I always thought a better way to do this sort of story would be to have a super who's ability would be taking other super's abilities away permanently through a quick contact. This way you'd have an interesting dynamic of "heroes" realizing their powers could be gone at any moment if they wen't out in public to save people as he'd hide in the crowds. Some heroes would cower away from people to keep their powers, others would lash out at regular people they thought were the power snatcher, and real heroes wouldn't give a fuck about losing their powers as that wasn't why they were saving people in the first place. Eventually he'd take the wrong persons powers and they'd go full psychotic due to not being a special snowflake any more and try to hunt him down.

I always thought the art was generally sort of British ugly also, but art doesn't stop me from enjoying a comic if I want to. I thought The Boys was a mixed bag.

I'm 21 issues in and I'm getting the feeling that it's not Superheroes he hates. His bigger rage boner is aimed at corporations, politics, and the military industrial complex. The stuff with Supers all being degenerate faggots could be interpreted as a shot at celebrities, more than cape comics specifically. There's a sort of logic to it: Imagine if all our celebrities, who are already sex-crazed, degenerate scumfucks who diddle kids, rape women, do assloads of drugs, and then have the media cover it up for them, but now they have superpowers. Now they are superhuman degenerates with all of the same media protection and none of the accountability.
That's kind of what is going on in this series. It's a "realistic" interpretation of capeshit taken to a ridiculous extreme. There's a sequence later on where they are recalling an incident where the greatest heroes in the world tried to save one of the planes that was going to crash into the Twin Towers.. Only n one of them know what they're doing. They aren't trained. They don't fully understand that ripping the doors off the plane will cause it to decompress and suck people out with it. They can fly and they are strong as fuck, but without Superman's bullshit "tactile telekinesis" bullshit helping them, they can't lift a plane in mid-flight, they can't push on it to adjust its course without ripping it to pieces. Things go south quickly and the Supers attempt to flee the scene, literally saying "fuck this." And everything only gets worse from there. It's excessive, but it makes sense in the context of the world they've set up.

Only this is BS movie logic, too. If they're standing right next to the door at that exact moment, maybe. After the initial rush of air the pressure inside and outside the plane will be equalised. Once the front window blew out at altitude and even then the pilot only made it halfway out, other crew members grabbed his legs and were able to hold on after the initial blast (he survived, too!)
Also at the height the 9/11 planes were flying the pressure wasn't much above sea level, people who went to the top floor of the WTC didn't need breathing equipment.

Also, Ennis does non-ironically like SOME superheroes. You can even see this in The Boys where the Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Legion of Superheroes stand-ins are actually kinda sympathetic (if still inept and dickish) compared to just about every other superhero.

44 chapters into The Boys, now. I'm pretty hooked. The art is hit or miss at times, but not really distracting. The story, the characters, and the plot are all surprisingly well told. Not the best shit ever put to page, but it's a competently written story. More competent than 99% of capeshit from the last two decades. That's not saying much, but it's still refreshing to read a comic where the characters slowly develop and plot threads that are set up a dozen issues back have payoffs that actually serve the story.

I don't know, I just didn't like this that much. I mean, I like Punisher MAX, and The Boys is decent, and I like the character of the Baracuda, but I don't think he works on his own. I just couldn't connect to any of the characters, and Baracuda didn't seem to do anything for most of the run.

To be fair, Ennis' American comics work has mostly been either creator owned or working on characters like The Punisher who aren't technically superheroes. I think the most superhero-y thing he's written regularly was Etrigan, and out of that Hitman. He's done a few one-offs on Batman, Spider-Man, Hulk and Thor, but otherwise he's actually pretty good at avoiding superheroes
If you want British creators who bitch about superheroes almost constantly and yet choose to write them, look no further than Warren Ellis or Alan Moore.
