed my eyes then ate it.
When I woke up again, I was inside this huge tub, filled with a sap-like slime. My body refused to move itself, but as my eyes darted around the room, I started feeling more and more at ease. The floor, the walls and the ceiling were all alien, incredibly so, but they were the exact kind of alien I had gotten used to by now, in fact, they looked weirdly like my suit. Then it spoke to me, it was a voice I had never heard before, but I instantly knew who was I talking with. Few words were said, but they echoed through my head, and I was able to understand everything. Things had gone back to like they were before, as if what had just happened wasn't more than a bad dream, the fruit I ate had changed me, and then made me sleep, I don't know how for long, but enough for my friend to soak up all the matter he could from that station, and drift off in space.
My body was frail now, but I felt like I was perfectly syncced with the ship. I was happy we could finally exchange words, and so euphoric I felt like I could speak for ours, yet we barely conversated anyways, it knew everything I did and vice versa. Those two small drones had dropped off of it back then, were now produced at an alarming rate, with multiple different forms, made from the same material as the ship, and I had been tasked with controlling them. Millions of those heart-like fruits grew on the walls, providing me with all the sustenance I needed, and making me feel closer to it with every bite.
We drifted off to a weird place in space, full of aliens of the most various kinds, probably one of the few places in the universe where we wouldn't stand out. I never left the ship, but the both of us went out on occasion, taking control of the same drone at once, we communicated with the others, trying to seem as friendly as a faceless mass of meat could be, and even watched the massive races that were held there on occasion. We toyed about with the idea of ever entering one of them, but we didn't think we'd be considered a proper ship, even for xeno standarts. Our new purpose was discovered very soon, as we went to investigate those rare screams that only we could hear somehow, finding massive shipwrecks at their source, every time. Those were made of the same material as us, and were promptly assimilated into our body every time. There wasn't even a bit of sapience left, and yet I could feel my friend becoming more complete with every one we consumed, its personality becoming more distinct, it became more talkative and assertive as time passed.
After wandering through bizarre worlds, and finding all kinds of unique xeno populations, we heard a call that was unlike any of the past ones. It was far too loud too ignore, and not pursuing it set us in constant pain, we followed the trail until we found what looked like a massive tree, floating in space. I felt like it was welcoming us, and hurried towards its roots, once we were close enough, those giant roots moved at a surprising speed, and quickly enveloped us. Their touch burnt, and I felt like everything we had worked so hard for was being torn apart, literally. It told me goodbye again, and that's the last thing I remember.
