Evil Gwenpool breaks the fourth wall so hard that she's even aware of editorial. The editorial that apparently won't let her kill Mileserman, and so it's promptly rewritten as Miles having a bad dream.
Which gets back to how future Gwenpool became evil in the first place. Not only does nothing she does have any real consequences, but editorial out-and-out screwed her for trying to save a friend, something editorial thought was wrong.

Gwenpool apparently cares. She's a big fucking Marvel fangirl, so the idea that she fucks all of that up pisses her right off. Gwenpool swears to never do anything that Evil Gwenpool did, and her commitment to that decision retcons Evil Gwenpool from the comic entirely. The future where she's from never comes to pass.
Unfortunately, in the process Gwen has apparently lost her brother Teddy. On the plus side, we get more magic goth waifu.

The series hasn't been entirely great, but as far as writing a meta-gimmick story goes, that's a pretty good one. Someone with a 4th wall perspective becoming fed up with the editors and writers fucking up every good thing they do makes a lot of sense. With her knowledge, she could essentially end all conflicts and save the Marvel Universe from itself… and instead, it would all just get retconned or canceled, because it would mean no more conflict, or some random act of editorial fuckery would make her miserable for it.

I'm gonna say it: I underestimated the book. I thought it was just a shitty wannabe Harley Quinn-tier book that people only liked because Gwen was cute and the rest of the Marvel lineup is shit. But once we got to this Future Gwen arc and Gwen got confronted with the consequences of her sociopath behavior, it seriously stepped up. And I'm a fucking sucker for "The hero does the right thing in the face of temptation" moments. She could've become Evil Gwen and cause bad shit and become a successful book at the expense of the other characters, but she didn't because behind all the clichés and meta-lampshading, she still loves those characters and wouldn't want to hurt them if she could.
Also, apparently Gwenpool reads DC and Indie according to the author. Vid related.

Marvel did a Gwen Stacy month for variant covers back during Secret Wars, and the variant for Deadpool wound up being unusually popular among the cosplay community. Being the grand House of Bad Ideas that it is, Marvel then thought that this meant the concept was worth testing the waters for and turned to their resident freelance go-to guy for shitty ideas, Chris Hastings, to basically invent them a character on the spot. They then stuck the character in a backup feature in Howard the Duck, and it was well-received enough that it got turned into its own ongoing monthly title after a few issues.
Gwenpool’s real name is Gwen Poole, with no relation to Stacy. She’s a girl from ‘the real world’ who was basically a huge comic book fan and came over to Universe 616 during Secret Wars. Depending on who’s handling the writing and art, this varies from ‘surprisingly well-done’ to ‘exactly as cancerous as it sounds ‘.

If that happens, (Ignoring the wormhole sized plot holes implications of that regardless of the ending) I'm betting on Hastings explaining that no matter what the ending is, whatever Gwen we see from now on is just a character imprint created by Editorial, after all, Editorial does want Gwen to become a successful prankster god lolsorandumb villain. She's already portrayed like this on "The Champions" for not caring about "muh racism".

Gurihiru's art has been Gwenpoole's saving grace. As we've seen, when GuriHiru isn't the artist the comic sucks because the writing is mediocre.
No.958588
>>958577
It's mediocre because the artist can't do justice to Hasting's writing.
That's thing about comics, it's a team effort. Gurihiru brings out the best in Hastings and Hastings brings out the best in Gurihiru. This is why manga succeeds with a consistent creative team, while mainstream comics fall flat with their artistic musical chairs.
No.958593
>>958588
>It's mediocre because the artist can't do justice to Hasting's writing.
Hasting's writing isn't very good.
When GuriHiru is doing the art I suspend the disbelief, but it's less "other artists don't do Hasting's justice" and more "Hasting's writing on Gwenpoole is mediocre and that shows when GuriHiru isn't around to make up for it".
No.958594
>>958577
Gurihiru has the ability to properly give Hastings' writing a sense of dynamism and energy. They also seem to be one of the only people at Marvel capable of visualizing fourth-wall breaking scenes… But… >>958593 is right. Without a great artist for cover for him, the sheer mediocrity of Hastings' works really shows through.
No.958596
>>958593
>>958594
It's clear early on that Hastings treats issues that don't have Gurihiru doing the art as filler. He works out how many issues Gurihiru are going to be available and writes stories that take advantage of it.
That's why after the first arc, you get a bunch of unimportant stories until Gurihiru gets back on the book. He knows that Gurihiru gets what he's trying to do and Gurihiru clearly enjoy working with him.
No.958602
>>958596
It's true he treats the non-GuriHiru issues as filler, but when you go back and look at his writing even in the main issues, if you look at it separate from GuriHiru's art the same trends poor storytelling is there. It just looks nicer because GuriHiru is a great artist. Take the 5 or so pages she's having a chat with Iron-Doom: That's a really badly written conversation even in the context in which it's occurring, and the way he writers Iron-Doom is god-awful. Now granted Iron-Doom is the shittiest interpretation of Dr.Doom, but Hasting's version isn't "better", it's just shitty in a different way. Instead of not developing at all, we have a character who has fully developed into something new off-page and with no explanation for any of it. He really could have been anyone talking to Gwen there.
Gwenpoole is a bad book because it's got all the problems of marvel, just with better writing and amazing art. If GuriHiru was given other better characters to work with and a good writer, they could make an amazing comic run. But as it stands Marvel has essentially stuck them in what will be remembered as just an okay comic book.
GuriHiru knows how to give scenes weight and actual feelings of movement and energy. It's not perfect for all stories, I think GuriHiru would be shit at doing a Punisher book for instance, but if they'd been given a character like Hulk (not Cho) or other characters who are really physical and throw their weight around they'd be incredible.
No.958663
All this talk about Gurihiru's art reflects poorly on the comic, because it suggests that nobody would care for it were it just another money pit carried solely by Hastings' writing and a stable of fill-in artists.
No.958671
>>958663
It's hard to separate writing and art in comics (that's how Stan Lee has managed to get away with being just an ideaguy for so long). Gwenpool is a lot less fun without Gurihiru, but it's not like America would become worth reading if they were working on that.
America might be a bad example since - maybe - having a better artist might inspire an otherwise mediocre writer to be more creative but the author of America is completely disconnected with reality anyway.
>>958602
I'd suggest that 'just an OK comic book' is an exceptional accomplishment given the current state of Marvel: Iron Doom is just so shit that he sucks the fun out of something otherwise entertaining. But I don't really know at what point making fun of editorial mandates crossed over with the actual editorial mandates, so you might be right.
No.958816
>>958663
>it suggests that nobody would care for it were it just another money pit carried solely by Hastings' writing and a stable of fill-in artists.
I mean, would you? I don't like Gwenpoole, but I read it because GuriHiru is a really good artist and manages to draw enjoyment out of what their given despite the odds. When they're not the artist the book is just as bad as other Marvel tripe.
I don't hate Hastings, I just think this isn't the book he should be writing. He's not great at writing conversations between two sincere actors, it always sounds like one party is just there to further along the plot. I don't think the problems with Gwenpoole are all his fault since the character is awful in concept and there's not a lot his writing can do to fix the underlying issues, but still.
>>958671
>I'd suggest that 'just an OK comic book' is an exceptional accomplishment given the current state of Marvel
Hey I'm not gonna argue otherwise, but it's still just OK. That being said, it's amazing that modern Marvel has managed to produce something actually decent and has decided to kill it off. It shows that we will never approach even a medium level of quality coming from Marvel comics ever again.
No.958819

What Hastings has done with the character's meta nature is interesting and noteworthy enough on its own, regardless of the art. For someone to do what he's done with a mainstream comic at this point in time is pretty great.
