In an interview with Time Magazine Godzilla details his life story and his start in the tokusatsu genre of film.
Godzilla: "When I first got the part in Gojira I was so excited you know. I was a young kaiju trying to get into acting and since this was post war Japan there wasn't a whole lot of work in that time for kaiju so it was very rough. I first heard about the script through my buddy Anguirus. He told me Toho was shooting a monster film and we both auditioned. I got the part but he didn't. I was surprised since he was a much better actor than I was and more experienced I would've figured he'd get the part. I felt bad about it and told him I can quit so he can get the part and he responded, "Goji what are you nuts? This is your opportunity take it man don't wait for me!". Fortunately, he got to appear later in the sequel but still, I'm grateful for him for helping me out all those times. He was a true friend."
