This is the lazy SoL I've been waiting for. Its just going to be abusing the short demon for the whole show and maybe somehow she gets a drop of blood by accident to level up by the end. This girl understands how the precure monsters of the week feel.

Like the other anon said, Gabriel is a whole other class of character. This girl isn't as lazy, smart, confident, or attractive as Gabriel. This demon girl is written to be a semi-pathetic and relaxed character that seems to go along with anything and struggles a little at everything.

Both of them are made by J.C. Staff, but they have so many wildly different projects running at the same time that this alone is not a sufficient explanation. Are anime studios structured like some video game studios, with separate teams doing their own things? Because in that case I can imagine that this is show is done mostly by some of the same artists. Still, it doesn't have Urara's distinctive ˝childish yet dreamlike˝ backgrounds.

Poor Shamiko. Truck-kun was seconds away from freeing her from her ancestral curse, her poverty, her weakness, and her daunting task. If only the Mahou Shoujo hadn't intervened, then she'd probably be living in luxury as another world's Demon King by now.

I had no expectations for this but it was my favorite first episode of the season and Yuko is this season's best girl.

Don't want to ruin anyone's enjoyment (not that I really can), but I couldn't stand more than 5 minutes of this because just from that I already know how the entire series is going to work out.

It doesn't even have an interesting gimmick or focuses on a somewhat obscure hobby or interest, it's just "I was a normal, shy high school girl, until X".

It mostly boils down to how good the characters and their interactions are. It's not about how the series is "going to work" out; the destination's not the point. That said, the genre can be hit and miss, where the good ones are great but the not-so-good ones are just plain boring. For example, neither Anime Yell nor Comic Girls really clicked for me, meanwhile Slow Start was great.

A gimmick doesn't matter either way. Some of the best have no gimmick at all, like Yuyushiki, and there are also great ones that are radical departures from the standard like GochiUsa. The only time a gimmick actually matters is when it changes the genre from SoL into something else, the way Harukana Receive was an SoL/sports series rather than just an SoL.

But this one definitely can't be accused of not having a gimmick.

I'm the opposite. I though Slow Start was okay but Yell and Comic Girls were great. Yuyushiki was better the second time watching than the first. GochiUsa is a huge exception to this genre since its still selling unbelievably well. Machikado is still very early and seems to have taken the high impact opening episode approach. By episode 5 the true nature of this story will be clear.

This is really getting at the quality of the writer. Anyone can come up with a cast of about 5 girls but only a good writer can build their interactions and characters in an interesting way. The bad writers will use tropes, introduce new characters when out of ideas, and force typical events instead of delivering something new.

The localization in this episode was more amusing than anything. The translator changed 3 kilometers to 2 miles but because that would make the pace that mahou shoujo says unrealistic, he just added a bit of time, for example she says 9 minutes while he translates it as 10 minutes. The exchange rate he used for the costs is also accurate, it sits at around 100 yen to $1.00 nowadays.

On one hand it was amusing as he was making things harder and harder for himself, but on the other, it was very irritating that, repeatedly, the subs went off on their own, becoming completely different from what was being said and sometimes shown. It's not like you need to know the value of 500 yen to understand this episode, given that they not only make many references to it being a small amount of money, they also have the 380 yen udon and 120 yen .5L cola that you can easily infer its worth from.

Does Yuko remind you of Komachan? Somehow I can see Komachan, who might be the same size as Yuko, suddenly growing devil horns and a tail. Komachan doesn't have the "city" girl speech patterns that Yuko has though.

This was another great episode, but I'm still kind of worried that it will turn into a more generic SoL down the line based on the OP, especially now that Yuko won't be going after Momo every episode.

Pretty fun anime. It's nice to see magical girl not suffering or fighting monsters, but living a usual life. Maoukko is pure moe.

The attack name training was so bad I started apologizing for laughing at Shamiko. Its too bad the ancestor spirit cannot manifest in any form. Maybe mom and imouto will take up the good fight before long.

Usually CGDCT shows I give a hard pass on, because I want shit to fucking happen. This, though, is a pretty adorable show that actually tries to present an actual goal and situations while still maintaining as much kawaii as they can.

I have to give props to whomever Yuko's VA is, too, she has one of the most well done cute voices I've ever heard.

It's been bothering me about this show for a while, just how cheap is renting an apartment in Japan? Even taking into account how run-down the building is, it would be 100% impossible to find an apartment with its own kitchen and bathroom for that price in my area (a normal mid-sized North American city, not even an expensive major one). I was apartment-searching for four months at the beginning of this year and the cheapest I ever saw a one-bedroom apartment go for was still nearly half again their curse limit - and that building had no vacancies and a 14-person-long waiting list anyway. For their price you MIGHT be able to find a single bedroom in a shared larger house - but even that wouldn't work since there'd be nothing left for food, electricity, and other basic expenses.

And yet they somehow managed to get what seems to be a multi-bedroom unit, and still have enough left over to both run the fridge and buy food to store in it.
