The premise was good, but the execution was awful. Went downhill after the titan-shifter thing and became a more convoluted mess later on.

I like the manga quite a bit, it's really interesting but it feels really weird now. The anime is ok, season 1 is fucking trash and 2 is actually pretty good. I liked the outro song too, season 3 I have no idea as I have yet to watch it and I don't want to see potato girl potentially die again, if it's even got to that point. It's not amazing but it's worth a watch at least, if you're bored. Manga is pretty fucking weird but definitely worth reading

The worldbuilding is pretty terrible :

>there's a race of people that can control/transform into titans since 2000+ years ago

>titan powers allow them to bypass the laws of physics, creating matter and energy out of nothing

<they never exploited their powers for science and scientific advancements

<they never constructed massive megastructures

>so what's some with good worldbuilding?

I can't think of any anime examples, but a good one would be something like Avatar : The Last Airbender.

Bending is a natural part of the world, and it shows. The benders utilize bending for their everyday lives :

- the Northern Water Tribe use waterbending to move their boats without sails

- the Fire Nation use firebending for heavy industies and to power steam engines

- the citizens of Omashu use earthbending to transport goods up and down their city

- the Air Nomads use airbending for airborne travel

manga spoiler:potato girl dies in chapter 104-106 (forget which)

>>41172

i really like it and keep up with the manga, but it stops being survivalist/horror oriented around chapter 76 or so and becomes a political/war manga. not the best thing ever, but worth keeping up with imo.

most anons here seem to hate it very much however, and will probably insult anyone who likes it even a little bit. which i kind of get, since it does indeed just pretend to be a survival/apocalypse/horror manga before revealing its' true form.

>>41189

people in the walls are part of a race called eldians, whose ancient ancestor ymir made a pact with either satan or god, depending on who you ask, for the power of the titans. most of the world hates them because "oy vey, muh six gorillion marleyans were murdered by those ebil eldians". basically, ancient eldia was a military superpower which allegedly genocided other peoples, however one day an eldian king decided to renounce war and flee to an island and build the walled city you know from the anime. he also used his titanpower to erase the memories of those in the city, so no one knows about this but a few select people. however, some eldians got left behind and were later conquered by a country called marley. marley put them into ghettos and made them wear armbands in a clear WW2-era ghetto aesthetic.

eventually eren and company, along with some generals including pixis overthrow the king and nobility and establish a military dictatorship, and finally go to eren's dad's basement and find out about the truth of the world from his journals, before instating christa as queen, as she was actually of royal blood from a noble and some concubine bitch.

there's more that's happened, but that's a brief summary.

 No.41217

Yeah, I don't want to watch that again.

/a/ hates it too, I think it's probably 8chan circlejerk groupthink in action because "muh popular normalfag thing, look how cool we are"

fwiw I loved season 1 for the survival/horror, thought season 2 was pretty lame, and season 3 seems to be going into the politics/war theme.

 No.41224

>>41220

I enjoyed season 1 for the action but wish they'd tone it down with the I AM SCREAMING REALLY LOUDLY CAN YOU HEAR ME sort of thing, season 2 I preferred because it felt a lot more intense. Especially in the ending of the first episode. season 3 will have action but once the guys with guns and shit are dead it'll be full on politics and a shit ton of backstory. I'm interested in how they'll animate the backstory + world war scenario though. bet you know they'll do what akame ga kill did and just change the ending

 No.41227

I don't know. There's just something off about the characters.

Their backstories are pretty compelling, but somehow the characters themselves aren't that interesting.

I suppose it has to do with them constantly carrying out missions, and having very few downtime, if at all.

They rarely do common people things (hanging out, spending their salaries, etc) which make them seem less human and more like machines.

 No.41228

>>41220

there's plenty of reasons why many anons dislike it, it's not just 'popularity'. i disagree with those reasons and like it myself, as i said, but they're not just mindlessly hating on it.

>>41224

slight tangent, but i hated akame ga kill so much in almost every way, but the setting and story. when all of the night-raid characters besides akame get killed off at the end, i thought it was pretty cool since hardly any shows do that.

I don't mind if characters scream but it should make sense in the situation, shouting to build hype is not good, having characters shout because they're in a situation that is shout worthy is good. attack on titan did have lots of these but at many points it would have been better to have normal voice sounds

people who have fun should be shot and raped, disgusting degenerates honestly

The first ten episodes of season 1 before they introduced titan shifters were great, Eren staying dead would have been a great subversive twist since he's such a typical protag, I wanted this to be a series where humanity uses ingenuity and collaboration to overcome impossible odds against the titans, but all that went to shit when Eren became Gary Stu McGuffin. Since that point it's just been politics, drama and intrigue that ranges from acceptable to retarded.

The worldbuilding was great before they introduced titan shifters.

True, but there's still room for improvement. For example they could use the heat emanated from captured Titans to heat up cold places and power steam engines.

 No.41331

>>41237

If you want fun shows with screaming, I'll watch Fist of the North Star or DBZ. The shouting in AOT isn't "fun", it's fucking annoying because they're trying to be serious and dramatic, but it comes off like a fucking farce because you're seeing performances being projected to an audience that's more suitable for a theater, not a visual medium like TV or anime. It just becomes numbing after the dozenth time you see someone YELLING AT YOU ABOUT THIS SERIOUS EVENT while the camera is close up to their face.

 No.41351

I have never watched it because it's one of those kind of shows where just looking at it gives me the feeling I won't enjoy it. Now, some people would think it's dumb to judge a show before even seeing it but I believe I have seen enough anime by now to know what I will and won't like. Also, I don't think I have ever watched a show that I thought I would hate beforehand and then suddenly got my mind changed. I had that feeling with Steins;Gate for example and postponed my watching of it for ~6 years and once I finally watched it I just got proven right about how bad it would be.

The fact that normalfags love it so much doesn't help either because I also tend to hate anything the Crunchyroll crowd eats up. Some may say that's also dumb and contrarian but normalfags have shit taste and can only swallow Jump-tier writing so it's not that weird to assume that the things they like will be shit.

 No.41590

>>41172

I find it to be flawed but entertaining, like tons of other popular anime "elites" tend to sperg out about.

AoT admittedly has a cancerous following of normalfags and casuals, but I'm not going to stop watching it just to seperate myself as a special snowflake. I watch tons of lewd/cute anime normalfags freak out about anyway.

The second season was kinda shitty but it seems to be interesting again. I noticed a lot of people dropped the manga though, so assume the story goes to shit at some point.

I've watched worse trainwrecks though, so I'll stick around I guess.

already mentioned in the thread that i like it and keep up with the manga, but that being said:

>"I'm gonna kill all the titans!"

<"No Eren, you are the titans."

>And then Eren was a titan.

 No.41631

>>41247

Basically exactly why i hate it. I still didn't think Eren was going to die, but i thought he was going to cut his way out of the titan, and end up being an amazing badass because missing limbs allowed him to move faster and more dynamically than everyone else. Adding in Titan Shifting meant the show had spent 7 episodes pretending it was something completely different, and then ripped off it's disguise to reveal it's actually just a fucking mecha show.

 No.41646

>>41233

>It's not bad, just unpolished and it drags.

Basically this.

I don't even mind the political shit and Eren, as much as the fact that they waste so many chapters on what is essentially padding. And I usually like slow burns and world building, but its just done so poorly here.

Also its kind of amusing how Eren kickstarted a whole war because even he couldn't wait any longer, since they were wasting time in universe as well apparently building railroads and whatnot, while half of the cast is on a time limit and going to start dropping like flies in a couple of years.

 No.41648

I'm still following it, but I have slowly lost track, in season 2 most people said that it was obvious that Reiner and Bertholdt were titans but I wasn't really paying attention so the epic reveal got me good, now I'm watching season 3 and fuck I have not a single clue about what's going on, I've lost track completely, I still like the show a bit but I was expecting more about the titans and their origins but we're only getting political shit.

 No.41649

>>41648

>I was expecting more about the titans and their origins but we're only getting political shit.

What has been explained goes so far back into history as to make it a bad idea to explain it. Best to keep history kind of mysterious. If they find some ancient lab and explain Titans away as nanotech or genetic engineering from our time before the collapse I'm going to be angry.

I caved and watched this entire show only recently. Here are my thoughts.

>season 1

Just awful, I watched this ironically, but it wasn't as good for this as something like Ousama Game or Mahou Shoujo Site because the budget was so low that characters spent 2/3s of each episode internal or external monologuing in annoying, self-indulgent, and emo ways. I was never enjoying it, not even before the "Eren is a titan" reveal. The second half particularly was a disappointment because the stuff in the woods was actually pretty awesome but the pacing and writing of it all was so frustrating to watch.

>season 2

Passable. The plot is still fucking stupid but there's a bit more money now so less time wasted on nothing.

>season 3 up to episode 4

Gay non-Titan stuff so far but the fucking budget is out of this world. The first five minutes of episode 2 probably cost more money than every other show this season put together.

>beyond season 3 episode 4

I haven't read the source material but I've read the wiki and holy shit what a waste. Why use this awesome premise just to make it some political drama with magic powers? Not to mention shitting on the audience by revealing that everything you've watched has been a lie because every character has had their memories wiped 100 years ago. The show would have been more honest to start at this reveal of the wider world and its history and skip the disingenuous early stuff.

I thought this was the best one since the first season. Season 2 was terrible and all the mystery stuff is the stuff I actually gave a shit about in the first season and they're going with more of that. All the political drama seems more high stakes to me than just more titans.

The show isn't the greatest but it's fine and this season was a large uptick in quality over the last season
