Given their recent announcement of that all d-list female heroes cartoon, which includes America Chavez in the lineup, I'm now starting to think that someone at Marvel thought this would all be part of a genius marketing scheme: Line up new books for all these awful characters, and hand them off to shitty writers for extra brownie points, then before the ink has even dried on the first issue, greenlight production and budgets for a cartoon starring all these characters. So far, all they've really managed to do is offload a few shitty series onto scholastic book fairs, which probably gives them some really wonky an unreliable sales numbers. As the other anon pointed out, girls love The Hunger Games and Katniss, and it isn't like you could consider her the embodiment of the Eternal Feminine, but point is, she is still a girl. Compare to Revolutionary Girl Utena, which was trying to make a point (and despite that, it was still a pretty good anime), and you will find out it was liked mostly by men and feminists who liked the point it was making. Thing is, Utena is masculine as hell, and thus men in general can relate to her better, just like women in general can relate better to shoujo protagonists even if most men wouldn't.

I've never bothered with the books only seen a bit of the movies, but I imagine Katniss falls into this trapping. She's feminine, but not weak but she's no Conan either.
