What are some anime that can be considered "good" based entirely on their concept? The writing might not be very good, or it might drag on for too long, but what are some shows that are have a near enough idea that they can be entertaining based entirely off the general idea of them?

Pic related are examples of what I consider fall under this.

 No.15904

Honestly, this can be said about any bad anime. Most of them have interesting concepts, it's just that the writer(s) behind it have no fucking idea how to actually write likeable characters and a statisfying story.

My pick would be Madoka Magica.

Initial D. I wish there was a prequel where we see 70's - early 80's shitboxes being raced to older Eurobeat instead of what was the fifth season.

The point of my thread is to be a semi-suggestion thread even if the writing isn't great. Madoka is a show I thought about adding, but in the end, it's a good show because the writing is, at the least, decent. When it comes down to it, the concept is just "Deconstruction of a magical girl show" which is a hard sell unless you're into the genre. But I've had plenty of normalfag friends love the show regardless. I'm not trying to say it's a mindblowing grade- A show, but it's not fucking awful, and it's writing is at least a little above average.

A show that would make a great example in my OP would be GATE. Not good at all, and the only reason I watch it at all is BECAUSE of the concept. It's a show I enjoy thoroughly, but when someone complains about it, I think, "Well yeah, it isn't really all that great."

I guess you could say it's a thinly veiled recommendation thread.

>When it comes down to it, the concept is just "Deconstruction of a magical girl show"

Yes, that's the main issue with it, it had nothing going for it aside from the shock factor which is only really a thing if you were watching it back when it was airing since it received so much popularity later on that it was impossible to not know what it was about watching it later on.

Well then, as another pick I'll go with the most disappointing show I have ever seen to date: Shigofumi. It has a very interesting concept: people in the afterlife are allowed to send one letter to whoever they please and the MC's task is that of a Shigofumi, a person who delivers these letters. It starts out as a episodic series where the MC is a silent observer and simply wants to deliver every letter and want nothing to do with the people who recieve them, it's quite similar to Kino's Journey or Mononoke in terms of atmosphere.

It starts to go to shit somewhere in the middle when they end this episodic narrative in favour of a plotline about the MC's past as a regular schoolgirl and her insane, abusive father which ruins everything about it. I'd still recommend it but it's best to only watch the first 6 or so episodes and episode 10 which is the best one.

I'm not sure Noein counts, because it had quite a following when it came out, so maybe more than just the concept was good. It's about warriors traveling to a dimension that is essentially the same as theirs but 15 years in the past (it's almost a time-travel plot, but because it's a different dimension you can't really change your own timeline). There is drama based on relationships formed when characters were young, and from these characters facing their child selves and their friends. Plus sci-fi/mystical action

What makes me put it here is the artstile. They went for an alternative - almost sketched - style. I have to say I enjoyed it in spite of the artstile rather than for it, like some "artsy" anons praised it for at the time.

A young laddy is summoned to another world to be The Hero, fight their wars, and ensure the kingdom that summoned him comes out on top. He's given a legendary heirloom ring that enables him to use magic and give him a bit of a leg up on the competition. He's strong, but the rank and file soldiers of his nation are weak shit. To make matters worse, there's been recent rumors of calamitous spiritual unrest… Will our hero manage to save the day, calm the rage of the gods, and make it back home? Just kidding, everyone is kemonopeople, mostly cute girls, and genuine war was abolished years and years ago. Now, nations compete in mock "wars," which are more akin to hardcore triathlons, events, and other silly games. Everyone is friends with each other, nobody is seriously hurt, and even when at "war, win or lose, everyone goes home happy and all smiles.

I recently came to the realization that the setting is pretty much Gensoukyo. Tons of cute girls, hardcore 'battles' taking place with deep stakes on the line, but at the end of the day everyone is happy and all is resolved peacefully. It's pure comfy, with a nearly limitless setting that you can just dump onto endlessly. Season 4 when?

<Have a fanboy of Super Sentai wanting to actually become a "Fighter for justice" in the real world, and create a cast of characters that join him along the way.

<Ruin it by turning it into actual Super Sentai.

>Re:Creators

Yeah, that took a nose dive once the government got involved, but the problem wasn't the government itself. The problem was that you had a board room full of generals and politicians taking orders from a 14 year-old girl who's been on Earth for a month.

>A show that would make a great example in my OP would be GATE. Not good at all, and the only reason I watch it at all is BECAUSE of the concept.

I need to see about rereading that sometime, but wasn't the biggest problem that the series turned into waifu bait when it was originally "Japanese Stargate"?

Fuck you, Samurai Flamenco was a masterpiece and the last two episodes were genuinely emotional, the people who made it are living gods.

Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu

A guy loves twintails so much that when aliens invade Earth to try and steal all the twintails, he has to turn into a little girl with twintails to defeat them. You can't get a better premise than that.

An example of a show where the premise doesn't carry the show is Upotte. The first episode is great, and then it turns to utter shit by the second.

You're insane. They made it completely into something it wasn't supposed to be and made it super fucking gay to boot. It's the worst.

 No.15960

>Upotte

Another big disappointment I had to endure. The concept of girls having to learn how to fight with guns and in fact being guns themselves is pretty cool but they attempted to make some sort of weird mix of a generic moe show and a teacher-student romance, if they had just made it a surreal comedy that was self-aware about its absurdness it could have worked. I really liked the art style though which is the style studio Xebec uses in other shows as well, too bad they mainly do ecchi shows for some reason.

 No.15964

>>15947

The big problem with Re:Creators was that it turned from a series about anime characters becoming real into a circle jerk about how great the anime industry is. The writer completely lost sight of the premise of the show.

Of all the authors that should die from a Japanese cold, why couldn't it be the one who ruined Nanoha and birthed Wanko to Kurasou?

Oda Nobuna no Yabou. A guy gets flung into the Sengoku Era and becomes Toyotomi Hideyoshi while working with genderbent historical figures (my favorite being Goemon, who became a loli ninja) and doing future shit in the distant past. Not nearly as good as it sounds, but I kinda like it.

Fresh off the boat from /gaia/, huh? Only mature anime for mature viewers such as yourself, I'm sure.

GATE and Aldnoah:Zero had extremely promising concepts. GATE remained decent-to-good show while Aldnoah:Zero was a trainwreck.
