The creator was originally just making a cool show about stuff he thought was funny, because he was a nerd who liked D&D and stuff like it. Then the show gets successful, so he starts hiring on other people to help with the show. His fame attracts the attention of assorted harpies who had weaseled their way into jobs with Cartoon Network… and then they took over. They slowly consumed the show and made it more tumblry and tried making it darker and edgier with all their ham-fisted attempts at lore and character development.
Instead of wanting to make the show he wanted to make, Pendleton Ward gave up. He was such a weak-willed sack of shit that he convinced himself that it was better to let a bunch of strong womyn take over his project and make it all about dating and daddy issues. He took a backseat role early on, and then eventually stepped down entirely, only showing up to do some voices and nothing else.

You were spot on until this point, you see those hangers on and shrews that youi mentioned (especially Sugar) helped push the show to DEEP levels, and while not bad at first, because I honestly liked the first few Ice King backstory episodes, but eventually they just did that shit for its own sake, and the incessant desire to return to status quo became so self defeating that eventually it became pointless to pay attention to the show as they follow the cycles of Buildup, Hype, Payoff, then Return, making everything pointless. This has happened tons of times (Flame Princess romance, Jakes family, Finns Dad\Losing an arm, Marceline losing her vampire powers, so on). On top of this you have Ward and the team just going out of their way to shit on the main characters and then act like they're different and deep because of it. It's all such a shit show it's only worth following for the cringe of the staff and just seeing how bad it can get for Finn himself.

What happened is that the writers got so far up their asses when season 2 turned up to be such a big success, they were allowed to have more "creative freedom" to make the show a bigger deal, good on paper, horrible on execution.
The pozzing really started with Natasha Allegri (the cunt who did the Bee & Puppycat scam) pushing for PB & Marceline to be lesbos, and it got worse from there on, with Jesse Molywhatheverhislastnamewas pushing for going the "philosophycal" route and be as pretentious as possible and rip-off Evangelion as much as possible, Xayaphone was allowed to be a head writer instead of a support one (he's responsable for Red Throne), etc.

honestly, when I first saw the show I was not super impressed if you actually watch the first few episodes they feel really clunky. overall it was a cute show with bright colors, nonthreatening fine for kids…. but (((they))) can never leave anything like that. The main strength of the show was always what could be accomplished within ten minutes. (As well as Jake shapeshifting. ALSO HATED THE EXPLANATION FOR WHY HE IS A SHAPESHIFTER, WHY COULDN’T HE JUST BE THE MAGIC DOG? FUCK) I differ from most posters here in that I believe Finn’s romantics are phenomenal cringe humor. However I am not even sure if that was entirely what they were supposed to be. Finn’s loneliness as The Human is important to the show, but it seems like the creators are missing their own point sometimes. Finn handles himself well when he isn’t being treated with Plot Radiation.
Quibbles aside: the show got cancer. Very few concepts can be milked beyond three seasons. There are high moments, but they get spread very thin. You stick around for your favorite side character until they get derailed too. For fucks sake, by the end even most-precious BMO was given a spooky storyline.

OG Adventure Time and Adventure Time after CN threw it and RS in the gutter are almost two different shows. I still watch it and I don't think it's bad, it's just that it is almost unrecognizable. It's turned into something that some people don't want to watch. I think after season 4 is when that transition started, with more focus on arcs, background characters, and romance. For a show to go on for so long and have so many storyboarders come and go it was almost inevitable. I knew it was going to happen when other writers left Adventure Time to work on other projects. What I don't like is how many people that dropped the show try to describe recent AT as gloomy and lifeless. All it is is uninteresting. There are too many episodes where the focus is something that nobody gives a fuck about, and to make matters worse there isn't an attempt at trying to be interesting.

I think the DEEPLORE could have worked if they just kept the damn tone right. I liked the Kid Going On Adventures fun and silliness as well as the Lich Oh Shit! tone, but then they got philosophical in ways that really didn’t make sense.
Also, the constant cucking of poor Finn really did a lot to make the show unappealing. The show began its death spiral after he broke up with Flame Princess and was dead after the Bee lady magically gave Finn his arm back.
I really did like it for a while, so it’s upsetting it just got so overwrought and downery. Like I said, it wasn’t necessarily the content, but the tone. That pseudo-philosophical bullshit just dragged the show down and made a show that should have been making you happy just make you feel empty inside.
I’ll probably go back and watch the rest eventually, though I know it will hurt
