I'll be honest with you I wonder if it turns out the whole fake outrage was a way to promote the movie. Like the pearl clutchers in the media cry foul over this movie for bullshit reasons. This causes people to go see it to spite the media. Any credence to this theory?

Yes and no. It was Disney own news sites like ABC warning the public not to see joker.

You mean like EA's "Hell is not a game" campaign that featured christian protesters speaking against the upcoming Dante's Inferno?
the funny part is that Hell is in fact the name of a game. It was a cyberpunk adventure game for PC & 3DO.
They also tried a campaign with the message "Hate is not a game", this time aimed at promoting (((diversity))). And once again they fucked up because HATE is a vert shooter for the Amstrad CPC
