It's different enough. Colbs said it well enough. You don't have random wild pokemon encounters, you still fight trainers.
You basically grind your team by looking for "large sized" pokemon and getting the pokeball on target first try, and you get more xp, which gets shared evenly with your party, vs mostly to the ones you bring out.
Also no HM slaves needed, which is good.
It feels like it's trying to hold your hand, which is fine if you remember it's meant to give newer players (ie younger people) the intro to the OLD FOLKS pokemon or something
