Holy shit, this thing looks like one of those Turkish telenovelas. Is there any hope for this movie, /co/?

I was actually feeling very excited for it… Until I saw King Arthur by Guy Ritchie and now I dread seeing the same kind of movie as Aladdin

>Will Smith as genie

Robin Williams carried the first Aladdin movie on his shoulders. I actually forgot Robin Williams' name. I do wish that he hadn't killed himself Will Smith is charismatic, but he's no Robin Williams when it comes to these kind of characters. Jafar needs to be able to impose himself over Aladdin. Keeping his hat on would help with this as it looks like Aladdin is bigger than he is from that promo. Aladdin looks ok. Jasmine looks cute. I'm assuming that's Apu or Iago in the back right as those are the only characters missing. Jafar is fucking Iago now? I really do think Genie should have been cgi or a literal cartoon with Will Smith as VA. A Who Framed Roger Rabbit sort of cartoon among a cast of normal people. He's a genie after all. He doesn't need to look realistic. It will be insanely hard to top the genie that Williams portrayed and I honestly don't Will Smith is going to be able to do it.

I found this film while browsing /islam/ not a Muslim, just wanted to ask about why they're sensitive about showing the Quran. I'd have watched it even with the somewhat shoddy 3D animation if it weren't for the social justice overtones. "Muh equality", black slaves/"white" (Arabian/Iranian) overlords (even if Muhammad is portrayed with similar skin). I'm not sure how Muslims reacted to the film.

They only have their hands on Venezuela, though that might change soon. There is one Brazilian channel that licenses Turkish soap operas, but I can't imagine people tunning it to watch them since Mexican and the local series are still popular

In any case they have been making historical themed telenovelas set in the Ottoman Empire for quite some time now probably to romanticize the period where Turkey was still relevant.

Muhammed doesn't appear in this movie tho. That is the difference from Islamic movies from typical Christian ones that tell the Nativity or the Passion is that there is only so much you can do, and you have to walk on eggshells. This movie takes place during pre-Islamic Arabia which is the closest acceptable thing you can do in Islamic media. Two examples come to mind:

- The Message made by Mustapha Akkad who tried to bridge the gap between the West and the Islamic world by telling the origin of Islam, but he could only feature Muhammad's uncle as the main protagonist.

- And the Messenger of God, which IIRC was entirely told from his point of view.

And you can only tell that. Try telling the first invasion of the Christian world like the conquest of Alexandria, Jerusalem and the Levant and that shit will get criticized in the West. You could try to tell the conquest of the Sassanian Empire, but I never heard of it. I do know of a Turkish movie where they tell the fall of Constantinople from the Ottoman's "heroic" point of view. But that shit is hardly "Biblical" or Quranic.

Can't have the leads be too attractive or else the audience will feel too alienated (though I don't know, I personally know some really thirsty virgins that literally lust after Daisy Ridley so who knows). If you want a hot girl in a movie, you are only getting it into straight to blue-ray garbage like Scorpion King V.

>I remember the first turkish soap opera (Binbir Gece) got a nice reception here in Brazil, it got kinda popular. But after that, the other soap operas the channel presented were not as viewed as this one.

I have vague memories of people discussing that show back then too, but other than that yeah, those shows aren't as huge. I actually read in a recent article that they can barely keep up with our productions. Though I did hear they do very well in Chile and Argentina.

The original tale was, but this is an adaptation of the original animation which is Arabic instead. Besides if they were loyal to the source material, they'd have to set it in Xinjiang and have Aladdin being a fucking Uighur and we obviously can't have that with China openly and shameless ethnically cleansing Muslims over there. Which is a shame because I actually like a version of the 1001 Nights that features Aladdin played by some Chinese dude.

I always assumed that Turkish dramas are popular in Eastern Europe/Balkans and South America because they tend to have the same kind of over-the-top acting and extreme melodrama that shows from those countries do. Russian TV shows are also somewhat similar but they tend to tone down the melodrama in favor of extreme violence or satire. Or at least the old Soviet ones did.

>"In the first movie we felt like she didn't have enough of a goal, it was really just to meet a guy"

What the fuck.

She is the complete opposite to that. The movie uses symbolism of her freeing birds from a cage to represent how she feels about her life and marriage; that it will trap her. Later on when Jafar takes control she is put into her worst nightmare, forced into being a subservient wife for someone she hates.

What she wants, which is represented and almost practically described in no uncertain terms, is to be free of her duties.

Just like Genie.

This isn't an accident or a coincidence. They didn't have two characters both put in a similar circumstance by mistake. It's called a fucking parallel.

THIS

In order to be "progressive" the stronk feeemale characters have to be "better" than Leia. Let's not forget that despite plot-wise being a damsel in distress, Leia shit-talked everybody and was instrumental in her own rescue (the one who started shooting back at stormtroopers, giving Luke and Han cover to jump down the garbage chute). This kind of shit has to be ignored or revised for their narrative to work.

It also doesn't make any sense. Its forbidden for non-Muslims to marry Muslim women - its okay for Muslims to marry Christian and Jewish women without needing to convert so long as their children are raised as Muslims. The only time in history I heard a Christian marrying a Muslim was Ivan the Terrible marrying Qochenay, a woman from the Caucasus tribes and she had to convert to Eastern Orthodoxy to be accepted. I never, ever, ever heard of Arabs willingly handing over their daughters to be married to foreigners that weren't Muslims.

Couldn't they have just given Jafar a son like the vizier had in the story? You can still have Jafar plot to rule Agrabah, just that he'd rule through his son. He'd look for the genie as a back-up plan. He's go all out on conquering with magic once the deal fails, he and/or his son get driven out (the son could replace Iago as Jafar's confidant), and he gets his hands on the lamp.

If the Sultan is trying to marry his only daughter to a prince of Skanland, he's pretty much handing over rule of his kingdom to this foreign nation. The biggest question is obviously "Why?", but I doubt the deeper reasoning will be explored by this movie.

Since Disney is devoid of creativity at the moment, I think it's safe to assume that Skanland is an already existing Disney Kingdom, but shifted to a time before the events of the main movies. Or 10,000 years and an apocalypse after those movies, depending on your reasoning for Genie's knowledge

Since all we know is the name and the fact that the potential prince is blonde, the kingdom of Skanland could be from Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, or Tangled, since those five feature blonde royalty.

Perhaps Sultan was a tragic /ourguy/ who wanted to prevent his people from sliding into Islam? Perhaps one of the many magic users from those countries threatened him into surrendering without open conflict? Perhaps he sought to genetically distinguish Agrabah's royalty from the masses by making his descendants whiter? We'll need more information before we can form a better theory.

Asspull guess, but I think he's going to die in the movie. And he'll probably know he's dying, which will probably end up being something Jafar is doing to him, and wants to marry her off before he bites it. He'll die, something about Jasmine not being able to to be the ruler because she's a woman, muh feminism song, and bunch of other shit happens. The movie ends with Jafar beaten, Genie freed, and they don't bring up Jasmine and Aladdin marrying but somehow Jasmine becomes the Sultan and everyone claps.

At least that's what it feels like DIsney will do. It will manage to shit on the old movie, inject needless prog shit, while tearing down all the main human male characters in the process.

The genie is the emotional core of the movie, and both his and Aladdin's character arcs revolve around each other. Aladdin shows genie that humans can be good people, and genie shows Aladdin that he already was the person he wanted to be. The ultimate tests for this are the 2nd and 3rd wishes. Genie isn't supposed to actually care about his master but when Al's life is threatened he bends the rules to save him, making the 2nd wish for him. His trust in Aladdin's goodness pays off with the 3rd wish where Aladdin wishes him free, when he could have had anything (which is supposed to indicate Al's benevolence since he's basically a king treating a slave as a person). Aladdin's trust in the genie is cemented by the genie going out of his way to save him. Genie had already come to care about Aladdin by wish 2.

There's some dumb aspects to this though, like Aladdin waiting until the last second to free genie when genie had demonstrated his loyalty and freeing him any time after that would sinply make him a more powerful ally (although maybe he didn't have the opportunity, I haven't seen the movie in like 8 years). Also, if Aladdin is such a good guy why was the onus on his slave to do the right thing first?

You’re right about the plot surrounding the wishes being a bit dumb. I just re-watched Aladdin last week and something that really stood out to me is the fact that the plot kinda just phones it in once it gets to the third act. After Jafar is discovered to be bewitching the Sultan and is ousted, Aladdin and Jasmine are set to be married and the conflict is seemingly resolved. If it were a classic fairy tale, the movie could have just ended right there with a “they lived happily ever after”.

What ends up happening, however, is that Aladdin is seemingly paranoid about being discovered as “not being a prince”, which he uses this as an excuse to not release the Genie. Without reading into it, this raises questions about how exactly the Genie granted Aladdin’s wish to be a prince in the first place. If the Genie literally turned Aladdin into a prince, then he’s a prince; he can’t be discovered to be a “fake” prince. That being said, I think it’s implied in this particular scene that Aladdin is really just keeping the Genie around because Aladdin still has self-confidence issues and still thinks he depends on the Genie. He’s scared that if the Genie goes, then everything will come crashing down somehow. That interpretation makes this one part of the plot reasonable, but this issue gets brought up again later.

When Jafar gets the lamp, he somehow “strips” Aladdin of his “princeness”. Literally, all he does is take his prince clothes from him, but everyone regards this as somehow having reversed the first wish. Hence, when the question of the third wish comes up, Aladdin has to choose between freeing the Genie and wishing to be a prince again. This conflict makes absolutely no sense unless you accept that Jafar somehow did undo Aladdin’s first wish. If that is the case, then it either means that the Genie really did only give Aladdin some new clothes and an entourage, or it means that Sorcerer Jafar had the ability to undo the wishes of the omnipotent Genie.

Even ignoring the implication of that plot point, there is still another issue with the third wish. The entire reason Aladdin would wish to be a prince again at that point is because “the law” says he can’t marry Jasmine unless he is one. At this point, anyone with a brain is probably wondering why this is even a problem for the royal family of a (presumably) absolute monarchy that can just rewrite the law to suit their needs. But, of course, the movie demands a moral conflict, and so this point is just ignored until Aladdin does the “right” thing and releases the Genie. Immediately afterwards, the Sultan comes up and does exactly what the audience was guessing earlier, retroactively making the whole conflict pointless.

tl;dr the conflict and its resolution make no sense and there’s no consistency

I'll point out that earlier drafts of Aladdin had the genie with no restrictions on how many wishes he can do. Indeed, you can see in the cut song Humiliate The Boy Jafar making genie go through way more than 3 wishes.

SOOO, I'd say the problem you point, at least to a point, roots in the decision to change how the genie's magic works. I suspect to avoid questions of "How come Aladdin just didn't wish for X" and make Al need to save his wishes.

When Jafar revealed him, it called into question his birthright. The wish would have had to either change his ancestry or the lawyer genie mechanic would have had to come into play.

If you think about it, the latter happened. Aladdin's father is revealed to be the king of thieves in the 3rd movie. If this was a side effect of the wish, then Aladdin is the prince of thieves. The parade and such were just Genie dressing it up as is his wont, not a part of the wish

Just compare this to the original with its establishing shot of a sweeping aerial view, distanced landscaping, and army of marching extras; resulting in a general sense of breath. Meanwhile the remake is so claustrophobic and tinky it's just an embarrassment. Could Disney not afford a larger set?

I read a non-Disney version of the original story a few years ago. Fun facts: It was most likely written by a Syrian, used China as the exotic far-off land, and didn't focus on the princess or romance. Her desires aren't mentioned, half of her involvement is creating more problems by being stupid, and her value is mostly that her husband gets to inherit a lot of shit from her father. Also, Aladdin is a ruthless killer when he needs to be.

I would say that Robin Williams carried the original Aladdin and his absence is strongly felt in the remake. >>1060204 There were some definite call-backs to the original and Will Smith tried his best, but he's no Robin Williams when it comes to comedy. If I remember correctly, genie was written for Williams specifically.

In retrospect, the genie getting married made sense for Will Smith's genie, but it would have been out of character for Robin William's genie. Williams was also a lot better at showing emotion and character, which this new genie seemed to lack.

>>1060957

No. She gets an empowered moment where she gets the captain of the guard to have a change of heart. She also becomes the next sultan, which was pretty pointless.

>>1061341

The original takes place in China, which was the far east. Aladdin and a few other stories were added in later by a frenchman, but it is believed that he got Aladdin from a syrian merchant.

>>1047483

It was ok. Some parts were phoned in and some characters could have been cut (the handmaiden). Jasmin's songs about standing up for herself and her rise to the position of sultan seemed pretty forced and meant to appeal to little girls. There were a ton of black people in the movie, and I don't mean middle eastern black. They were american black and it stood out a lot. Aladdin was well cast and I liked Jasmin and Jafar as well. Jafar was better off earlier in the film when he straight out kills a henchman without batting an eyelash. He seemed to have been toned down a lot by the time he tosses Aladdin into the ocean. The handmaiden really didn't serve a purpose and her scenes would have been better used for genie. Smith as genie wasn't that bad and he had his moments. He just had William's shoes to fill and that wasn't possible.

>>1049443

Crews has a ton of energy and probably would have made a good genie.

Contrast with traditional animation where you literally just draw a character and then draw them again in a few poses plus in-between frames, in CGI they would have to design a full 3D model, rig it, texture it, map the performance capture to its body (or do 3D animation on it), and then put it through the VFX pipeline. If Smiff just dances lazily they can instead drag and drop him into the scene with basic compositing in the one shot where that's needed (riding the ostriches or whatever).

Did they watch the original? Her goal is to get out from under her father's wing and experience the world outside. That's why she disguises herself to run around the streets. That's why Aladdin wins her heart with a song that goes "I can show you the world."

>There isn't any evidence of the author being a Maronite, though…? Nobody knows who the fuck he was and given the area and timeline, it's most likely he was Muslim. Not that it matters.

Aladdin was not part of the 1001 Nights. It was added much later by the French guy who compiled it. Most of the tales were by anonymous authors, but Aladdin and Ali Baba in specific were written by a Syrian storyteller named Antun Hana Dyab. There is more information on him online in case you are curious but he was most definitely a Christian

(Antun is not an Islamic name, but the Arabic form of Anthony, which is traditionally Christian name). Not all Arabs are Muslims after all.

She's completely out of imagination, is constantly bored, so that the worst stuff entertains her and she constantly hates on things she knows she wouldn't understand.

But she also makes super weird decisions going against her opinions.

Despite my warning and the stuff I mentioned above, she watched Jurassic World 2 (what the hell?), Aladdin, Fantastic Beasts 2 and Mama Mia 2.

I could have recommended her at least 20 movies more to her taste which are a billion times better (even though I don't have interest in them). And whenever me and my brother watch a movie and talk about it, it's always like "Well too bad this movie is too adult and deep for mom right?"
