"What if 2D was 3DPD? ", I don't really get the appeal. I understand that people like to watch teen dramas but idealizing all the characters by making them visually lacking in noticeable imperfections and blandness that you would see in a real life drama as towards coming of age defeats the purpose. Trying to use stylized anime as a medium undermines the core concept of imperfect people coming to terms with their imperfections and just makes a crass debasement of the ideals that anime style upholds without acheiving any of its intended goals. At best a pornographic work with no real meaning, at worst a genuine attempt at trying to convey these themes without the creators understanding anything of what they're doing.
In short, it's fake and gay.

The point is that 2D being implicitly pure and flawless is something otaku came up with, and western otaku at that, since I think it comes from the contrast between western media and anime. It's not something anyone in Japan actually believes in. Sure there are moe and iyashikei anime where the fans would be offended if they featured rampant 2DPD behavior, but anime is far too broad for that to apply to everything. 2DPD anime gets made just like any other anime. Just take it for what it is. The people in the industry don't have the same mindset the daki and figure buying western fans do.

It comes from the contrast between real people and anime. I don't think it would be possible to have such a consistent lack of PD behavior in anime if the Japanese were not aware of what PD is. I've also seen a few examples of Japanese making those types of generalizations that we tend to make, that 2D is implicitly pure. But yes, anime is just a medium, and they make not very pure stories also. I just don't think the 2D/3D barrier is an explicitly western concept.

I feel like this show could've been a movie or OVA series, mostly because I cannot bring myself to care about any of the characters except the main girl and dude. The albino girl is fine but it feels like she's just autistic for the sake of being autistic, and everything about her just makes her seem like a Mary sue in the making.
