Sit down children, its dinner time!

I recently stumbled on a new favourite manga of mine. Its called Kodoku no Gourmet and falls into the ultra niche "slice of life gourmet" sub genre. The most common example of this you probably know of is Wakako Zake. Which is nice but always lacking a thoughtfulness to it and comes off feeling a bit like an overlong 4koma at times.

Kodoku no Gourmet is a short 2 or 3 volume series by the recently deceased Tezuka award winning mangaka Jiro Taniguchi. The manga tells roughly the same story every chapter. A imports and exports businessman in this early 40's leaves work hungry. On his way to the nearest trainstation, hotel or taxi firm he stumbles on either a totally new and strange eatery or he revisits somewhere from his youth or college days and enjoys a meal.

Its a very relaxing manga, very little of the manga is spoken dialogue and is mostly the mc's internal dialogue as he comments on the area, the people and the food.

What i didn't know however is the manga is actually very popular in Japan and has a range of action figures by companies like figma or goodsmile and even has a live action television show which is best described as "Food Pornography" which currently is filming its EIGHTH season and has had multiple specials including repeat new year prime time shows in multiple prime time slots. Its apparently something of a cultural touchstone over there. It even gets regular doujins at comiket where people make thin books about the protagonist in the world of Dark Souls or Morrowind savouring their cooking. Apparently season 1 is available with english subs and is considered a 'prized relic' by its small but dedicated western fanbase who describe it as 'patrician in the extreme'.

Personally i really enjoy it. Its got all the comfort of things like Hakumei to Mikochi or Dungeon Meshi with the odd tinge of melancholy you would expect from Dead Dead Demons Dededestruction or western mumblecore like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless minds first act.

But its just a guy eating his fuckin' lunch.

>TV show example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll-by0vB7D0

I ended up buying the japanese manga volumes just to own even if i can't read them yet. Its rare i get so enamoured with such a simple premise but something about this really works for me and maybe it will for you so check it out. I'll post the first couple of chapters here.

Thats the first 4 of 18 chapters and if you like it the show is 7 seasons in and very relaxing as well with an animal crossing like soundtrack and a good performance from the lead kind of reminiscent of Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks, but in the show all the restaurants are actually real places but with actors playing the staff. Its neat.

I remember reading this quite a while ago and it still succeeds in making me hungry. I also learned there's a live tv show based around it with many seasons, so I'll probably be giving that a watch.

I just picked this up recently as well, highly recommend the TV show for anyone that enjoyed the manga. TV Goro isn't quite as awkward, which is part of the charm, but it makes up for it by showcasing real restaurants you can go and visit if you're ever in nipland I'm going to try out the tempura one from season two

>Apparently season 1 is available with english subs

More than that's been translated, seasons 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are all on Nyaa. 5 is missing for whatever reason.

I feel awkward eating alone, yet satisfied. I'll never eat at a kinda fancy or chain restaurant alone unless it's due to work, but I like knowing different eateries or new places that pop up. That's how I discover places where I really like eating, even take out food from the supermarket, that while obviously unhealthy, just hits the spot during a lazy weekend.
