How long before they make him gain super powers by eating soy instead of spinach? Have some classic Popeye instead, I used to have a VHS as a kid with three episodes and this was one of them.

I have been wondering, how were these episodes aired? Was this run in theaters before the main movie? Apparently it's from 1937 according to archive.org

Ironically Popeye was one of the first newspaper cartoons to be bowdlerised, when the syndicate forced Segar to cut out all the fighting.

They also told him Alice the Goon was too terrifying and was giving children nightmares, so he responded by sticking her in a dress and a little hat with a flower, and announcing that she was reformed.

 No.1038834

I had a DVD of Popeye classics when I was little. I remember the humor being slapstick very similar to the Looney Tunes. I can't see how they can make a modern Popeye with the same "violent" slapstick it had. Reboots have always been around but I don't understand why you wouldn't just make a new show since the reboots are so different. TMNT has been rebooted quite a few times, but they've always been action and dealt with different arcs that might differentiate based on style, tone, and humor. But reboots like Teen Titans Go are different on a fundamental level, so why not make an entirely different show? Why use the same setting and characters is you go from action comedy to comedy for 6 year olds? Just make a new show. I'm no hardcore fan of popeye, but if the characters aren't similar at all and the show is entirely different why reboot it?

Cartoons back then weren't aired, they were shown exclusively in theaters, then later sold as 8mm or 16mm film reels for home viewing.

Very few people owned a television before the sixties, they were just seen as expensive and unneccessary in a world saturated by more newspapers, magazines, comics, almanacs, and radio stations than anyone could ever hope to keep track of. Hell, here in the US millions of people only ever bothered getting one so they could watch the Moon landing.

A large amount of Teen Titans Go!'s comedy is derived from other DC characters/the DC universe, in general, and comparisons between it and the original show, to the point where the two are officially crossing over now. Whereas this doesn't really acknowledge the original show in any way nor does it do anything with any miscellaneous characters.

I can't remember the exact episodes, but there were a few where Bruto has some spinach and fucks shit up. I think there were also a few where Olive Oyl got stronk after downing a can.

>Does spinach even do anything for Bruto? I haven't seen all of the old cartoons, but I can't remember him ever caring about popeye's stash except to keep it away from him.

The purpose of Bruto's character was to show that you can't just go full on meat only in your diet, I think a few episodes have him dealing with this factoid. Funny that it all came from a typo in a chart on vitamins for Spinach. Also yeah he does at least know that they affect Popeye, there's one episode he keeps a can with him just to revive his pal.

 No.1039210

>>1038965

What a load of shit. All of TTG's comedy is derived from the first thing that popped up into the writers's heads. There isn't an ounce of wit in any joke they write. The shows have nothing in common other then setting and name. There characters are essentially unrecognizable derivatives.

 No.1039220

>yet nobody other than Popeye seems to recognize that fact most of the time

It's just the Popeye is the only one who actually likes spinach, everyone else hates this shit. I recall one cartoon where he was unable to feed it to his nephews or whatever, until they realized they need spinach powers to save the day.

>>1039196

>Funny that it all came from a typo in a chart on vitamins for Spinach

It's not vitamins, it's the iron content. If there is one thing that needs updating in Popeye, it's that they need to replace spinach with cabbage.

 No.1039221

>>1039220

I remember that one too, I think there were a few of those episodes actually. I'm pretty sure the only recurring character who never ate the stuff was Wimpy, but I could be wrong there.

I've actually got a similar thing going on IRL actually. I'm the only one in my immediate family who actually likes spinach, and will eat it in any form.

 No.1039225

I remember Bluto eating Spinach once in the comics, Popeye had a tiny restaurant on the end of a pier, that only served spinach, and Bluto didn't want spinach, so Popeye rammed it down his throat, then Bluto got super-strong and decided he liked spinach too, and Popeye decided he had to beat Bluto up before he became too strong, and they fought and demolished the little restaurant.

That's about as much plot as we ever got after Segar left and we stopped getting Sea Hag and Alice The Goon and OG Wotasnozzle and Ham Gravy stories.
