I don't really think of hellboy as being roided out, I mean, he was a pretty big guy in the first comic and had abs throughout the series, but I imagine him as a guy you'd find at the pub rather than a guy you'd find at the gym

I don't think they wanted to give him the skullet, or appear to be culturally insensitive with a chonmage. Manbuns have been made fun of to hell and back, which means they're left with the numetal look. And for whatever reason, they think oversaturating the red in the backgrounds, in the other characters, was a good move. Comicbook artists haven't been able to ape what Mignola does despite trying, and this is a Hollywood film that needs to be realistic for their art poster so you can recognize Mila or Al Swearengen reduced in size.
