Do you have any proof to back up this statement? I first heard of it about a week before the season even started, and hadn't seen anyone talk about it. Plus, only 14 posts in the entire week after it aired shows very little interest. It was a perfectly fine first episode even if there was nothing to write home about besides the robots.

I don't really have proof, no, but everyone I talked to from here and elsewhere when I asked "What are you looking forward to next season", they always said "Granbelm". We watched the PV in Anime Club. Similarly, when I asked what they thought, they said something similar to what I said, the characters and story is shit, but the SDs look good in motion.
There's not really much else to talk about. It was a very dry episode. Everyone's just kind of waiting for it to actually sell itself. If I wanted to create discussion, the only things I could post would just be me shitting on various aspects, but I don't think it's fair to do that after only one episode.

Some observations:
I really liked the consistent theme of magic and puppetry. I get the feeling that they gave it some real thought. I am a believer that mecha anime should be evaluated by the quality of their cockpits as it is an easily overlooked part of a show that only the most dedicated creators will pay attention to. This mecha shows cockpits that:
Allows for dynamic information flow in popups
Allows 360 viewing so the driver can make educated decisions
Like G gundam, has a VR room setup so that the mech can respond to the abilities of the user.
TL;DR: This show has the makings to be a good mecha show for once.

The middle schoolers are adorable. Especially main girls sister. This is going to be the kind of story where everyone has their own nightmares/reasons to fight that are all meant to be noble and tear jerking. Shingetsu hasn't said the whole story for why she is fighting yet. Most everyone else is pretty clear. The mecha battles have begun. 10 hours of battle is long for a first timer.

Maybe the problem is with me, but I don't understand why they are fighting, and how can one win. Is it like a battle royale where only one has to remain standing on the field of battle, and then she is the princeps? But then one girl just have to spend the whole game hiding and she can sabotage all the others. Also, do they have to be in the same place to end up in the same battleground? Because if the answer is yes, then maybe they can have more than one game going on at the same time. If the answer is no, then all the girls who want to participate must be in the same general region. In that case one of them could just hire some goons to keep away the rest of them, and then she will immediately win once the game starts.

It seems like a battle royale with last standing becoming the winner. When bird got defeated, her crystal thing broke and ojou threw her out. We don't know enough about the mechanics to be able to tell how viable a strategy hiding is, but evidently being the first to fight in any early match is not very good.
The battleground seems to be universal, it's the same all over the world, but if you are physically far away, you will take forever to reach the others, and likewise it's bad for the others since they can't attack you, either. They also don't necessarily know everyone's identities, although a good bunch of them know each other. Hiring goons to steal the magical amulet thing before the match from the people you know could theoretically work, but that's just one handwave away from "it can only be removed by the owner herself".

What the fuck is even the stakes of this Grail War Granbelm? Do you just lose your magic power and have to return to being a normalfag or do you die? Like Nenes mom who abandoned her? Do you gain the privilege to summond SD gundams outside of the granbelm if you win or something because I am failing to really grasp the importance and severity of this contest to begin with. Not to mention that the magic is just based on your willpower so you can just make up whatever you want feels a bit flimsy and opens up for any character to gain any power up they want just like Nene did this episode.
I like the animation and I am sticking with it since this is the only mecha show this season but I keep feeling puzzled with each episode. Who knows, maybe it will all make sense by the end.

I think it has a lot to do with the names of the main girls, shingetsu and mangetsu. I dont know the kanji but it sounds like "new moon" and "full moon" to me. The moon is a powerful symbol in folklore everywhere so their power is likely derived from that meaning. Next week we fully find out the consequences of losing. Memories wiped, lost magic forever, who knows what it could be or what happened to Nene's mom. It should be obvious already that this is going to end with main girl wishing for everyone's wishes to come true.
