I like how they immediately flip to serious mode during a dangerous fight like this one. They're still loveable idiots, but they don't have to be 110% of the time, always nice to see Laius being leader-ish, despite his disturbing knowledge of Mimic genitalia.

Nope, they aren't. In LotR they live longer than men but here their lifespan is shorter. They probably always look like kids to other races unless they get really old.
Chilchak is 29 but he looks much older than Laius (who's 26) when he turns human. He could be in his forties in halfling-years. Mickbell even calls him old. The oldest halfling we saw so far was probably that slimey innkeep and even he might pass as young to a human if he wasn't such an unhealthy fuck.

I don`t think it exists a passage on the Silmarillion that mentions hobbits? I always figured them to be a subspecies of hill dwarfs that lived near rivers and slowly got smaller and softer as it confirmed by Smeagol, him being some sort of proto-hobbit that lived east of the Misty Mountains

It's not confirmed in the text, but it is suggested in numerous places, including the prologue of LotR itself. There's also the fact that their language had a clear common ancestry with Rohirric.
In Tolkien's letters he describes them as a branch of humans, and not elves or dwarves, so while Word of God is less than true canon, it's a pretty safe bet.
