So I went to the comic store today to finally complete my collection of Dark Knights Metal (I know "that guy buys comics yadda yadda").

A mother entered the store with her son. The woman behind the counter was like "How old are you?" He replies: "7".

The mother went to the counter "I'm looking for comics for my son, something with superheroes." The woman behind the counter was like "Thats great, but it's gonna be hard, since I'm not allowed to sell him most of this stuff since it's not age appropriate."

I've read some complaints here during New 52 that comics have become too edgy but I never really cared, but at that moment I felt kinda sad. Weren't comics supposed to be for kids? Now it's hard to find some age appropriate capeshit? What, is he supposed to read garbage like Adventure Time comics or something Franco Belgian?

Is it a good development to make the content more mature or is it nonsense anyway considering the subject matter in those comics?

I mean Dark Knights Metal for example, amongst genocide, has a friggin talking ape and Plastic Man…

Making comics more "mature" and extreme has been a problem readers have complained about for decades. It got really bad in the 90s where everything was extreme to the extreme. It's better for the kid to learn now how shit the comics really are and for the mother to learn just how inappropriate they are for young children to actually read. He'd be better off at the very least watching the movies and his mom buying him action figures based on the movie versions.

You're probably right, I find it extremely hard to get into comics anyway. If I hadn't watched videos about it for years, Metal would have completely lost me.

Well it STILL often lost me with the events of Infinite Crisis being mentioned etc.

That's the thing too. Even if it wasn't edgy overly serious shit in comics, it's impossible to get the full picture of everything you need to read to know what's going on fully. Even just knowing where to begin for a series is overly complicated. No new reader is gonna wanna take that plunge knowing it's impossible to make sense of without making elaborate charts.

Thing is, even if you read a Reboot, soon characters will appear which aren't introduced much, because the readers are still expected to know them.

This all can be summed up in a simple way. Big two comics aren't written in a logical story structured way.

Most cape comics today are written either for manchildren or hipsters who are obsessed with capes. This trend started back in the 70s. Up until that point, majority of capes were written with children in mind. However there were still fanboys obsessing over Spider-Man and Robin, who were older than the target audience. Many of these capefags were not able to just enjoy capes for what they were, and wanted something more mature.

Then these capefaggots were let into the industry in mid 70s. They of course began to change cape stories to appeal to their own tastes. So faggots who mainly consumed cape stories for children began to try to write 'mature' stories. That gradually alienated existing readership, and mismanagement or cancellation of adult oriented books (westerns, war comics, crime, horror) to make more room for capes decimated those genres and their readeship.

Speculator bubble disguised decreasing readership, but once it popped damage done was obvious.

Comic writers are shut-ins who are out of touch with most of the world. Embracing SJW shit was their way of trying to connect with the "Zeitgeist" despite the fact it really wasn't there.

They don't know what people really want, and so they keep making shit nobody likes.

Another way to look at it, those fans took what was simply stories for kids super seriously and then had to have every story, background detail, continuity and even the inconsistencies some how have to make sense. Then when they all piles up into stories that no one can understand without prior knowledge the universe gets a reboot.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Phantom comic popularity is from that fact it's kept itself relatively grounded, no universe reboots and not really worrying about hardcore continuity that only a few Phans Phantom fans will even notice or complain about.
