IMO with Isekai it's cheapened but it's not entirely new. In western fantasy obviously you have The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a significant classic as well as a ton of other "portal" fantasy since then. Even Lord of the Rings, while it was done more subtly had the Shire. Which for people reading in England in the 50s on some level was familiar to them even if it wasn't something that they themselves experiences, rural agrarian England was enough of the history that their grandparents or great-grandparents often would've lived it, it was something that could connect them to the fantasy world.
