No, it's not out in the open, the same way one wouldn't know if someone was left handed unless you kept watching them or specifically asked. But it still presents itself in public sometimes but it's not a big deal socially. I don't even watch anime but I have friends who lived and still live there, and there is an air of mutual respect there that is not taken advantage of.
