I’m about finished with the Spectacular Spider-man cartoon which leaves me sad it was so short but glad it ended while it was still… well, spectacular.

It does leave me wanting more Spider-man though. What are considered the must read runs of Spider-Man? The only Spider-Man related comics I’ve read so far are Identity Crisis, and some of the more recent Scarlet Spider comics.

Ultimate before Miles is introduced.

What issue is the cutoff point?

Also, what are the classic spidey recommendations?

Considering I’ve been here since the exodus I’ll still be here. Dunno what got your panties in a bunch.

Spider-Girl. Pretty much her entire series is worth a read. Her relationship with her mentor dad is really nice on both ends. The running gag of other heroes trying to fight May and she just tells them to quit being idiots is fun.

Some would say stop at Death of Spiderman. I would say stop at Ultimatum.

 No.1013270

DO NOT read Ultimate Spider-Man first. It's far and away from what Spider-Man is supposed to be and frankly not even that great.

I would suggest J M Stracynszki's run on Amazing Spider-Man with John Romita jr, personally.

 No.1013307

The Lee/Ditko run, the Lee/Romita Sr. run. They're the definitive ones.

Pretty much everyone just repeats the themes from them.

Then I'm partial to the Peter David run, you know, the one with When Cometh The Commuter, the first appearance of Ashcan, and The Death Of Jean DeWolf that set up the creation of Venom years later.

And the David Michelinie's run, with MJ and Peter as a young married couple struggling to make their careers work while juggling crimefighting.

I never understood why Michelinie gets so much shit around here. His run on Iron Man was the best, most consistent, he has Tony acting like an actual A-list rich guy, and never resorts to stupid gimmicks like turning Tony into a kid, or replacing him with Doom. His run on Spider-Man was just as good, this was the last great run before fucking clones, and fucking Carnage, and fucking Carnage clones, and android parents, and Aunt May dead and alive, and fucking Tony Stark ruining everything and fucking One More Day ruining everything forever, and why the fuck is Ultimate Spider-Man even a thing when Peter is alive? And before Spider-Girl and Spider-Gwen and Spider Island and Spider-Verse and Spider-get-me-the-fuck-out-of-here.

Also I'd recommend the Japanese Spider-Man manga from the 70's, it's fucking dark.

Bernie Wrightson's Hooky graphic novel was amazing, but no-one ever talks about it.

Gotcha, I appreciate the recommendations and in depth rundown. I’ll start with the oldest out of those (Lee/Ditko) and work my way through.

Anyone know of a super torrent with everything recommended? If not I’ll probably just go to one of the various places you can read stuff online.

Thanks again.

Almost finished with issue 1. I always forget how efficiently old comics set up and tell a story. You get so used to the added fluff they throw into comics today to waste pages that you aren't used to the writers and artists making every panel count.

>You get so used to the added fluff they throw into comics today

<Hahah oh wow this is almost like that time I fought an alien race alongside the avengers in a story that's compeltely unrelated to what's happeneing right now*

<*Check out Avengers: Dick Suckers issue #20 for the full story, goyim

kind of interesting how similar the cover is to Batman's first appearance

I think the worst case of that was in the NU52 Batman & Robin. That shit was almost 10/10 but then suddenly one issue ends and in the next Damian is dead and there is nothing to tell you where it happened. I had to go digging around to find that major plot point took place in another comic series that had been going on with its own plot for a while.

>I never understood why Michelinie gets so much shit around here.

Was it actual criticism or just shitposting? Hard to distinguish the two around here.

>Bernie Wrightson's Hooky graphic novel was amazing, but no-one ever talks about it.

I've read it and some issues of the Punisher POV mini he did with Jim Starlin and Bill Wray. Nobody seems to talk about anything Bernie did besides Swamp Thing
