When did Wonder Woman suddenly start using a sword and shield so prominently? It used to be that all she needed was a lasso, bracelets and tiara, now she's brandishing sword and shield going around slaughtering people? The fuck? Did everyone just completely forget that Wonder Woman is supposed to be a peacekeeper whose main shtick is love and that DC's Amazons are supposed to be a peaceful society as per Marston's original concept?

Not to mention, the fuck does she need a sword and shield for? She has bracelets that can deflect pretty much anything and rip a reinforced steel door in two with her bare hands.

 No.988497

Probably because they wanted to ape the style of the other Themyscirians, who did use swords and shields because they didn't have the God-blessed weapons Diana was given. They can give her a sword and have her lead the warriors, which looks cooler than using a lasso to start a charge.

Also, from a movie standpoint, it's easier to choreograph sword fights than a sword vs rope fight, which would be much harder to pull off without stupid amounts of CGI and reshoots.

>Did everyone just completely forget that Wonder Woman is supposed to be a peacekeeper whose main shtick is love and that DC's Amazons are supposed to be a peaceful society as per Marston's original concept?

Marston's original concept doesn't sell merchandise, so instead of BDSM Wonder Woman stands for "girl power" that's vaguely defined (and rebranded constantly) in order to be as marketable as possible. Characters like Batman and Superman had big, continuous runs from conception all through the 60s and 70s leading to what the "modern" version is supposed to be, but Wonder Woman gets put on a shelf and dusted off when editorial decides they want a "wider audience".

The only defining run that Wonder Woman's had is Marston's, and no-one is allowed to draw from that because it's too sexy/weird/interesting to be packaged as SuperHero the Movie™: Girl Edition™. Wonder Woman changes all the time because she's literally just filler there to make up numbers. She's padding which Gal Gadot looks like she needed.

Kingdom Come started it.

I'd argue that George Perez was the one who planted the seeds for it with the Post-Crisis reboot, when he made Themyscira into a generic, Greek-myth-inspired matriarchal warrior society instead of the sci-fi kumbaya society that had only the loosest ties to Greek myth that it was before. To put it another way, he basically stripped away anything that made Wonder Woman comics even remotely entertaining. It was pretty much inevitable though, since DC has never had a single fucking clue on what to do with WW. Perez's reboot is the closest that they ever came to having one consistent vision for the character, even if he did completely neuter her mythos.

How is anyone supposed to believe this Jewish stick insect can carry and swing a sword and shield?

 No.988567

I miss the Lasso and Bracelets. They seem a lot more original than just a regular sword and shield.

embed related had a wonderful choreography. Sword & shield were mixed with lasso and wrestling. Even the tiara was used to headbutt a fury.

I'm not overly familiar with Wonder Woman runs, but my first thought was Greg "Lesbian Porn Aficionado" Rucka runs. He seemed to really ramp up the angle that Wonder Woman was a killer.

 No.988720

As far as non-comic appearances go the trend started in Injustice 1 where she had two stances, one with her lasso and otherwise unarmed, the other with the sword and shield. The sword and shield stance was totally worthless.

 No.988723

George Perez was the first to have her use swords and shields regularly, but, yeah, Kingdom Come was the first to outfit her like a Spartan.

 No.989082

>>988748

Sure it can, it's just an excuse that sword and shield fetishists use to have WW use them.

There's absolutely no reason for WW to use conventional weapons in her standard arsenal. None. If she happens to pick something up in the heat of battle, like Batman, and then discard it afterwards, OK, that's acceptable. But this modern retardation has got to stop.

 No.989323

Does she still have an invisible plane (actually it was more of a transparent plane, you could see her speeding through the air in a seated position), or is that considered "too cheesy"?

DC could always "Wakanda" the Amazon island and say they have VTOL, hypersonic aircraft with perfect stealth, to modernise the concept.

 No.989335

I don't think the plane's been seen since Crisis.

Of course, since the reboot she can fly, so it's not like she needs it.

>I don't think the plane's been seen since Crisis.

Apparently there were two attempts to bring back the plane post-Crisis. The first time was when John Byrne actually gave it a origin during his run: the Invisible Plane was actually a sentient alien lifeform capable of morphing into other vehicles. It ended up in the hands of Hippolyta (as the WW of the '40's, long story) and then Diana, both of them unaware of its sentience until it was manipulated into attacking Diana. It "died" saving people from a tidal wave during Greg Rucka's run and couldn't transform into anything besides a plane

The other time is after the One Year Later timeskip, where Batman just gave her a fucking stealth plane.

This is the great hyped female hero movie but face it, the movie was still really shit and not as feminist as people make it up to be. "LUL what do women know about politics AMIRITE guuuys she just uses eye for an eye logic so empowering! Stupid men! Oh and the holocaust didn't happen! HILARIOUS it's not politics or society's fault, it was Ares all along! HURR!"

I tell you, once Cpt Marvel comes out, it will fuck this movie right in the ass, like everything Marvel does.

 No.990448

And you know why? It won't even mention gender shit. It will just have a female protagonist, everyone is joking around and they'll just roll with it. That's how you handle it, not even mentioning the exception.

Lasso wasn't used until the end, and even then, not really that well. Just to bind one arm at the end. All the good bits were more in line with a rope dart/rope javelin/meteor hammer. It is more about the weight at the end. It also showcases why DC uses the animation companies they do, perfect blend of east meets west.

 No.997929

What I find puzzling is how they have all these athletic, fit looking women on Themyscira and then they cast a jewish stick figure to play wonder woman.
