To be fair, the last line of his post is true for the rest of the world. Most citizens in countries not in the west have little reason to learn Japanese and even less to translate and distribute them for free, thanks to their economic difficulty on top of the innate difficulty of learning Japanese.

For example, the anime boom to the whole Asia Pacific region only happened in the late 90s, thanks to TV stations licensing and dubbing children Japanese shows to their respective countries (Doraemon, Sazae-san, Maruko-chan etc), so there were lots of money initially invested to bring those shows throughout the entire globe. The economic slowdown in the 90s helped this happening, since Japan seem to have lowered the licensing costs as they were rather desperate in raking profits right after the burst of their 80s bubble economy.

Meanwhile the west (mostly just the US) enjoyed an amicable relationship with Japan right after WWII (as a necessity against Communism™), held regular cultural exchanges and enjoyed economic booms from both the US and Japan. With all the money flowing and relationship budding from both countries, fansubbing Japanese shows became an actually doable endeavor for regular citizens who found some free time between doing good-paying jobs and R&Rs.

Small group of dedicated fans likes something. They're despised by normalfags for being different until some Chad/Stacy hits upon it and, thinking this could make him/her look quirky, takes it up on a surface level.

Normalfags start to flood in and displace the old group, making their own foundation myths around how the initial Chad found it.

It's half true, and half wrong, half true because most of the anime casuals out there started with shit like Voltron, Robotech, Sailormoon, DragonBall Z etc. etc. etc. Half wrong because plenty of anime and manag over here would have stayed obscure and not picked up by LOCALIZERS. Notice how I'm saying localizers here, because these parasites have no interest in the integrity of the show and what not. All they care about is getting money from premade content and riding on the potential coat tails of it's success.

This is why dubs for the most part will receive my eternal hatred except for some VERY FEW exceptions.
