Yeah, but currently most people just use Zenyatta and Lucio. The problem with Mercy compared to the others is that Lucio and Zen can heal and still damage, Mercy can only either heal or damage, not both. Her healing is good, but a lucio and zen provide more than sufficient heals most of the time and they bring a lot more utility and damage than a Mercy. Don't get me wrong I love Mercy, but I think she needs something done to her kit to make her more competitive with the other supports.

From those Overwatch competitive pick rates images lately she's been one of the least picked characters, with Zenyatta and Lucio having a 95% pick rate. I don't think she's a bad character at all, but she just can't compete with what Zen and Lucio bring to the table, even as a Mercy main I think Zen and Lucio make a team stronger. She needs something to make her more viable, possibly an E ability that could overcharge her staff or give her some way to heal, but still do damage, that's pretty much her main issue, being limited to either only healing or only damage.

Are you people kidding? Mercy has a key advantage over Zenyatta. An enormous, gargantuan, GAME BREAKING advantage over Zenyatta that automatically grants her 60% pickrate over the robot.
She doesn't have to aim.
You can cry "muh skillcap" all you want, needing to aim is an objective disadvantage. Due to the unpredictability of movement, no matter how good you are, it literally adds an element of rng to your success rate and will therefore always, always be less consistent than someone who doesn't need to aim.
It's an especially severe disadvantage in this game, because 80% of the heroes don't have it. It's not like Counterstrike or some shit where everyone is on an equal playing field for the random headshot fiesta. If they don't have actual lock-on weapons, they have hitboxes the size of the fucking Hindenburg, or they fire so many rpm that they can just weapon spray in the general direction of the enemy team and roll off a 15% accuracy rate.
Why do you think every single one of the snipers is at the bottom of the tier list? There is no reason whatsoever to play someone who actually depends on accuracy when Blizzard offers no recompense whatsoever to make up for getting hard countered by facerolling the arrow keys. Fuck's sake, Widowmaker isn't even allowed to have a meaningful E. Her trap deals less damage than Trashnigger's despite the fact that his comes attached to HARD CC. It's the same reason Harambe has been tier 1 since the same launched. Literally all you need to do is stand there and nig and you're at 85% of your max potential. If you want to play a skill-dependent hero in this game you are a masochist and you will be dragged through the dirt.

I'm talking primarily more about in high end comp play. A great zenyatta will be a bigger asset than a great Mercy. It's not that hard to play Zenyatta either, I suck at aiming, but all I have to do is throw discord and start flinging balls. Zenyatta's strengths are his ability to dish out good damage, orb of discord people, put out decent healing without having to be close to a target, and an ult that can negate just about any continous damage for 6 seconds. Like I've said before, Mercy is the only support that can't both heal and dps, sure she's fine to play in quick play and such, it's not gonna make that huge a difference, but in higher level competitive play her downsides become much more of a hindrance, her only real advantage over Zen is that she heals more, which isn't as important when you also have a Lucio, and she can rez, may be better or worse than Zen's ult depending on the situation.
You bring up aiming, but Zenyatta doesn't have to aim to heal either and can still do damage regardless, even if he doesn't hit all his orbs he's already still at an advantage over Mercy. I want Mercy to still be viable and to be played a lot, but right now Zenyatta and Lucio clearly outclass her. Why bring a healer with slightly better heals who can't do damage than bring a healer who can heal a little less, but do good damage and put a mark of death on a target?

The big one is to just not run off alone. Even if you're flanking, you don't want to get too awful far from your team. It just makes you easy pickings, and pushing alone is just going to feed the enemy team's ults.

For starters, I wouldn't worry too much about pissing people off. Most players from what I've seen are neutral at best. Obviously you'll find a bad seed every now and then, but I wouldn't take it personally if someone yells at you. Some people blame others for their losses if they see characters like snipers even if they carried their weight. Also, the game's matchmaking system tries its best to match you up with people of similar skill level, so even if you're below average you'll still be able to enjoy matches and your teammates will be the same.
Playing with friends online makes the experience a lot better, especially if you can communicate with them! I play the game on the pc, and I'm always happy to make new friends.
As for tips for newcomers, I would recommend trying every character out for at least 10-30 minutes, if not an hour. You might be surprised at what characters you find fun! Plus, it will also give you a general idea of how the characters play and what their move sets are, making it easier to make knowledgeable decisions.
The map layouts all have spots for health kits. Most are place away from the places most people will go, so I'd recommend looking around a bit so when you get hurt you'll know where to go. Also, those places tend to be used as backdoors to guarded areas so keep your eyes open for any flanks (attacks from behind / above).
Other than that, I'd say to just have fun! The game's pretty fast-paced so even if you have a bad match it's not hard to move on. Just don't let loses get to you, and always strive to improve!
Also hide behind the Reinhardt shield. It's big and blue and yes, you CAN shoot through it.
