Whilst waiting for S2 I decided to ramp up my own camping to get some of that comfort outside of my bedroom. So far it's been shit. Right now it's winter and I'm used to 30-40°C and not -2°C in a broken tent I found on the road, too few blankets and nothing underneath me. Just sleeplessly and shivering violently whilst hungover until I give up at 3am and drive back home dead tired. Got back 2 days ago, but am trying again in 3 days by myself so I can fit in proper equipment.

Anyone done similar idiocy? Anime inspired you to leave the basement and start a new hobby? How did that go?

I meant to go camping these last two weekends, but the weather was shit (rain, which equals flash floods around here) and I'm not gonna deal with shit weather. I may try again this weekend, but I have a feeling the campsites will be packed since the following weekend is fourth of July weekend.

Sounds more like a case of you being a baka than of camping not being comfy. They even address a lot of these things in the show. You should probably at least start by going in the spring or fall instead of winter.

>Anime inspired you to leave the basement and start a new hobby?

We probably aren't going to hear from any Anons who bought motorcycles after Bakuon because they're all dead now.

I wanted to try camping and I had been eyeing up camping gear for months without actually buying anything, but it's not much of a hobby where I live so all the equipment is either very expensive or cheapo garbage for camping out in your own yard, and there isn't really anything that could be called a campground anywhere near me. They tend to fall into either a very fancy, obviously managed outdoor park sort of area with gimmicky touristy attractions and little pre-built cottages with fucking TVs in them, or shady, dumpy, back of a apartament building parking lot empty lot sort of "campsite". I'm not too keen on just going innawoods randomly either since I can't own guns and bear spray is ridiculously expensive. There are some beautiful mountains not too far from where I live but they're mostly craggy and stony, probably not fit for camping. And also probably have bears.

It was the same for me, at first I wanted to be a teacher like Onizuka before remembering that all kids are cunts and that I don't want to be poor. So went second best with being a programmer like Golden Boy's Kintarou was, just without the natural talent. It was an autistic reason for picking a career, but better than an art degree.

As for the weather, it can be a huge hassle; it's expected to rain this weekend actually. But flash floods aren't a big issue here so I'll be going anyway. I can probably set up a large tarp for a roof, cuddle up in some blankets and read, play Nintendo Switch or something else. Worst-case scenario I have a fun story to tell. Hope you have a fun camping trip when you get the chance. I think there's something to gain from it, even if you have a shit time.

I have most the proper gear, but just couldn't fit anything as I went with 3 others and we all had to fit ourselves and our gear into my very very small car. So this time I'll be bringing my more luxury items (proper swag, small but quality tent, stove, plenty of blankets and food just for myself). I'm just thankful I live in Australia. The worst thing I need to worry about is spiders as there's no snakes about this time of year. I'd rather things I can squash and kill with a shovel over a giant killing machine.

Camping is best done after hiking all day on a mountain top. Makes it a lot easier to sleep at night. Winter camping is the best camping, especially if you are in a park that allows campfires. Ultra-light camping is really neat too. Knew a guy who had a pack that weighed at most 10 to 12 pounds winter weight. Introduced me to the miracle of hammocks.

The only body of water I camp near is the ocean (rarely) or uphill of small creeks. Mostly I camp at national parks though. The only people who get eaten by crocs are tourists and dumb cunts who swim in rivers and/or dams after heavy flooding. Sneaks, spiders, other people and/or dehydration are the most likely things to get you killed in this country if you're camping.

After watching NHK I wanted to clean myself up and become a bit more presentable so I got myself some barber tools and trimmed my facial hair a bit as it had grown to become too wild. Then I saw that my 7 year old cat could use some trimming as well since his beard was all over the place. Once I finished it looked pretty good to be honest. Neat and stylish as any cat should look. When I released him he looked a bit unsteady and was meowing constantly that whole evening while bumping into things.

Now for some reason he has this painful look in his face and refuses to look at my face and whenever I enter the same room he wobbles away while hugging the wall furthest away from me.

I think at this point in my life roughly everything I enjoy doing has been directly or indirectly influenced by animu. I think a lot of anons here are in the same boat.

Yuru Camp was a good show that got me thinking about camping much more than was usual, although not as much as some other anons who dropped everything and went out first thing to set the world on fire comfy camp.

But look at this: Although I wasn't initially as set on going on solo camping adventures as other anons, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that Yuru Camp probably played a leading role in my decision to drift around Souther Japan this Autum with only a tent and a backpack. Because it made me start thinking that falling asleep and awakening face-to-face to Japanese wilderness/countryside would be pretty nice. And it made me start thinking that if you're prepared, you can be comfortable with a tent and minimal supplies (provided they are the right supplies, hence the "prepared"). That in turn made me think that sleeping in a tent would not only be a great way to take in the "real" Japan but also much cheaper than paying for lodging every night, and without all the checking in and out deadlines. And that turned what was initially a plan for a brief and expensive ten day vacation into an inexpensive month-long adventure.

So yeah, I guess that's another example of "IRL" Yuru Camp - Although in my case it's more like the "homeless drifter sleeping in a bush off the side of a lonesome rural Japanese road Edition."

Other inspirations were one anon in a past Tr/a/vel thread that did some balls-to-the-wall homeless camping along the Japanese coast (he actually camped in parks in Tokyo along the way, the madman), being an alcoholic on /a/, as well as Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou.

Going back even further, the first time I ever went to Nippon was drastically motivated by an urge to visit Todai, which was a place of crucial importance in a mango that moved me greatly when I was a kid.

2D is a power that shapes our experienced reality, anons.

I'm glad you asked anon. The answers to all your questions will actually make the idea seem much more appealing.

First, let's talk about my biggest fear: Hygiene. I like being presentable, and Nips are known to be the biggest autists about this. My greatest fear is to offend them by actually being a dirty, smelly hobo. To counter this I plan on 1. Hitting up every public bath along the way. 2. Hitting up lodging (preferably a ryokan with an onsen) roughly once a week to not only bathe, but to wash my clothes. 3. I will stick to the coast and plan on swimming almost daily. The salt water may make you feel "sticky" afterwards but it is like a natural bodywash and kills bacteria, and makes your hair look cool. 4. If all else fails I will be bringing some natural soap that can be used to wash a couple of shirts and undies in a river without fearing of harming nature. I will also most likely pack a little more clothes than is advisable for a pure backpacking trip.

>How do you not get in trouble with the police or raped by smegma dick hobos?

Some careful research into this topic will reveal that Japan, is in fact one of the safest places in the world to go backpacking in. ESPECIALLY, if you are /a/non that is well versed in Nip culture and customs, have basic decency and common-sense and generally are not a filthy baka gaijin. Using terms like "Urban Camping" and "hitchhiking" in your searches (as opposed to "Backpacking") will probably yield lots of interesting advice and stories on this matter, even if you may not be planning on actually camping in an urban area.

https://hitokageproduction.com/article/17

So basically, keep your passport on you and set up shop out of the way so you intrude on people's daily lives as little as possible.

I took this concept one step futher when I discovered the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, which traditionally involves pilgrims walking around the entire island on foot (1200km+), visiting 88 temples along the way. You show up at temple number 1, purchase a white monk coat and a walking stick, and you're on your way. In modern times it is, of course, acceptable to "cheat" using public transit, getting rides, using a bicycle, etc. However, what's really interesting is that on that island, drifters walking around are recognized as traveling pilgrims by their white coat, and you are not only not looked down upon as a homeless person, but you are treated with respect as a pilgrim. Locals will go as far as to offer you food and rides, and help if shit hits the fan.

This is what I will be doing as a way to "ease" into homeless Nip camping and should assure zero trouble from... pretty much anyone. And more than that, real interactions with real human beans. I'll make a thread once it is all said and done and go into great detail about the successes and mistakes of this endeavour.

A good one person tent weighs as little as 2-3 pounds and I have a difficult time understanding how the "banana" sleeping position can ever be comfortable.

Not counting an inflatible air mattress, that weighs next to nothing nowdays, you'd still have to haul a sleeping bag and an extra tarp to protect from the elements. So you'd roughly be at the same level, weight and size-wize. You'd also be restricted by having to actually be innawoods, and I'd venture it would actually take longer to set up the whole thing. What are the benefits of this?

Their ability to chase you is basically trivia, because you're pretty much guaranteed death if one grabs you. Only person I know to have survived use a knife and his own dog to escape.

Yeah nah, by making hunting difficult even for property owners you allow predators that aren't being hunted and foreign/non-native animals breed out of control even to the point where there's so many of them actually starving, as usual over the years people started caring less about the wildlife as technology progresses and the natural state of prime ministers and leaders being out of touch since they don't really live near farmers or the outback at all.

<Was really trying to force us to move in with him but he's an abusive drunken faggot so fuck him

>Had to choose between taking out tens of thousands of dollars worth of loans, getting a full time job and only taking out thousands of dollars worth of loans, moving out and therefore severing all ties with my family, or living on the streets

>Decided to get a full time job since it seemed like the least shitty option

>Went to school 16-18 credit hours a semester (typically about 14 of which were technical credits) and worked 40-50 hours/week as a supervisor's assistant in retail

>Fast forward a year

>Believed in the "you just need the will to make it happen" meme

>Mother stole my car the day of finals since hers broke down that morning, and I flunked three classes because they wouldn't accept "my ma' stole my car while I was sleeping so she could go to school" as an excuse to "retake" the finals

She didn't even get her degree after doing that to me, fucking cunt.

>Was given option by the school to either transfer to a different degree program or fuck off

>Had already taken all my core reqs so there was nothing I could take that would transfer back to Engineering

>Figured out it would take me 8 years to get a bachelors if I "did things smart," but I didn't want to go into any more debt than I already had gone into (about $10,000 worth)

>Dropped out of college

>Went through a short depression phase

>Quit my job since I had a little money saved up and took the summer off

>Felt like I had lost everything I had going for me

>Couldn't even use money to live a normalfaggot life because couldn't both go to Uni and not be homeless

>Binged Clannad

>Had considered electrical work but for some reason it really clicked with me, was probably just the feels

>Decided to become an electrician

>Went to the local Community College

>Got conned into being an Electronics Technician instead

An electrician does everything in the wall, an electronics technician does everything outside of the wall.

>Got Electrical Technician certs, Class IV Universal HVAC certs, Solidworks certs, and would have gotten CISCO CCNA certs as well except it cost $400 and was only good for a couple years so fuck that bullshit

>In debt and can't go back to school even if I wanted to since I can't afford to and scholarships ran out

>Somehow landed a job building torpedo guidance system electronics, lightning detectors, server boards for Netflix, spectrometers, oscilloscope adapters, Naval crane boards, etc.

I'm not sure if I'd say Clannad helped me or fucked me, but at least I'm not stuck in retail or something.

The issue is that the sheriffs in the surrounding counties are dicks, and I risk trespassing on federal lands if I go into the mountains. I can only sleep on my back soldier style so it's perfect for me. If you sleep on your side or something else it might not work so well. I think it's incredibly comfy to sleep up in a hammock, the only downside is having to climb out to piss at night I guess.

Besides weight, you also have to account for the size of the hammock itself as well. Mine fits into a little ball about the size of a softball. Tents generally are longer than that packed up and take up more room. Sure, you need a sleeping mat because even on warm nights the wind underneath the thing makes you freeze. But you'd be carrying that with a tent anyway (most likely). You can just bring a light blanket I guess, but a bag would probably also go in your pack if you're using a tent.

I usually bring a tarp, but again, it's flexible and can be put nearly anywhere in your bag. You could even wrap it up with your sleeping mat if you wanted. The only other thing is a bug net. Some have the netting as part of the hammock, some don't. If it's not part of the hammock it's another small little pouch that holds the whole thing.

As for set-up, it's not hard and once you get a system down it's easy. Could someone put up a tent faster? Maybe, I guess. But the comfort of the hammock beats a tent any day at least for me. And as far as time savings, I don't really see what it would matter. You're camping and relaxing, there's no need to rush anything.

And yeah, you do need to be around something to hang it on. You could improvise and bring some contraption to hang it up on, but then you're probably not saving on weight.

If you've never tried one I'd recommend it (if it works in your geographical area). Just don't forget a sleeping mat because it really does get cold in one even on warm summer nights.

>But if you're just a carfag and driving somewhere, I don't see why someone wouldn't use use a proper tent, blankets, comfy pillow and swag.

Kinda my thoughts. If you're balls-to-the-wall camping innawoods than tents are stupid past maybe a one-person tent that folds up neatly into/attached to your hiking backpack. If you are taking a vehicle and only need to walk maybe a few miles to your campsite though, then I'd rather have the full tent setup. I've got a three person roughly 7'x7' (4.35 square meter) dome tent and it weighs maybe 6lbs (2.7kg). If I don't take the tarp it weighs even less. I wouldn't want to take it on a several mile hike, but lugging it a couple miles attached to my backpack is no big deal.

Blankets are always stupid when camping though unless you mean like a throw rug blanket. Just take a sleeping bag.

Additionally you sometimes have to go innawoods a ways in order to get the really good campgrounds with the best views. Are you fat by any chance, or were you doing lots of physical work at the time? Laying in a hole for a few hours on watch duty at night was pretty fucking bad for skinny-fag me.

Fat-fag who was my buddy at the time fell asleep and woke up with a layer of snow on him.

You always put your warming gear in your backpack before you start marching and unzip your pants to let out as much heat as possible to avoid sweating and getting cold immediately upon stopping.

Don't. They may be versatile, but unless you plan to use them regularly they are much too expensive. It would be like buying an offroad truck to drive grocery shopping once a week. Start out cheap, get a messkit that doubles as a pot or pan as well as a foldable stove. Those are more than enough to make some rice, soup, and roasted whatevers.

They do actually make things called "underquilts" for hammocks. Basically it's a sleeping bag that goes around the hammock like in this picture.

Now, obviously it's like lugging around another sleeping bag, but I would imagine that an underquilt PLUS a good mat PLUS a good bag PLUS decent clothing underneath that would keep you decently warm. I'm not from Australia and I've never been (although I would like to go one day) so I dunno if it would be good enough. And, of course, this is getting pretty bulky. However, if I had the choice, I think I'd go with that set-up vs a tent just because of how comfy a hammock is.

There's so many people here that I can't even take a piss without walking a few miles innawoods (had a tourist mother freak out when I took a piss at the bottom of a hill 200 meters away behind a tree because I was "in view of her five year old daughter" but she didn't push the issue since I was open carrying and she's from a nofuns state). Obviously the traffic was 70 in 50 zones up a mountain highway and 35 in 20 zones up a gravel mountain backwoods zone. Freedom units for those. All anons not living in bear country should try it at least once. It's actually super fun, will try make this a hobby I do frequently.

Rule of thumb with ticks - if there's deer in the area, the ticks will carry Lyme

So for what it's worth I'm almost done with this show now and I figured I might as well talk about it here. For starters it's pretty basic as far as camping information goes. I suppose it's about what I expected, I just thought it would be a little more in-depth as opposed to "when it's cold out you need a winter sleeping bag". It makes camping look pretty lame in Japan. Even when Rin goes out to pretty secluded spots she's not that far away from civilization (she almost always has a phone signal). You gotta have some gay stand thing if you want to have a fire, and they don't really do any camping activities to speak of. They seem to just show up, cook dinner (and they eat at shops on the way), then sleep and leave. No hiking or anything else. Seems really boring. They also never (I have 2 episodes left, so knock on wood here) deal with bad weather or storms or anything. It's just sunny and cold. Not even any snow on the ground...

Finally, I don't think it does a good job at making camping feel accessible for people, especially people in Japan. It seems like you would need a car to get to a remote site, so if you just have a bike or use public transport your options are very limited. If you had other friends who wanted to go I'm sure you could manage some solution, but it all seems like a big hurdle especially if you'd prefer to go solo. And I don't know what the laws are like over there, but camping without a knife on my belt would feel weird. Rin has that big blade thing but she doesn't keep it on her or even use it that much.

I wonder how many spots in Japan are reachable by car while also not having cell service. There can't be that many. The most secluded areas probably aren't even a day of backpacking away from the road.

There is a part where Rin tries to take a short-cut through a mountain pass and has no cell service. But I suspect you're right, there's probably very few areas in Japan without cell service considering the size and geography.

The alcoholic teacher/club advisor is a really weird addition to the show. Even though she seems rad as hell as far as camping buddies goes, it's actually somewhat weird to see someone who is probably a legitimate alcoholic portrayed in a show with a bunch of happy HS girls... If she just drank a beer or two to relax it would be one thing, but she really drinks to excess and it just seems off. Especially since they never really explore why she's getting fucking wasted on what amounts to a school camping trip...

And yeah, in the end, they never deal with inclement weather. Or any hardships while camping really. It's basically just a regular old "slice of life" show with a camping flavor, but there's no much depth to it other than that. Hopefully it inspired some of you anons to try camping or at least get interested in it, but I don't see it doing more than that.

In any event, I've got to say my favorite character was Aoi. Goddamn she's just too cute in the show. Her little sister was adorable too, I can imagine taking the two of them out for a real camping trip that lasts more than 8 hours.

Alcoholic teachers aren't uncommon over there. They're by definition high functioning alcoholics.

At least from personal experience, I had signal from Tokyo to Aomori with the only breaks being because the bullet train was moving too fast for my old-ass phone to maintain signal with the proxy service providing it in Japan. Once I hit Hakodate though, I had virtually no signal in Hokkaido outside of major cities (with the exception of Kitami and Utoro). Take that as you will, but I think Japan just gets really good reception. The skyscrapers interfered with my phone more than the mountains did.

Nope, I wasn't a scout; never had the opportunity. Luckily I've now learned from my mistakes. Heck, I just got back from a great solo camping trip and made sure my car was loaded with absolutely everything I'd need. Not bringing other's actually gave my tiny car the space it needed to ensure a comfy camping adventure (including 2 camping mattresses for myself).

I had a lot of fun just relaxing for 3 days and drinking hot coco whilst sketching, reading and writing. All things I never do at home.

It was only an OVA. I read the first chapter and saw some images from it, no way I'm watching that nightmare fuel.

Speak for yourself. Plenty of woods and wilderness out here in the north.

Forest near me has plenty of wolfs and boars. I am even afraid of walking in it after the wolfs decided to kindly escort me towards the border. Camping there should be good enough for you, I believe.

Hopefully it didn't sound like I disliked the show, that wasn't my intention. I did enjoy it, I just expected it to be more "camping show" with a flavor of "cute girls doing cute things" instead of the other way around. I guess there's always hope for another season, but I won't hold my breath. Particularly because of my second paragraph in that post, the show makes camping look like a much more organized and expensive hobby to break into than it might actually be. I just don't see the show inspiring many japs to get outdoors.

>>944703

There are tons of activities to do outdoors, especially while camping. I just didn't really see the show exploring any of those besides cooking. With four different girls I think they could have shown each girl pursuing a distinct interest while away from civilization. Instead they just kinda showed them taking scenic photos to send to each other and cooking traditional japanese meals on a gas burner. It felt like wasted potential to me, but if you don't agree then you're allowed to have that opinion.

>>944705

I don't think you replied to me, but I'll respond with another thought anyway. There are actually two points where Rin encounters signs warning of bears and boars out in the wilderness. What are japanese hikers/campers allowed to carry for self defense in these kinds of situations? Can they carry bear spray? Or do they carry bells and make a lot of noise? Obviously it's not touched on in the show but I wonder what exactly a typical Japanese outdoorsman can do to protect himself from hostile wildlife.

It kinda is.

As long as you're fine with looking at lakes and trees and stuff.

Of course, I'm not referring to shitty things like campsites full of boomer homes and screaming kids.
