The site used to be one of the only decent sources for announcements of upcoming anime/manga and industry news, but all they did was translate Japanese press releases. Several years ago they got a bad reputation for hysterical opinion pieces with a feminist twist (long before SJWs and feminism was a mainstream thing) and they've been caught changing reviews to more positive ratings after getting an ad campaign for the show in question. They're basically the Polygon of anime "journalism." Whenever you see an example of "SJW salt" in regard to an airing anime, chances are it came from an ANN article or one of their writers saying something stupid on Twitter.

There's also a youtube channel that I'd recommend for now at least, you can never be too sure with youtubers or any other web-personality in general called Tokyosaurus. He's very objective, usually only reporting on the news, and very rarely giving his personal oppinion on it. And frankly, since he seems to be pretty chill, his oppinions don't really take anything away from his reporting.

I've always felt SJWeebs got into anime in a similar fashion to a bitter nostalgiafag. They saw some anime on TV and really liked the stylization and seemingly exotic premises, then looked into it further and got disappointed. For whatever reason anime seems to be that one fandom where angry fans refuse to let go, like they're trying to get back with an ex they can't get over.

A lot of them also seem to be deluded enough to think if they whine enough Japan is somehow going to listen and forsake the otaku audience for a western one. These writers, despite all their credentials, are clearly clueless about how the Japanese end of the market works, and they don't seem to know any background on otaku culture.

I think the only reason they keep hanging on is they think they're "proving" there is demand for what they want so Japan will listen, and companies like Netflix and Crunchyroll have been tossing money into the pot to make that happen. So far I can't think if any shows produced by Netflix or CR that pleased anyone, but they're certainly trying to get that western influence into the industry.

Would probably depend on a number of factors. domain name for starters, but then you have hosting costs, be it using someone else's servers, or having to buy and upgrade your own. Sure, an unpozzed site has a benefit in its own right, but if you want the site to grow, or even just remain a major site for the userbase, what should be offered to keep people coming back? A new site is likely to take a fair bit of time to have enough sway to get exclusive content (production interviews and the like), and even just trying to be "first" to report something runs the problem in that in the rush to be the first to put something out and thus get the majority of traffic for a topic, fact checking gets tossed aside until it's actually released

Also, commentation: should the site allow for it or not (I know there was some vidya site that didn't, allgamesbeta, I think, thus leaving the site only actual news), and if so, what format? I'd think anyone that likes imageboards would prefer non-accountability, where the message is more important than who said it, but if going that route for actual discussion, why would anons leave an existing imageboard like 8ch itself for that, the way you get articles and such archived and dumped on a board for internal discussion without being on the site itself. And if you plan to try to push into the niche that other anime sites cater to, more likely their userbases are going to be more preferential towards accounts and namefagging, and I'm sure a certain portion of them are just as prone to being SJWeeb-tier as the actual writers/editors are (though, that is assuming those sorts would actually jump ship if they prefer being in like company).

Content itself as well: it's probably easier to have content in relation to particular subjects if one self-hosts from their own servers, rather than rely on someone else's and how they might feel about what's going on in the server space they whore out. Beyond that, there's the added imposition of DDoS protection; if they don't agree with the site in particular, I'm pretty sure some of them can drop contract if they don't like the idea of what they're protecting. Location operating and hosted out of might also matter: don't run stuff from countries or states where it might be counter-intuitive to do so (Australia for example).
