 No.20827

Ashita no Joe 50th anniversary project.

JD (Junk Dog) participates in fixed boxing matches in an underground ring in order to live. Today, he enters the ring again, but he encounters a certain person. JD wants to take on a challenge that risks everything.

t. ANN

 No.20829

Bit of a mixed bag based on the first episode. The soundtrack was lit, but the actual animation for the first fight, albeit not cheap, was still average, with plenty of shortcuts and workarounds. Considering it was a shitty fixed match, a springboard serving as mere introduction to the sport alongside JD's frustrations, I have hope that they'll kick it up a notch in the second episode when the real nigga shit starts.

That being said, I felt like I was transported back to the 90's while watching it. The character design, the directing, and the environments all positively reeked of the oldschool.

So far it looks like your average tournament anime. We got a talented cocky underdog (whose personality is indistinguishable from the personality of all the other protags in these shows, albeit with a bit more edge), we've got a rival who happens to be the sport's champion going "get me if u can, fag", we got the manager who's threatened by the mafia for some added conflict, and of course we've got the sport: futuristic edition. Where racing anime has hover cars, boxing anime has exosuits.

It's not bad, but seems extremely generic in every aspect.

 No.24023

>Gearless Joe

Fully expected it, but it's still stupid. Also Joe's fear of fighting gearless was entirely unrealistic. Gears don't do anything for endurance and stamina and there is absolutely no way gear increases effective punching strength so dramatically that it outright launches people off their feet (like it did here), otherwise a normal geared fight would be over in a single blow to the unprotected body/head. The difference between geared and ungeared boxing would be minimal and only centered on your offensive output, which really isn't all that gamechanging. Also the fight animation was mediocre.

Overall pretty shit episode.

 No.24025

>>24023

It makes sense that he would be scared, since going gearless means he can't block anything. Since gears also don't increase your moving speed, Megalobox seems to be a slow game with a low TTK.

Otherwise, mediocre episode. I'm starting to like Nambu a bit more though.

 No.24028

>>24025

I don't think you understand how getting hit works. If someone is hitting you with enough force to launch you off the ground and send you flying 15 feet, no quality of gear or perfect blocking technique is going to neutralize that. Let alone blows to the unprotected body/head, which would snap all bones involved in half, rupture organs, or outright kill you. Surely Joe's gotten beamed in the head/ribs a few times in his career, yes? He knows all this and thus him being deathly afraid is just completely unrealistic.

Either they went a wee bit too ham on the power of Shark's gear for dramatic tension, or more realistically, Gears just aren't that effective in increasing power output. Joe wouldn't be scared shitless in either event, since he'd already know damn well what to expect.

Also wasn't all too big a fan of the timeskip montage. Feels like they're moving a bit too quickly, but then I realized this is going to be 1 cour.

 No.24032

Man it's anime physics, I can't take punches taht send people flying several feets in the air seriously. Those happen all the time.

 No.24033

>Man it's anime physics, I can't take punches taht send people flying several feets in the air seriously. Those happen all the time.

Don't conflate supernatural anime physics with realistic ones. This is supposed to be the latter. It's whatever though as long as this sort of shit remains a one-off. If they keep having Joe getting clocked halfway to the moon with every punch, then the overall quality of this show is going straight to the shitter.

 No.24047

>>24033

>>24032

I also don't mind unrealistic punches and whatnot. For me story structure and character progression are more important.

 No.25139

Did Joe forget all of his previous training or something? Just because Aragaki's gear doesn't give him ridiculous superstrength, doesn't mean he should be blocking and facetanking all his punches. It'd be far more dramatic and narratively appropriate if he kept up his usual game, but still managed to get his shit pushed in by Aragaki (as he'd assuredly train to account for Joe's evasive dodging) until he managed a miraculous comeback.

 No.25158

Probably not. Either way, it's going to be unsatisfactory. If they resolve all the drama and tension mid-fight, then that'll break up the pacing of the fight and make it lame. If they go with pure action, the fight will be finished incredibly quickly and then the rest of the episode will be wrapup and talking. It's gonna be lame, I can feel it.

 No.25500

I lost someone recently who I should have kept in contact with so episode 5 really struck a nerve with me.

>>24025

>It makes sense that he would be scared

If this was any other anime then sure, but this joe is based on Ashita no Joe. He always loved fighting and a challenge, even when nervous it was nerves of excitement. When he dies, there is a whole point of him saying he wants to stay in the ring until the fight leaves him. If this anime really wants to base itself on ashita no joe, then It really has to stick to a character who is always up to the challege. Joe, a man who makes the impossible possible.

>>25158

this better not be an anime with a budget that just blows all it's money on the first episodes Kill la Kill. But I guess they hooked us in that way and now we're invested.

 No.26277

That entire match was about 0% hype. Not only was the match really drawn out, but the punches were weightless, the Rocky-strat™ was brought up out of nowhere, and the 50/50 weight distribution bullshit was dumb and unbelievable. To top matters off, Joe only won because Aragaki is a cripple.

lol don't get mad. It was either that or Aragaki jobbing hard. They had to come up with an excuse for joe to win gearless against some top dog. This episode's animation was also an improvement compared to the last 2.

But was Aragaki fighting gearless too? Either he was missing a battery, or that cover was the battery itself. I've guessed that he would gift his gear to Joe, and considering that Aragaki retired, that's still a posibility

Quite the episode. So Yukiko may or may not have pulled the strings to get the company for herself. I'd be pretty pissed if I were her brother. Wether or not it's true remains to be seen.

I think Joe will step in the ring anyway.

>Let me at least have this fight, we're done anyways, he'll rat us out

They fight, Joe wins.

Yukiko finds out about Joe's fake ID and her brother's plan. She intervenes and prevents Joe from having his ID found out, otherwise he'd be disqualified, opening a spot that Mikio could try to claim regardless of losing the fight.

THE ENDING TO THAT EPISODE WAS BULLSHIT

so I'm expected to believe that a guy like nanbu is able to run up infront of a fighter as good as joe, midway through charging at brotherdouche(forgot his name already), and immideately inflict a KO gut punch to joe in such a short time. This is speed that joe cannot react to or at least be shown to notice before it happens. this is literally

>teleports in front of you

>nothing personnel joe

What the fuck, with speed and strength like that why isn't Nanbu competing in megalonia?

Also that sissy punch was able to knock joe out, long enough for him to be late for the match. And we all supposed to ignore the fact that nanbu should have called a hospital by that point if joe is passed out on the ground for that long.

>>27335

Yukiko, as much of a bitch as she is, was always shown to be gung-ho with letting anyone in the ring to prove themselves. It looks like her brother is playing dirty outside of the ring to make it to the top and I'm betting that is why he didn't get the company. Interesting dynamic created but there is a question how far are they going to go for it since it seems like since we know the characters we are probably going to root for yukiko.

In the end what won her over was Joe's pure grit, and because she heard too many times the expression "the real deal"

If I had to guess, the gearless part is what will get Yuri to challenge Joe to a gearless match. Geared Yuri will beat Joe, but you could tell from their first encounter that Joe cut under his skin with his 'is that how you box' comment. Yuri seems bored at being at the top so I think he will think it's not a fair fight to fight Joe with gear when he has it. It's like beating a computer opponent in starcraft when you have power overwhelming, sure you win but there's no gusto to it.

So I think Joe will win the next fight surreptitiously, Nambu will be AFK until after the Yuri fight and then he beats Yuri in a 1v1 gearless match and is able to pay back mafia nigger.

Ok, so now pretty much all the complications have been resolved. Mob boss could come back to haunt Joe again, but at this point it would pale in comparison to Yuri's fight.

I think we're heading to an anticlimatic death

>>31348

We're on the same boat. Good effort, but it's a 7.5/10 in the end.

Don't you like rap?

Gotta get the trash audience, anon.

It's such a contrast. There are some great songs in there, but then they sprinkle some shitty rap in there as well.

ONE EPISODE LEFT STILL

Yukiko did nothing wrong.

Yuri could have fought Joe, wrecked his shit, and at a later date have a gearless rematch.

 No.32161

I am hype for the final match now. I like the decision to dedicate the penultimate episode to building up the final fight so that it doesn't feel like just another inevitable Joe win. And even assuming Joe wins, Yuri has enough backstory and has earnt enough audience respect that I'm not hoping for him to get fucked up or anything.

 No.32179

>>32161

Given the precedent set by Ashita no Joe, joe is heading to an early grave

I'm enjoying it so far, but suffering prematurely because it's gonna end already and I feel like it would have been much better as a two cour series, with less rap, and more budget dedicated to fighting scenes.

 No.32784

Though the series is one of the better ones of this season, the final showdown was shit, and the ending was shit too.

 No.32788

>>32784

Yeah, it was disappointing. Sort of a non-ending. I wouldn't say it completely ruins the show but it takes everything down a notch.

Cool fight

Shit climax

Here, have a supercut of joe getting his shit beat

 No.32794

>Cool fight

This one was probably the worst fight of the whole show and not worthy of the final battle. Choreography was boring, lopsided, looked like the reused 2-3 punches 50 times. Perhaps they did run out of money?

 No.32795

>>32794

>Choreography was boring

what? it probably had the best coreographed punches so far (maybe sans the first two fights, but I can't confirm now)

Punches themselves are well animated.

And unfortunately no fight in this series has good or well animated footwork.

Compared to a staple like Hajime no Ippo, Megalobox has seriously lacking fights. But I mantain that compare to previous fights this one had good animation and punches that felt like they had weight.

Holy moly, I love this image. I want a Megalobox Nano in the next 8chanmania.

W-What is stick out her butt?

He also didn't reveal his real name.

blueballs/10

>megalobox at 8chanmania

why didn't we think of that before?

 No.32818

People seem disappointed by this episode but it was pretty much what I expected. The characters got a nice sendoff and Joe is victorious. I don't wish they'd had a more melancholy ending at all.

I sort of agree that the fight could have been a bit better, but then again I see the fights almost as a necessary evil. The show is about boxing so you gotta have fights, but the strength of the show (apart from the obvious stylistic elements) is the character exploration and how that relates to their fighting strengths and weaknesses.

It's still my AotS. Hinamatsuri and HisoMaso are the contenders after Darling predictably threw in the towel early but Megalo Box was more consistent and got me more hype (dat soundtrack).

 No.32821

Everything about this show was awful.

How is Yukiko not sued the hell and back from the investors in the army and megalo boxing when Yuri removes the gear and fights gearless? There had to have been more people besides her putting money into a military and worldwide entertainment for her to allow yuri do what he did. That would have been market suicide

There is also no way that this match is even remotely fair since yuri is recovering from super surgery, and don't say they had advance medicine and technology of the future because all douche bro had was scalpels, tweezers, and an automatic toothbrush. When is the separation from the matches because I can imagine a month of

REVERSE AUGMENTATION

would definitely not be enough to recover unless you're wolverine or some shit. I would also like to ask what was up with not using the painkillers if we don't even know if they would have reverse side effects; yuri is just being a dipshit for no reason. Also what is up with douchebrother all of a sudden being so chill and completely giving up on his quest for revenge to shutdown yukiko at every step?

The ending was so fucking weird and disjointed, what was up with the speech about dying, what was up with the accordion music, what was up with setting up a second megaloboxing if we don't even know why yukiko is investing, what is up with hotwheels yuri and not everything paralyzed yuri, what was up with joe completely giving up on boxing? It's nice everything

After saying all of that I do like the anime and I would recommend it because it's short and it's not slice of life waifushit.

>>32784

>>32788

Yeah I agree.

>>32818

>fights almost as a necessary evil

>saying this unironically while watching a boxing anime

Having anime fights and character exploration aren't mutually exclusive. Hell, they wasted the second to last episode with more nothing instead of a whole lot of potential character exploration. This was a 13 episode anime that wasted it's budget first 3 episodes and then squeezed out some juice at the final match.

>>32821

Not true. I would say that Joe, Nanbu, and Yuri are pretty good characters that carry the show while eating up the scene anytime they are on. They aren't deep characters but what traits they are given they stick with it, and are ones that are definitely shown in the show and make. I would have given the kid a pass but then he started wrapping which was one of the lowest points of the anime.

>They aren't deep characters but what traits they are given they stick with it, and are ones that are definitely shown in the show and make.

durrrr

What traits they are given they stick with it and maintain those character personalities throughout the show making it worth following each of them to see what they do.
