this anime treats everything like a gimmick. it is a gimmick.
i like the artistry itself, but the characters are insufferable and certain plot elements feel like they were pulled straight from the asshole. Like
"the third pilot." Okay, but what's the criteria? Also, are the evangelions living things? How did they imbue robots with their own souls? Who made them? Everything in the series is like, "HEY IT'S THEM, or YEAH WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS," and I'm like….uhhh, okay!

Eh, some things are explained, some (most) are left to interpretation.
I personaly enjoyed when I first saw it in the 90's, but exclusively due to mecha action. I couldn't care less about the characters interpersonal conflicts.
Watching it again years later, after I developed a taste for drama and such, still didn't help either. Having damaged characters is cool and all, but when ALL of them turn out to be insuferable cunts, it's hard to keep myself interested in it.
Also I usually enjoy when shows don't beat you with blatant plot exposition, but you need to strike a ballance. Leave too many open ends and it starts to feel both lazy and pretentious

Instead I'll defend Wing, while massively flawed a lot of its sillier and inexplicable aspects were supposed to be explained in two flashback episodes that were cut and replaced with recaps for budget and time reasons. Even the infamous scene where Relena talks to Heero after he's already left has a fairly reasonable explanation. Instead it managed to get released as Episode Zero which explained the backstory of the main characters and set up the beginning of the story more solidly. It's still not an amazing anime, but if this was actually included in the series it wouldn't have the infamy of completely missing a setup or explanation for basically the entire events of the first half of the series.
As for Eva, if it doesn't explain it straightforwardly, it isn't important. It's a series heavily defined by only making things clear when they matter.

I've never agreed with this, since at no point does Shinji ever indicate he likes, let alone has any passion for mecha. There's no "oh no it's actually terrible contrary to what I thought" scene, it's hellish and awful for him to even enter it and he actively wishes to never pilot it in the first place.
