What went right? What wrong? Did you notice any new trends?

What shows do you think anons should check out that they might have missed?

I enjoyed Happy Sugar Life and Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight the most.

Happy Sugar Life felt unique. We had shows before of damaged people doing damaged people things like Kuzu no Honkai for example, but HSL in contrast went deeper to show why exactly these people became damaged and how that damage manifests in their lives. The story overall is thrilling because you never really know what the characters are going to do next, although you can sort of predict when shit is going to go hit the fan every time there is an actual twist.

Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight has many layered meanings which might end up taking a few viewings to completely capture. SKRS spends most of its time examining relationships between the girls and why they want to become #1 (as opposed to MC who just wants to be the very best, like no one ever was).

Hanebado! was also unique in that its a drama SoL with a side of sports rather than the typical "it's a sports anime and the characters struggle to get better then go to a tournament and make friends of all our opponents along the way" tripe that is carted out every now and then harukana receive.

Island also tried to do something interesting instead of just being a harem, but unfortunately it just went off the rails and never really recovered. The time travel wasn't well explained inb4 brainlet but they did use it effectively to craft an interesting story that had good plot twists right until the end.

I hope they keep rewarding shows that try to be unique instead of shovelling another soulless isekai harem onto the discard pile.

personal AOTS:

Dropkick on my Devil; was instantly hooked by the silliness. really liked all the characters and the sometimes heartwarming moments they shared (between the bloodshed). I also found it refreshing that it sometimes deviates from the manga but in a good way. Nice mindless fun.

After the season of the honeybadger and the season of the horse, Summer 18 was the season of the snek.

enjoyed:

Happy Sugar Life; expected an edgefest like Magical Girl Site from the previous season, was pleasantly suprised despite pretty much every character being a pedophile, rapist. murderer or any combination of those.

Grand Blue Dreaming; didn't expect to find it as funny as I did. Only began watching out of boredom but the alcohol fueled insanity got me fast.

Banana Fish; heard good stuff about it and the bromance part is not nearly as gay as half-chan /a/ pretends it is.

I enjoyed Cells at Work, too but I stopped watching it halfway through because I was already too far ahead with the manga.

Also continued the second half of Lupin III Part 5, but mostly out of completionism, I find the standalone eps on average a lot better than the story arcs

Im a sucker for SoL and comedies, so AsobiAsobase has become my season's favorite.

Planet With started slow and I thought it wouldn't recover, but it turned out ok in the end. Not a masterpiece like people thought it would be, but pretty good still.

Happy Sugar Life is just alright. Everyone is a psycho, and that's too unbelievable and doesn't work well imo. You need to throw a psycho in normal situations with normal people to make it work, not have every interaction be some deranged peyote dream.

Starlight was another pleasant surprise. I was expecting a much simpler plot with low brow slice of life stuff, but it got me invested in the characters like I didn't think I would.

Hanebado was also great. Come to think of it, it made a better job at showing a damaged character that HSL did.

Harukana Receive is a good blend of sports anime and comfy sol, so it gets a pass as "healing anime" of the season

 No.54983

Unfortunately I didn't get opportunity to watch much outside of the streams, so that's more or less what I've seen.

My personal favorite was Hataraku Saibou. The animation quality was cheap, but it had a great balance of humor and action and the plots always felt both appropriately dire and silly each episode. It's one of the rare times an "edutainment" show actually felt fun. A+

for other shows:

Happy Sugar Life - an edgefest done right. I was pleasantly surprised with both the mystery/thriller aspect of it and just how fucked up and edgy all the characters are. Just don't try to make much sense of everything. A-

Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight - I don't really care too much for the plot and symbolism, but maybe the final episode will change my mind. The fights scenes are probably the best of any this season though. B+

Hanebado! - Not bad for a sports anime, and I like the two main characters, but it feels overly derivative of Ping Pong! the Animation. Looks nice. Worth a watch if you like sports anime though. B+

-Harukana Receive - Absolute garbage, poor pacing, and even the fanservice is shit. D

-Asobi Asobase - Hilarious, and a surprisingly accurate depiction of the mind of an average roastie. A

-Grand Blue - has its moment, but I really hate most of the characters, and not in a good way. The over-reliance on the "reaction faces" when there's no real joke is kinda offputting too. C

-Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro - Pretty faithful to the mango, but worse art. Just read the goddamn mango though; it's good. B

-Baki - Beefy men fighting - unfortunately, they do weird scene cuts and don't have enough actual fighting and martial arts. When they do, it's good, but the cgi can sometimes be offputting. B-

-Sunohara-sou no Kanrinin-san - was looking forward to this because i like /ss/ and ~Ara, but there's way too much crossdressing and sissyfication shit for my tastes. Some arcs are good, some garbage. C-

-Jashin-chan Dropkick - An overall fun, silly, comedy. Good, but I'll probably forget it in a season or two. B

-Angolmois - Genkou Kassenki - The godawful parchment filter ruined the show. Otherwise it would have been an okay, albeit slightly bland war show. C

-Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu - All the worst aspects of MMO Isekai. However, once you get past that, you realize that the show is 90% fanservice and the Isekai is just a dressing. C

Leftovers and continuations

Lupin 3 - I've always been a huge Lupin fan, and this season does not disappoint. Normally I hate when shows try to get with the times and incorporate modern technology, but I think this season continues to do a pretty fair job of introducing modern tech and appropriate themes without resorting to the "tech=magic" fiat or losing the essence of what makes the series great to begin with. The standalone eps in the 2nd cour were a lot better than the first too, not to mention the recurring cast all were done justice and had plenty of moments in the sun. (Ami is also a lot less insufferable than the girl in Lupin: Italia). A

BNHA - I forget where last cour ended and this cour began. Overall you got what you expected from it. OFA vs AFO was great, but the license exam arc and filler were weak by comparison. - B-

Overlord S3 - Also basically more of the same. Lots of standing around and talking with horrible pacing, some mortals get the idea to try and be clever, then Ainz and crew do some overpowered shit, mopping the floor with them without any tension whatsoever. Don't forget terrible CGI and the failure of Ainz to ever actually bone his subjects. C-

In terms of trends, I'm glad that stuff like Hataraku Saibou seems to be getting a lot of love, because it shows people still appreciate creativity and fun.

On the flipside, we have like 4 complete garbage Iseakai, and people continue to eat them up like shit.

On top of that, there's even more grbage CG shows, weird filters, and soulless sequels/remakes like FLCL alternative.

One trend that I hope continues is more musicals like we got with Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight this season and in Spring with Lost Song.

I love musicals and it's rare to find teams ambitious enough to do them, let alone with good stories.

her friend that died was the epitome of a normalfag and got burned for hanging out with damaged people but I guess she was the only normal person on the show. she did serve the intended purpose though: a final lifeline or perhaps an insert for someone to try to reach out and help mc unfuck her life, although she was too late.

>>54983

>-Angolmois - Genkou Kassenki - The godawful parchment filter ruined the show. Otherwise it would have been an okay, albeit slightly bland war show. C

I agree the filter is stupid. I do enjoy shows where they are on the brink of destruction and have to think their way out of shit though and the constant threat of the mongol horde vs mc's wits and war experience make for nice drama. it'd be more enjoyable if mc weren't an invincible gary stu incapable of making poor decisions and just lucks his way through all the betrayals they endure but the threats still somehow feel real considering its like fighting an avalanche. even with the filter I liked this more than Golden Kamuy

I have now been trying to give every show in each season a chance for two years, and I have to say that this season was probably the worst of the bunch. Nothing at all stands out to me this season. There was no Ameagari, no Houseki no Kuni, no Made in Abyss (the last 3 worthy anime of their respective seasons). I thought last season was bad because I had to choose between handing it to Megalo Box and HisoMaso, but this one really takes the cake in that it shit the bed so hard. The only good news is that next season can't possibly be worse. The choice for AotS here is really between Asobi, Bakabon, and Jashin, all 3 of which are pretty much just shallow mediocre comedies.

-Overlord III: I literally fucking hate this show.

-Bakabon: good show with excellent meta humour. Has some boring stretches but I think its self-awareness alone elevates it above most trash this season.

-Harukana Receive: I hate sports anime but this one was mostly okay. Still wouldn't have watched it if it was placed in a better season.

-Chio-chan: plebbit SHIT

-Lord of Vermilion/Happy Sugar Life: I watched both ironically to laugh at the QUALITY and the edgy shitty writing. Happy Sugar Life didn't start that way, but after everyone turned out to be a psycho in their own right it quickly devolved into pure shit.

-Grand Blue: I originally dropped this, labelling it "Chad Party", but its pretty fun. In another season it may have stayed dropped but I don't regret picking it back up.

-Hataraku Saibou: this was a lot of fun, though budget issues have hit recent episodes hard. It's very shallow and repetitive though so it'd be very cheap to put it anywhere near the AotS trophy.

-Asobi Asobase: gets a little bit wacky for my liking at times, but is probably the funniest comedy this season based on pure laughs.

-Planet With: still not sure what to make of this. At times its pretty great, but it was slow to start and I just can't get past the shitty CG and the deafening sound effects. Was the only contender for a non-comedy AotS but it just isn't there.

-Shingeki no Kyojin 3: I watched the first season of this ironically but when they put Eren in the backseat a bit more, got some money for the fight scenes, and cut out all the emo melodrama whining shit I actually found myself enjoying parts of seasons 2 and 3. I see people hating on the s3 OP but it's by far my favourite, the others are pure reddit FILTH. Still pleb bait trash though.

-Jashin-chan Dropkick: close to AotS because while it's funny, it still has heart. Jashin is best girl this season and her relationship with Medusa is also the best relationship this season. Has spent too long with the sad angel in recent episodes though.

-Sunohara-sou no Kanrinin-san: not enough gyaru.

I ended up dropping everything else, but here are my select thoughts on things I watched a good chunk of first:

-Isekai Maou etc: passed the 3 episode rule once I started taking it as pure fanservice, but eventually got bored by the usual isekai trappings.

-Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight: initially I thought this was an AotS contender but it got real repetitive real fast, with most of the content of each episode being incredibly boring. Wasn't worth sticking with for the few minutes each episode of good shit.

-High Score Girl: ugly CG and gurl gamer shit made this show unwatchable despite nice romance.

-Ongaku Shoujo: first episode or two had some subversions, but they quickly went back to the idol genre tropes which was a shame.

If you watched more than 1-3 episodes of anything else then you have shit taste.

This Lupin series really outshone Italia by leaps and bounds. The art direction for the main cast is great, reminded me of both Red and Green jackets. The lone pink jacket episode was cute, too

I found the standalone ep directors' choice of using the respective art direction for each era to be a splendid touch.

Some of the subplots felt a bit strung out to show off Enzo and Shake HanzThe entire notNepal story.

Ami is much better than the bitch from Italia, but that is comparing an apple to a turd. Also, I feel that a bit of "Mine Fujiko to iuu onna" spilled over into Italia, and gave it a bit more pretentiousness (not saying Mine Fujiko is bad, but it got really full of itself in some parts)

Adult Ami high impact sexual encounters fucking when?

This post sums it up nicely.

Nothing you'd particularly want to watch this season.

I myself just worked on my backlog and learning some neat things with not much use like cropping things out of pictures.

>I liked Italia over Mine Fujiko

I enjoyed both, but Mine Fujiko was definitely going for a different tone and theme. One much, much heavier. If the owls weren't enough of a hint, I don't know what is

Italia was plenty fun, though the MI6bugger was kind of lame overall, and the "could DaVinci still be alive???" twist was a bit silly.

>smart safe

That was the weakest one, but it also felt like a episode from Pink jacket's saga, so I gave it a pass as a homage to the series no one likes to talk about.

Excited for the finale tomorrow, I hope it leaves a decent open end

Really is a shame how fast this series blew by, but I am glad I got to enjoy it.

The last few episodes of Italia were the weakest part, definitely.

If you're counting the goemon/ jigen movies are part of Mine Fujiko, I liked both of them a lot.

I think the homages are an interesting stylistic choice too, but I wish there were more fun one-off episodes that fit in with the continuity like the Russia one.

Hopefully the finale will be good.

shio's brother being abused by their father

>everyone loves the loli like she has some sort of supernatural power to her.

satou rescued the loli after she was abandoned by her mom the same way one might rescue a puppy in a box which gave her the feeling of completeness she desired. taiyou likes the loli first for being a 2dqt on a poster and later after meeting her in the flesh for being pure (unlike the slut ara that raped him). shio's brother wants her back because she's literally his only family left and that was their plan all along, he would remain the punching bag as a distraction for their father and later reunite with his mom and sister after the dad died or fucked off. love/obsession makes people do crazy shit.

Shows I enjoyed:

>Hataraku Saibou

Fun to watch with creative attention to detail in character design.

>Sunohara

/ss/ with delicious girls.

>High Score Girl

Despite somewhat ugly CG it's a cute romance during the best era of vidya.

>Harakuna Receive

Cute girls playing volleyball. I expected fanservice and got it.

>Isekai Maou

Autists screech about muh isekai but this one was fun and had great girls.

>Happy Sugar Life

Fun as a trainwreck, but oddly well done in certain aspects.

Disappointments:

>Yama no Susume 3

Characters grossly regress to accommodate an overly dramatic story arc and there is hardly any content about mountain climbing or beautiful scenery in comparison to the past seasons.

>Planet With

2DEEP4U trash with fugly CG, didn't get past episode 4.

>Stein's Gate 0

They found a way to make this worse than the first one, great fucking job.

>Jashin Chan Dropkick

I dropped this at episode 1 because the gag already felt worn out in the first 10 minutes. I may give it another look since anons have been saying it gets much better.

>Jashin-chan Dropkick

I'm watching this one slowly (apparently it's already done airing?). It's silly fun with endearing, sometimes shitheaded characters. I read the manga first (because of the anime thread of course), and like others I appreciated the fact that the anime didn't copy it scene by scene.

That's all I watched, I was barely aware of anything else airing until I read this thread. It's a shame that it had to die so young the way it did, just as we were coming to love the characters, but it was a highlight of my days to see it translated page by page by you, and know other anons were reading it alongside me even if we didn't say much. Hinomaru Zumou it's sumo, never seen anything like it, hope it's fresh

Netflix doesn't have a bad track record, actually. They just are at permanent threat to become a gateway for western fuckery into anime.

They came up with some good stuff in the past. And I remember seeing somewhere that unlike crunchyroll, which pays japanese studios based on views, Netflix outright buys an entire series upfront. That means they offer a certain amount of money for a finished product. This way, since the producer/studio is already being paid, he theoretically has more creative freedom.

additionally notice that netflix licenses a lot of anime for exclusive distribution after airing (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_original_programs_distributed_by_Netflix#Exclusive_international_television_distribution ) as opposed to directly funding the creation of said anime (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_original_programs_distributed_by_Netflix#Anime )
