The second season fixes most of the issues from season 1, but the main problem is that Star's character arc is really badly paced like I know her character progression is supposed to be gradual but there's some spaztic directing up there. Is not that there's a lack of character development or it is slow is just that the directing is very spastic.
i.e. In a certain episode Star learns the lesson of not being such a Manic Pixie Dream Girl after this attitude is surprisingly acknowledged to have created much of the bad stuff that happened in season 1, this being Star is expected to take a couple episodes before it gets through her skull, but instead of being gradual, since we know Star is not the brightest bulb in the room, the series keeps on acting like if such lesson had never even happened for 4 episodes or so until at the fifth one Star has not only acknowledges to have learned the lesson but has done has characteristics fitting for it, looking entirely out of character for a moment.
I blame this on not knowing how to sync up episodic and plot episodes.
Is very weird because, besides that glaring defect, the series is actually pretty entertaining.

I get the impression that the Monster Bash will turn out to be a failure. This episode is the midseason finale, and it's been confirmed that there is going to be a season 4, so I think it's way too soon for the Mewman-Monster thing to be resolved.
Whoever/whatever is kidnapping the guests is probably doing it so the Mews and monsters will blame and attack one another, because they have some stake in keeping the conflict going.

The way it was actually played out wasn't half bad, it all was obviously just a setup to get rid of the most part of the "Slice of Life" facet of the show that everyone complained about, leaving just the romantic subplot and the main plot and adding adventures.
On the romantic subject, I think that Marco getting obsessed with Mewni made sense but I do agree that the way Marco and Jackie broke up was retarded, idk if it was because of the limited time in the episode but it was emotionally underplayed as fuck it didn't send any signals that MarcoxJackie was serious at all, and is using the first to setup the latter what makes it so out of character, like, he has dimensional scissors, Star and he literally jumped several dimensions per episode so the drama in here amounts as much as a Dragon Ball Z character dying.
As for what happens afterwards it really makes sense and is in character.

I wrote most of this on a different sub-board (guess which one,) and pissed myself off enough that I felt like spreading the rant. It’s about how they handled the “love triangle”:
Really, the whole thing was just so superfluous: Marco getting obsessed with adventuring on Mewni for poorly conveyed reasons and being really torn up about his feelings for Star after her emotionally-wrought confession and later near-death was all actually really good, there was great potential for drama in just that. Having Star suddenly give up on a relationship with Marco the instant he’s receptive to one and act like a bitch to him while pulling Tom back into a doomed relationship served no purpose and actively shat on the character growth of all three of them.
Seriously, if they want to make Starco a final-episode thing, they should have just kept Marco and Jackie together. There’s nothing stopping Marco from slipping back to Earth occasionally to keep ties with everyone except his spontaneous crippling autism, we could even have had some nice extra scenes of him showing Mewni off to Jackie and Janna and whoever.
Just have Star get so obsessed with Monster Rights Activism and/or panicked about her out-of-control natural magic that she neglects all her relationships to deal with it herself, and you can even still have the frostiness between her and him, except in a way that isn’t retarded.
Instead they regressed the character relationships to their earliest and lowest point, and then cocked up the Season 1 Love Triangle Recreation anyway by shoving in the personalityless bush-girl, who also out of nowhere went through a break-up, to have bland, chemistryless, puppy-love-but-like-totes-platonic cuddle sessions with Marco, just to highlight that Star is a bitch now and Marco’s a thirsty fuckboy.
This relationship drama is as bad as The Legend Of Korra. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say SvtFoE handles romantic entanglements worse than Legend of Korra, if one discounts the last-minute ratings trap bisexuality reveal of everyone involved in the love triangle which is probably gonna happen in this show too, seeing as it’s CURRENT YEAR Disney
The only excuse for this clusterfuck I can imagine is that they wanted to cut all the non-magical characters altogether with the migration to Mewni, but that’s a weak reason at best and gets completely and utterly invalidated by having Janna be brought back just to be a creepy cunt at Marco’s expense in the second to last episode anyway.
Tl;dr Jackie deserved better, and I say that as someone who doesn’t even care about Jarco.
