Well it's certainly realistic. People identify as these sorts of things because they're moody cunts who want to constantly correct people and feel like they're some kind of oppressed minority without actually being one. If you want to tow the line and not make waves, with a transexual you can at least have a thought process like "Okay, that dude is in a dress. HR wont call me in so long as I don't call him a bloke", but a girl, dressed like a girl, looking exactly like any normal girl? That's some dangerous waters now, and you might get hit with some kind of soft-boy demigender nonsense. It's not even the transexual character who gets the most heated over identity. The race of self-victimization has continued passed that, and apparently the new face of the oppressed is a straight girl with a fancy title attached.

As for being an award winner, it's just like any other. A new mangaka is guaranteed to win an award if the work is about disability, sexuality or bullying. This is particularly poor though, it's a typical miserable cry-fest where you just wind up thinking everyone deserves the neuroses they're putting themselves through.

I can see this happening but I have a hard time accepting it since UnDead-Man -Norihiro Yagi's debut- almost made me cry with laughter, and have seen little of manga awarded debuts outside of that.
