PC Engine Anonymous 07/28/19 (dom) 01:26:55 No. 946530
The PC Engine was a console made in 1987 to rival Nintendo and Sega, and it became a cult hit in Japan well regarded for it's art and music capabilities. It was later brought to the West as the Turbographix 16 and flopped pretty hard. Nobody really played it except for in Japan. It later had a CD add-on that made it even better in even more ways than the then new Super Famicom. I felt like SuFami was a downgrade from this system in many ways.
That being said, I have played most of the PCE library, so in this thread, I will be posting my thoughts about some games and point to things worth picking up. Also, talk about PC Engine and geimu things.
Before you begin, tl;dr #1 is Ys. Play Ys. It's the crowning achievement of the system and one of the best geimu experiences I've personally ever had.

I know about it because of Ys and through stuff like high score girl and GCCX , but I don't really know much more about the system beyond that.

I once mentioned it there and only got confused posts back.
Sorry for not posting about the games right now, I'm busy doing other stuff. Just posted this thread so it'll be here later.

Does this have something to do with anime, or is OP confused?
Anyway, I love me some Rondo of Blood, and New Adventure Island.

I know there are cool shmups for it, but I've never played any of them. Like one of the star soldier games.
I once tried to emulate it using MAME but I couldn't do it.

Invidious embed. Click thumbnail to play. So are we doing this? I don't mind personally. I barely play PC Engine but I do like the game Gekisha Boy. It's an auto-sidescroller where you photograph interesting things to accrue points, with each stage having a target minimum, also constrained by a limited amount of film and random projectiles that cause you to lose some and stun you temporarily if you get hit. The control scheme is interesting since moving the crosshair also makes the character move at least left and right.
Where this game really shines is in the sheer variety of silly things you can photograph, with lots of Western rip-offs such as a random De Lorean time machine, Marilyn Monroe doing the vent skirt thing, and more. Stage 2 has random panties raining from the sky and curse word grafitti. It's just a silly and neat game overall.
Aside from the mandatory Rondo of Blood, the only other game I've played on there is China Warrior from one of those random game pickers. It's garbage, and somehow ended up getting a 3DS version since there's a Virtual Console for PC Engine.

While I like to see anime adaptations take on the general style, if it's genuinely atrocious it should at least take a stab at fixing the things that don't work, and there's no excuses for bad animation.

Shooters for real Anonymous 07/30/19 (ter) 04:57:27 No. 947182
Okay, sorry it took a while.
Shooters are shooters. There's not much to say about them, but these are my favorites:
<Vertical Shooters
>Soldier Blade
>Final Solder
>Xevious
That's pretty much it. The rest of the vertical Shooters aren't really stellar. For example, Cyber Core and Dragon Spirit are pretty much the same game, except in Dragon Spirit, you're a dragon. Play them if you're a fan. They can be quite fun as well, they're worth mentioning, but they are really not as stellar as the Soldier series.
And that's fine, because PCE also has quite a lot of good
<Horizontal Shooters
These are always much more interesting. Here are the ones I recommend.
>Gradius
It's Gradius.
>Parodius
It's Gradius, but as a parody. Think of it as upgraded Gradius.
>Magical Chase
You play a cute Mahoutsukai girl and use dropped gems to buy upgrades at the shop in every level. You actually have a health bar, making it much easier than others.
>Gate of Thunder
It's just fun.
>Psychosis
It's interesting. I never got too far in it, but it just makes me wonder how much more there is to this game. Things happen that have their own internal logic. I don't know what else to say except that it's balls hard.
>Forgotten Worlds
It's like Magical Chase, but only for those of you bad enough dudes to save a post apocalyptic world with a shirtless action hero. The I button rotates you 360 degrees, making it interesting.
<Other Shooters
These are the most unique and interesting to me. They can't really be described as Vertical or Horizontal, but if I'm honest, they're more Horizontal than Vertical in nature. I like these the most.
>Fantasy Zone
The goal is to explore each map, kill enemies, and collect money to use at the shop to upgrade for the boss after you've killed all the enemy generators. It's a very difficult game.
>Chou Aniki series
Ever wanted to play a shooter, except it's actually a Gachimuchi video? The best one is Ai Chou Aniki, where you play a bodybuilder flying through space and different button combinations can make you pose in different ways to fire lasers and shit. Sugita is a big fan.
>Fantastic Night Dreams - Cotton
Easily my favorite shooter on the system. You're a little witch girl like in Magical Chase, but you have different spells, and you have a fairy as an option that you can control. There are shops as well. It has an interesting leveling mechanic where you gain EXP by defeating enemies, increasing your spell capabilities.
And that's what I can recommend. Next time I'll do a different genre, but I hope you try some of these out.

This. Keep all the bin and cue files in their own folder for each game, and play it on mednafen with the Cue file, if it's a CD game. Otherwise, just play the pce file with mednafen.

By that it means drag-drop. Mednafen's also an excellent PS1 emulator, and supposedly making great strides in Saturn emulation, I believe both have their own required firmware mind.. It's OK for the other systems it emulates as well but I'd use other options for those. Also Mednafen exists as a RetroArch core if you prefer that, but I think there's third-party launchers too for vanilla.

>Vertical shooters
>No Blazing Lazers
Really? I understand MJR pretty much ruined getting a physical copy of the game thanks to a video he did on PCE shooters but I thought it was pretty decent, especially for a launch title. Soldier Blade is awesome though, I'll check out Final Soldier as well.
>Gate of Thunder
That game's really cool, the CD soundtrack is pretty good too. I like it a little more than Lords of Thunder even if Lords has riffier tunes.

My bad dude. MJR = MetalJesusRocks, some faggot eceleb that colludes with some of his faggot reseller friends by make videos on "HIDDEN GEMS"; basically semi obscure games that could be had for a reasonable price on ebay, after making the videos his asshole friends mark up prices on auction sites. Dude's a cunt.
But yeah Blazing Lazers is a pretty decent launch shooter for the PCE, it's got a few interesting powerups, most notably a homing snake laser that travels through the screen passing through any still live enemies. There's also a way to change the difficulty, but it's cumbersome since you have to go into the Debug menu to do so. IIRC what it does is make enemies more shootier.
Here's some gameplay of it.
