I'm usually not interested in shonen anymore, but the firefighter gimmick got my attention. Worse thing is, if it's successful, it won't be a satisfying 12 episodes/2-cour series.

Manga reader here. The story actually gets really good later on. The best part of the series is the world building.

In any case, I'm happy with the adaptation so far.

Does the church themes go anywhere interesting later on, or is it going to be a generic "pseudo-christian people chant made up prayers that work for no established reasons"?

Another manga reader here. I would definitely recommend the anime if it goes the same way as the manga. The main characters and side characters get their time to shine, and If I'm betting right they end the season with the most creative way I have seen someone use "fire powers". Enen no Shouboutai has kept consistent quality up to today so I would have confidence in the anime not shitting the bed.

I'd say they've done a pretty good job making the uniforms feel distinct. The glowing blue bands of their fire coats don't feel as distinct in the manga, but they do a great job making them contrast dramatic lighting and add impact to the posing in the anime.

The bulkiness might be realistic but this is a show about people with magic powers fighting fire demons, so why not make the gear a bit unrealistic but cooler looking, like with everything else in anime? Even if you were a firefighter otaku purist though, who wanted the gear to look super realistic, I could see it working, if it weren't for that atrocious color scheme. Even just replacing the blue with red or magenta would be a massive improvement. But the black and gray would have been better traded for something more vibrant, and combining them with this ultra bright desaturated blue is not pleasant on the eyes. Player 2, indeed.

It's 2019, and the budget myth is still going strong.

Anime isn't just made by a single studio, they outsource tons of work and have limited staff. Less important episodes aren't going to be done by your A-list staff or inhouse. What you're calling budget is just scheduling and assigning your top staff to the important episodes. The anime with the highest budget per episode is almost certainly DBS. Scheduling is much more important than budget, and a small amount of key animators per episode is a very good indicator for a high quality episode.

Seven series in a single season. A sound director makes around $2000 per episode.

For simplicity sake, let's say each series has 12 episodes.

7*12*$2000 = $168000 per season. And this isn't even including specials and movies. If you want a really good job in the anime industry become a sound director.

Seems like the flames are still flames and no real edits have been made.
