Mixing cgi with 2D works okay sometimes like karas and majestic prince but cgi only anime always look like garbage. Studios like polygon pictures are horribly incompetent. Japan should just hire some western or chinese studios to do cgi only anime…

3DCG looks like shit in stuff that you would expect deserves higher production values, like nuBerserk. It looks fine in simpler stuff. I find myself forgetting that High Score Girl is 3DCG. And of course Kemono Friends was great partially because 3DCG enabled them to make tons of unique subtle animations that injected personality into the characters that would have been too expensive or time consuming to do traditonally.

I think one problem is that, if video game cutscenes have shown, Japs can make good looking CG. It's just that all the CG talent in Japan is in games while the only CG animators in anime are people used to working with 2D and being forced to learn a completely different workflow on top being over worked and paid slave wages.

Look at the new ArcSys games like Xrd and DBFZ, they CAN make detailed models with tons of filters and smooth animations with elasticity at high framerates, but they chop it all out to imitate 2D, they even showed what the animations looked like at higher framerates in their videos showcasing the engine, and they looked great, they just artificially make them choppy because they think that choppy shit is some kind of stylistic choice instead of being a limitation. Nevermind the fact that every single time a sakuga animation is supposed to show off, the first thing it does is to ramp up the framerate.

I was mostly referring to CG you see in Fnal Fantasy. Shit games that they are, Square still knows how to make sharp looking well animated CG, and I don't why more studios try to at least mimic their fluidity.

That's the thing, they have a high budget and can swipe up actual talented CG animators in Japan. This leave the budget starved anime industry with scraps of talent. And even then you don't need a high budget to have a high framerate in CG. It costs nothing to add or reduce frames in CG.

CGI is wonderful and only getting better and better, but you need to go either full CG or not at all. It's drastically harder when they try to blend a 2D scene with some CG in the background or something. That always looks like shit unless you've got some skilled higher-budget shit going on, and who even has the money for that?

Houseki no Kuni should have banished anyone's doubts that CG can't be done properly. Clearly the potential is there for it to be done and done well. I find it funny many do not like CGI but never watched Land Of The Lustrous. Either way though usually CGI is to cut down on cost and to not overwork their employees to death. Either one or two things needs to happen.
