Agreed. That episode got a hardy eyeroll from me. That garbage is just played out. "Teehee, you thought this adorable girl was a female but we M Night Shamalamdingdonged it! It's really a boy!" I didn't care for the character, so it's whatever, but I'm getting real fucking tired of the bait and switch shtick. It isn't interesting or surprising or add much to the story, it's seems like a lame attempt at a gotcha and it only makes me think "man, this shit again?"

Masao's episode was fun and his drama was treated in a fairly comedic way, like his huge father or him dying because of such a silly little thing. The problem was the usual suspects clinging on to the series because of that episode, and it was suddenly the best series ever to them, the staff humoring them on social media didn't help. I can ignore it because I still enjoyed the series, of course, and at least Masao isn't reminding you of his status at every opportunity.

That would work just as well if it had been a girl. It's just a comedic reaction to someone stepping on your stomach. It reminds me a bit of old western cartoons. I could see a similar gag in an old Donald Duck short, or of course some old visual gag anime.

The crossdressing faggotry was entirely unnecessary. It didn't add to his episode either. It just didn't have anything to do with anything; you could just as well have had him be a girl and get a heart attack from stress or something, and it would actually have tied into the father's obsession at the time. The crossdressing thing just didn't add anything while making the show a beacon for so-called progressives, and that the show portrays it as a perfectly fine thing suggests that the intention was to appeal to modern sensibilities, at least to some degree. All that stuff about "it doesn't matter what you gave between your legs" (paraphrasing) strengthens that idea.

It was just so unnecessary, and it was obvious that it would make loud undesirables latch onto the show.

Except that wouldn't have been ridiculous, which his actual death was meant to be, in the same way Ai's was. She could have had a more conventional storm-related death, but she didn't, she died of the quintessential unlikely event in the middle of a concert. Didn't Saki even laugh at Masao when it was all explained?

And on the more serious side of his death, there is a real difference between Masao dying of overstress, and dying because he was overstressed and then suddenly realized it was all about to come crashing down around him. It also plays into the way his father prioritized Lily's career, by drawing a distinction between the stage identity of Lily and the actual identity of his son, as well as Takao's loss on Masao's death. Even though Lily returned as a zombie, Masao is still gone, and Takao can never have his son back and undo what was done to get to that point. It wouldn't be the same without the distinction of identities, and even using being a trap as the distinction, it doesn't need to be a progressive statement. It would work well even if progressive politics didn't exist at all.

There are lots of things in any story that are "unnecessary" but still add to it. As for the progressive reaction, I don't use Twitter, so I've never had to bother with it.

If you really insist on viewing it through a political lens, then ask if it's still positive when you remember that in the process of becoming Lily, Masao died, leaving behind a grieving parent lamenting all his mistakes that led to that point.
