During the Doomday Clock thread, an old questions came to my mind again. I've read the Capullo/Snyder New52 run (yes I know) and one thing keeps bugging me because I just don't understand if its trying to be clever, or was resolved, or was an edgy twist or just a mistake.
First, it was confirmed that the Killing Joke continuity was retconned. Then, during Batman New52s origin story, Bruce had to face his first villain as vigilante, the Red Hood Gang. You don't find out anything about them, except the leader keeps grinning and in the end falls into chemicals (like Joker did in Killing Joke).
In Endgame, Joker forces Harley to wear the Red Hood costume to tease Batman. However, it's not the Red Hood gang's one, but the Killing Joke one, with cape and all. So the Killing Joke was canon again.
But THEN it turns out the Joker may or may not be hundreds of years old due to a Lazarus pit under Gotham.
So what the hell is going on there?
Is the Red Hood leader Joker who looked normal before falling into the chemicals? Was Killing Joke canon and the Red Hood gang just a stupid coincidence which Batman never mentions?
If Killing Joke never happened then, why would Jason Todd wear a Red Hood mask with no connection to the Red Hood gang (or does he?). Was the Joker on the photos from Gotham's history actually there or just a reflection?
It just hurts my brain, not because it's a plotpoint to give the already edgy New52 Joker a "whats actually his backstory" twist (because the Lazarus pit actually IS there). But I wanna know if it was a mistake or not and what I missed.
