What are some concept/ideas that were really clever or interesting, but were stuck in a super shitty anime (Or aggressively mediocre)? Bonus points if the idea never got used by other, better, anime. Here's some of mine

-Shuffle!

There deredere girl that lives with the main character that makes bentos and all that shit used to be an abusive psychopath to the main character. She's deredere toward him as a form of penance

-Star Driver

Series ends with the main character purposefully unleashing the evil they've been trying to stop the entire show, so his best friend doesn't sacrifice himself to keep it sealed. He then beats the everloving fuck out of the ultimate evil.

-Akikan

Main character is shunned by the entire class because they were taken hostage by gunmen, and MC went full John Mclane on them when they put a gun to his friend's head, risking everyone's lives

-Dragon Crisis

The "average everyday highschooler" is actually a retired badass who quit participating in the supernatural shennanigans on choice years ago

-Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai!

A college kid adopts three girls and has to raise them himself, while balancing classes and a job, and living in a small college apartment.

-Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

Romance show where both leads admit they like each other by the first two episodes

>haifuri

girls und ships, but the ships are slowing being captured and the sailors are being mind controlled but then this plot gets resolved by episode 6

>joker game

spies are sent to various WW2-era countries and they have to blend into their covers in the new settings

>sora no wo to

girls stationed at a defunct military base in a country that is highly unlikely to see war gee I sure hope nothing bad happens but then nothing bad happens until the very last episode and its resolved within minutes anyways

>hibike euphonium

girls in a band trying to make it to the nationals but it ends up being about feelings and melancholy

The first series that always pops into my mind when I think "good premise, but completely shit everything else" is Sword Art Online. Think about it. We could have had a show about the adventures both humorous and depressing of a guild stuck in a death game, exploring gorgeous environments (one thing even lots of shitty MMOs tend to do right is beautiful locations), delving into the lore of the game world, some of the guild realizing they have nothing to go back to if they ever get out of the game, and shit like that. Instead, we got Cyber Jesus and two years of semen.

Xamed. That show had cool art and world but I have no idea what was going on.

Darker than Black. I had no Idea what was going on.

Shigeki no bahamut. First season was fun but the second season shows they have no idea how to further explore the world or characters.

Is something like SAO really inventive and new when stuff like Matrix and .hack already exists?

dont tell me, it goes nowhere?

Re;creators.

>Artist's creations come out of their tales to save their world/lives by having the artists change their stories. Meanwhile a mary sue was invented by fans and is hell bent on destroying everything.

I liked the premise but so many things happen only because most of the cast is completely retarded. Meteora and Megane were the only good characters. Also Blitz needs his own manga where he's the MC.

>Darker than Black. I had no Idea what was going on.

Nigger, it was a Noir world-building show. Not knowing what was happening was the fucking point.

>>26341

Episode 1: Guys says he likes girls

Episode 2: Girl admits she likes guy back

Episode 3: Guys claims he's not sure if he actually likes her, or just likes that she was nice to him

Episode 4-END: Nothing happens

>>26343

It would have easily been a great show if the had made smug-bitch the big bad, instead of making a literal meme the evil person, and also falling into the enternal trap of making the big climatic showdown some emotional nonsense about the main character's feelings instead of just having a giant beat down between all the characters.

 No.26347

I can kinda see your point with Big O being in the noir genre but the genre itself has more detective and spy stories that figure out their main plot instead of it intentionally left a mystery.

Eurobeat in Initial D and Dear Boys.

>use one of the hypest genres of music

That Machievelli Anime show is one example that needs polishing

Magical Girl Raising Project. It could have been a really good look into the way social media warps values via echo chambers and the ambiguity in personal morality but was instead a generic death game.

Ergo Proxy

>we have a great setting, atmosphere, and aesthetics

>all we have to do now is say raison d'etre a lot and namedrop philosophers to give our work depth

>fuck characters or doing anything interesting

 No.31251

>namedrop philosophers

I see this to often in anime. Was rewatching both Ghost in the Shell movies and was surprised by this. Nietzsche is a nip favorite apparently.

Also Caligula started in the same vein.

>look at how smart I am, gonna cite verbatim some passages

>name some philosophers

>ain't I smart and relatable?

 No.31254

>>31251

At least Ghost in the Shell made up for it with excellent direction and editing.

Oh yeah, it's a great movie. The pretend phylosophy takes me out a little bit when it shows up, but both movies more than make up for it.

 No.31273

Kaze no Stigma. The idea of warring clans and the son of one of leaders being exiled and coming back with strange new powers could have made for a really good story if handled better.

 No.31580

Made in Abyss is a good idea. The other world in the hole thing with the levels etc. Kinda stupid tho that a 10yo would go down into certain death. Also why isn't the military just bruteforcing the thing and take the loot?
