The spinoffs have produced some high quality girls, which I can appreciate. Funnily enough the best ones all have purple hair and petite bodies. The main works were not particularly high quality to begin with, so that it was turned into some gacha garbage isn't too much of a loss. Unfortunately it has also released an immense faggotry upon the world, the one that was already posted. As for Saber Artoria, she's not even good outside of Fate/Zero where she actually has a competent writer (Urobichi). She just comes off as really self-absorbed and emo most of the time in the other series.
Astolfo isn't a girl so (s)he doesn't qualify for best girl.
Nero is great tbh, her live and let die attitude complete contrasts with Artoria's and really endeared her to me. The Kooritsukai subs for the second half of the season were acceptable quality for me but I guess everyone has their own standards.

That is just scene dialogue writing crap that occurs only in the very first episode or two. I'm talking about macro story and characterwriting. Zero was where I started with the franchise and yeah I was dubious during the first few episodes, but I had a friend to hold my hand and was very quickly into it once the immediate exposition was out of the way.
Ufotable also learned from the experience and didn't bother explaining anything in UBW or HF.

Shit, had the faggot under fire right now actually read the book, he might have opined on how curious but slow it starts out, but not nearly as severe as the exposition dump that is the first episode and a half of the maiden voyage TV series for ufotable. Might've had a bit of a back and forth about the balance of the setup and then the summons. Could even have done some comparison to what made Caster's summoning the best in the damn franchise, and even how ufotable managed at least not to fuck that up all that badly (though they did fuck up Tiny Rin's Adventure later, and I'll never forgive them for that fanfic insert bullshit).
