What in the fuck did I just watch?

Something you won't see ever again.

Pretentious and psuedointellectual nonsense. I will never understand what makes some people so drawn to pretentious shit that holds little or even no meaning. I guess it just makes them feel smart when they watch something that pretends to be deep, or is poorly paced or just different for the sake of being different rather than because it has a good reason to.

It looks cool. I agree with you that the people who like this for muh hidden meanings are retarded but it's still a well-crafted film in terms of visuals.

I thought he would have some Avant-garde excuse but he was blunt.

What were the fishermen for? Why were there shadows of coelocanths? What was in the egg? Why did she turn into a woman?

A film made by a guy because he lost his faith in Christianity, but ended up not knowing what it's about.

It's his most personal film which kept him from getting work for years.

this is the true 5deep3me animu, specially if you add the american edit, it gets so fucking confusing

Really?

 No.7338

>>7337

Yeah, this film made it hard for him to get work afterwards. The critics hated it. I get it, he lost his faith and became a fedora tipper, but even he didn't know what he was doing when trying to convey that symbolism in the movie. It's more of an animated art piece than a movie because there's no actual plot or any deep meaning.

 No.7342

He did find work again, but it took him a long while.

 No.7343

I remember watching some video on jewtube that claimed that the men are supposed to be hunting shadows of a forgotten past and that the entire film is just symbolism.

>>7325

Ah so he realised it's about extremely vague symbolic bullshit that has no clear meaning and is up to the reader to find out what it means making it pointless?

So was he actually christian before that or was he a convert or something? There are not that many christians in Japan and I wouldn't be suprised if some of them saw anime as some sort of degenerate, ultra-sexual medium and would want nothing to do with it.

 No.7371

>>7370

He was probably a convert before losing his faith which led to this movie. Christians do exist as a minority in Japan. Most Japanese are Apatheists that never think of religion most of the time like Westerners do.

>Christians do exist as a minority in Japan

Yeah, I was aware of that, they range in the millions but since Japan has such a huge amount people living in it they count as only 2% of the total population.

>Most Japanese are Apatheists that never think of religion most of the time like Westerners do.

I was also aware of that, I think it's sad actually since Shintoism seems like such an interesting religion plus it's a faith native to their country and not practised by any other group of people.

I just watched it for the first time OP. I liked it. I can see why people don't like it since its easy to see it as pretentious. It had me considering whether it was a good movie or not since it has almost no narrative, and thus how necessary narrative is to something being a good movie. It certainly excelled in having a consistently eerie and bleak atmosphere. As I watched it, I wasn't really sure what to make of it, but as I have reflected on it I have grown to like it more. Overall I think the movie is about faith, though it is so pretentious you could say it was about anything really. Enjoyable despite being a totally artsy wank.

Normalfags like this film a lot for a reason. There is a shit ton of articles and youtube videos discussing its "oh so deep" meaning.

I thought it was alright.

 No.9907

I was told it is the meaning about loss in faith. But at the beginning the girl says that the egg is going to save everyone and at the end it kinda does start. Wouldn't that mean the religion is real in the world?

What the fuck was up with the crab tank though?

>>7149

I could see him genuinely saying that or the fact that he is forced to say that by PR for the company and it is about loss of faith

I read an interview (somewhere I don't remember) with Oshii. He said that the egg is empty when the guy breaks it open because he doesn't have any faith and has given up on the world. However, the girl is still given salvation because she had faith, or something like that.

Here I found it.

A gorgeous but boring film about Oshii's loss of faith.

>>7337

>>7342

It about 3 years for him to get work; he also had a falling out with Miyazaki on a Lupin project that they disagreed on. It wasn't until the Twilight Q OVA that Oshii met with Kazunori Ito and Kenji Kawaii, and later formed Head Gear to make Patalbor which saved his career.
