am alright. Checked out the new Steam Play thing, but sadly it seems parts of its functionality is hidden away inside the Steam Client, rather than being shipped with Proton itself, so couldn't change the source-code the way I wanted to.

Trust me, a lot has happened in recent years. Yes, it may be a bit slower due to calls to DirectX having to be converted to OpenGL or Vulkan, but the overhead is quite small now, and since the environment is small compared to a full-blown Windows, you might actually see a performance improvement.
