Not when punctuated like that.
If you were going to make that sentence use the word come in that way it would have to be:
I, Lazarus, come from the dead. The way you have it may have a second 'I' assumed before the comma, but the comma is used to break up what would normally be different sentences.

Even when you punctuate it like that, the comma acts as an indicator of more information is being added. If you were to break it into two sentences you would have to put a subject into the second sentence, otherwise it would make no sense at all.
Here is an example of what that would look like.
This is Mary. She comes from Detroit.
It has completely changed the way it reads, the flow and sound of the sentence.
"I am Lazarus, come from the dead" reads with much more brevity, it sounds more somber, letting you know EXACTLY who this person is and what they are about.

And just because poetry is the way people used to talk does not mean it is how people talk today, and I thoroughly believe that just about any written text should be approachable for as much of the public as possible. That means writing in ways that would sound normal if you heard someone talking like that on the street.
a8a0e8 No.2164631
>>2164629
It's not. We impart that onto the language based on how it is used. We tend to view those who use proper grammar, which includes proper sentence structure, as being posh. It does make sense in a poem, but the kind of papers I write would not work very well if much of the language was in the form of poetry and it would just be offputting to talk to someone who speaks in poetry in casual conversation.
466a16 No.2164634
See, an intrinsic part of language is a second deeper meaning that is never expressed but is still present. That deeper meaning is just as important as the surface meaning. You wouldn't want to talk in a relaxed, yet grammatically correct way in a formal or serious setting, just as you wouldn't want to talk in an overly formal or serious way in a relaxed setting. There is also clinical language, which you would only use in a clinical setting, like writing a dissertation or whatever.
I was once yelled at by an English professor for using overly formal and clinical language in an essay. Not because it was grammatically incorrect, but because it was too sterile, if that makes any sense.
d45c89 No.2164635
I think overly formal language is not good for anything other than legal documents. Dissertations tend to be super dry, but there is no reason for them to be so. You can put forth just as much information while making it more approachable for an average person. The best scientific writers are the ones who are actually fun to read
466a16 No.2164636
>>2164633
Yes, the kind of papers you write have to be clinical as it were. You're writing science papers and whatnot. It would be odd to do that because it wouldn't feel right. Just as it wouldn't feel right for any other permutation of that sentence in that poem.
I know people who speak in a very sing-songy sort of way that they tend to unintentionally rhyme, I know plenty of people who speak broken English, and I know plenty of people who, no matter what the situation, are always overly formal in their language. It have no problems understanding any of them.
a8a0e8 No.2164637
Also the whole come from thing is quite Old English. It is, technically, a proper way to say it, but dropping the come and leaving the from is just as proper in modern English. No different than the grammar rules of contractions.

'Got' is not at all the same as 'have.'
Got is the past-tense get. In it's most proper usage, if you want to use it with your example, you would say 'I have got cancer.' It is slang to drop the 'have' in that context. In this way, you are passing on the message that you have been afflicted with cancer.
Have on the other hand is a present-tense verb. I have this, I have that. When you say 'I have cancer' you are relaying that you are currently afflicted with cancer.
While they convey similar meanings, and are easy to confuse, they are not at all the same word, nor are they interchangeable.

Have and got are synonyms, they just convey different feelings.
It isn't slang to say "I got" at all. It is grammatically correct. It wouldn't be "I have got" it would be "I have gotten" and there is a difference there.
Tenses have very little to do with it. To say "I got crabs" implies that you received crabs and still have them. To say "I have crabs" is to say that presently you have them. If you wanted to say that you no longer, but did previously have crabs you would say "I had crabs."
They are not the same word, however they are synonyms and are interchangeable if you care not a lick for the feeling of the language.

>Definition of got
> past tense and past participle of get
The Got vs Gotten thing more or less comes down on UK vs American, so let's just avoid that for now. Both are proper and can be ignored right now.
The big issue here, is that 'got' is a past tense verb, while 'have' is a present tense. They can, and usually are, used together.
To say 'I got crabs' means that you did in fact get crabs. It does not at all imply that you still have them. For instance, if I told you that 'I got shot' you wouldn't assume that I am still getting shot. It doesn't preclude the possibility, but it does not imply it either.
So, to say 'I got cancer' means that you have received cancer. You very well might have got that cancer resolved, as well.
Have, on the other hand, is present tense. If 'I have crabs' then you can safely assume that I currently have crabs. I think have is pretty self explanatory and you agree with this point.
So 'I have cancer' means that I, in this present moment, have cancer.
Now you can also use them together. "I have got cancer". In this sense it combines the two, and is usually read as present tense. This is because 'got' in this sense is serving an auxiliary role to 'have,' which is the man verb in the sentence.

It is incorrect to say "have got" it should be "have gotten."
If someone told me "I got shot" I would assume you are still recovering from being shot, not that you were still getting shot. If you were getting shot then you would say you were getting shot.
I would under no circumstances assume that someone's cancer is resolved if they said they got cancer. I would only assume it was resolved if they said they had cancer.
I would also never say I have got cancer, I would say I have gotten cancer. Again, it would only be got if you dropped the have, changing it from gotten to got.

This is going to take forever to explain this to you.
1) Assuming we agree that got is the past tense of get, right? Get has a few definitions, but in this sense I assume we can agree the one we are talking about is to receive or acquire. "I get this." "You get that." Get is NOT a synonym of have.
The definition of have is possession. "I have this" "You have that."
2) Got vs Gotten is literally dependent on where you are. The UK drop gotten and simply use got. The US tends to use gotten. Both are correct. The choice of which to use is largely personal preference, similar to color vs colour.
3) Why are you assuming I am still recovering and it is fresh? It says nothing about time. If I told you "I got shot in '98," it is just as proper as saying "I got shot." You implying when "I got shot" is all on you. It could very well be old news, but just a story I never told you.
4) Alright, let's stray away from cancer. Let's instead use drunkeness, because that is something I am quite familiar with. If I said "I got drunk" would you imply that I am currently drunk? Would you imply that I am recovering from being drunk? And if so, why? If somebody asked me "Why did you piss on the bar?" And my answer was "I got drunk" would you assume the problem hadn't been resolved yet? The only difference is what we know about the specific illness. We know cancer is currently incurable, while drunkeness lasts for a few hours. The verb is still past tense in both situations.
5) Refer to above about Got vs Gotten, and drop this. Unless you want to argue that anybody saying colour or honour is wrong.

You're clearly wrong. Get appears under synonyms in all three of these.
What matters is what is standard in American English, not British English. We are Americans, we speak American English. So someone writing it colour would be incorrect by the standards and spelling of American English. It is so incorrect that American computers actually recognizes colour as being an incorrect spelling.
Why would I assume? Because human beings are naturally wired into their present lives when receiving information, so unless it is specified that the event has been over and done with, they are naturally going to assume that it is recent, even if it was in the past. Why? Because humans are psychologically hard wired to view things in the scope of a relatively small window of time automatically.
See above for why I would assume this was current or if in the past still relatively recent. Also see above for why in America it is color and honor and why saying colour and honour are incorrect by our standards.

There is no get in this one. There is get lower down, but it is a synonym to 'had' as well as not the definition we are arguing about.

This is really sloppy and poor choice of synonyms, if I do say so myself. The verb definition on have on this site is 'to posses' while the definition of get is 'to acquire'. Those aren't the same.
2) No, you might speak American English, but that doesn't mean I do. That also doesn't mean that me reverting to and fro from American to UK is improper. That is only your bias and prejudice. Grow up.
You would assume because you enjoy making an ass out of yourself. I'm staying out of it. For the sake of argument, recent and ongoing are also not the same thing, so by saying it is recent you are still agreeing with me that it is in the past. Similar concepts, I don't even pretend to deny, but not same thing. You would say that "This man got me this" while you would not say "this man had me this" would you? You have to acquire something to posses it, true enough, but the possessing goes on long after the acquiring is over.
>I speak American English, I can assume you speak American English as well since you are from the US. And, AGAIN, if I were in England I would be incorrect in using the American standards just as an English person would be incorrect for using the British standards in the US.
I could just as easily be Canadian that moved down to the US. The beauty of English, is that all the dialects are equally proper, and it doesn't matter where you live. Where you live tends to determine what set of rules you follow, but it doesn't invalidate the ones you don't.
>Still recovering or dealing with
Fucking sure! But the getting shot part of it is OVER! It is IN THE FUCKING PAST! Hence it is a past tense fucking verb!

Phase 2: Posses Sandwich
Phase 9: Eat Sandwich
Phase 4: Cease possessing Sandwich.
See how Phase 1 and 2 aren't the same? Because Phase 1 ends after you get it? Unless you are going to tell me that getting it continues all the way until it is gone, which means you are taking a moment in time and just fucking spreading that shit over minutes.

Why the fuck are all of these made up, retarded fucking words in the Oxford English Dictionary, then? Fool, you explain to me why 'otherkin' is a legit fucking word so far as the organization that is dedicated to defining our language is concerned?
We attempt to define words as they are used, not as we think they should be used. And just like you and me with this got/have thing, not everybody agrees. You can define the color blue as yellow,, and as long as the people you are talking to understand you and get the right message you are trying to send, then it is proper language.
Anyway, I am going the fuck to bed.>>2164807
