I want to get into Fullmetal Alchemist. I hear the 2003 anime dives into anime original stuff later on (which I hear mixed reception on), and the Brotherhood anime rushes through the beginning part. Should I just read the manga, or should I watch both animes in some weird order in order to get the best experience?

 No.48987

The original FMA is manga based until the end of episode 6 and you can continue with Brotherhood episode 4 onwards. You can also read the manga too.

Read the mango.

>Mixed reception on the 03 anime

The first anime meanders all over the place and ditches interesting ideas messily, like killing Greed off far too soon for him to actually do anything meaningful. Another odd bit is that 03 turned Gluttony into one of the main villains, when in the manga he's an actual retarded child. Couple these bits with a plot device straight out of naruto, and you're left with a show that has no idea what it wants to do with itself but has to keep a similar shape to the manga due to legalities.

Like I said, it's just plain weird.

This, really.

I forgot if they were from the original anime or the Brotherhood anime but I think some of the great episodes were those OVAs. One in particular rich doll girl had me really in tears.

I also enjoyed ALL of the movies so fuck anyone who says they sucked. They were all very entertaining for what they were. You get to see some high quality action paced battles which is neat.

How about watching both so you can have your own opinion? That would be my general recommendation for everything. I guess the old Hellsing anime would be a good example of the same thing. The 2003 anime is enjoyable and some of the early parts are better in that version. Regardless of what people say, it was worth watching back then and there is no reason for that to be different now. Ignore what everyone else says, they are all faggots, and wrong. Don't waste time on that, they are both worth watching, so just do it. Even if you think it's complete shit, then you will at least know what you dislike about it and why, and will actually have experienced it. Most people on the internet that are too eager to spread their bullshit haven't actually watched the anime that they talk about, they are just regurgitating what they heard from other people that probably haven't watched it (and that were possibly not even born/not old enough to be watch it in 2003 and have barely watched any anime at all).

In fact, Brotherhood is so close to the manga that if you already read it, the 2003 version can arguably be more interesting just because it's really different and you haven't seen it before. Having a different version of something tends to be more interesting to me nowadays than accurate adaptations. Original material has an inherent value that something that attempts to replace the manga can't have no matter how good it is. And really, if you enjoy something, you should check out every version out there since they will always at least feel somewhat different.

What does that volfag have against FMA Brotherhood?

Look around you, at all of the "thread died for this" tier garbage and not much of it is anchored, but the moment somebody makes an FMA thread, it's weighted the fuck down like the vols landwhale of a mom.

Are people really okay with that?

Read the manga if you like reading. (Brotherhood isn't 1:1 like people claim. It's just more faithful to the source material than its predecessor.)

If you want to watch the anime, just watch the first one all the way through, then Brotherhood. (This way you can form your own opinion. I'd rather not explain why the "watch part of each series" recommendations are retarded.) The series have minor differences up until Maes Hughes promotion, and differ greatly after. The first series sets up the plot and world in greater detail while Brotherhood stays more consistent and has a longer story. If you're a casual that watches dubs, both series dubs are mostly fine aside from minor religious references being altered due to Vic Mango being ultra-religous.

>differ greatly after

I should rephrase that. They follow completely different storylines from then on. There's a couple small similarities, but they're probably just coincidence. Martha revealing King Bradley's identity to Alphonse is surprisingly similar in 2003 and Brotherhood despite the different locations.
