Anyone still reading Dr. Stone? It's getting an anime. Will it be ruined by reddit? I fear that its hype tone will be latched on to. Also in the manga, Senku and the gang have found a hostile tribe that can make petrification bombs.

Maybe in the case of shounenshit. Seems to be a lot of love around here for Sora Yori and other genuinely good shows that also happen to be popular on reddit.

I've stopped reading around the CD business, not because I didn't like it, quite the opposite, but because I was wary a place of greatness could turn sour in a hurry. I do fully intend to read through all of it one day.
No way I'll watch the anime though. I'm glad it exists since it's proof the manga is popular, but what the hell is animation bringing to the table? Dr. Stone largely relies on hiatus/time skips to tell its story, that inherently works better in still images.

Maybe they will mention the drawbacks of fossil fuels at some point, but most likely it would only be either an aside about it being a future problem once they scale back up to a large-scale society, or an excuse to go nuclear. For now they've only reveled in what it allowed them to do.
And as for nuclear, it would be astonishingly out of character for it not to happen eventually, assuming there's an opportunity when it would fit.

I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both. If you want to enjoy a series fully, you should both read the manga and watch the anime.
For instance, Made in Abyss lost a fair bit of lore when adapted to anime, but I felt the visual and emotional impact of the anime was often better than the manga.
Of course some anime will end up being disappointing, but that's something you have to find out for yourself. You can't rely on other anons to tell you what you'll enjoy.

The fermentation process they showed was quite modern for a "stone age" setting. I'm not too sure about mixing the must daily. Wouldn't that introduce more oxygen than desired and lead to more vinegar production? Given that they had bamboo and earthenware pots they could have made an airlock with ease. The fractional distillation was nice. It was still amusing though. I'm sure MC will be as OP as ever to advance the plot, par for the course in this kind of story.

Not long. They start progressing a lot faster once there are more people around and they have a certain economy of scale for food, shelter, etc. I don't think they've seen their third winter yet, including the one this episode. Part 1 (once the prologue ends) takes half a year.

I can't stand senku I stopped reading somewhere around when they were doing that tournament arc because I just really didn't want to keep looking at him. I read that much because I liked every character except him and early on there was a lot more balance between how much time was spent on senku vs everyone else. But once you get into the thick of the tournament arc and they have to collect sulfur I just didn't want to deal with him any more.
There's something kind of disingenuous to me about having a stone-age world and making the main character a super-scientist who can make the stone-age just go away, what's the point of putting characters out of their element and then having the story not be about them learning to thrive in the new environment but rather they just make things like the world they came from, it's just not interesting and is actually frustrating because you know there isn't going to be any problem Senku can't solve because the author has access to google and can just bullshit some Gilligan's island coconut and bamboo radio-wave transmitter to call for help or something because Senku knows the exact chemical make-up of coconut milk and at what temperature you have to boil it to make it put out an SOS. It's cheap bullshit and it's not even transparent.

I don't remember the details of how they worked it, but the only reason a radio receiver needs a battery is amplification. Passive radios were commonplace before batteries became as common as they are today. The only thing unrealistic about that is the volume they're getting.

I havent read the manga but yes a radio receiver can be entirely passive aka microphone. With some clever work on passive amplification devices I suppose they could forego the amp as well.

The point of the story is taking back the modern world, not living in stone age. Senkuu is a super genius walking encyclopedia but I don't see how that makes him unlikable. It would've probably been worse if they had spread branches of science across multiple characters.
Really the only super powers Senkuu has are memory and mental math. Stuff like using brain on parallel are bullshit but people like Von Neumann or Euler were known to recite books they read years ago without mistakes.

> The point of the story is taking back the modern world,
And it's bad because it's not like it's happening in steps. Senku just decides he's going to fabricate complex tools and production processes and then it happens. He almost always has a way of getting the resources he needs, has enough time to do what he wants to do and it benefits him in exactly the way he expects it to.
> It would've probably been worse if they had spread branches of science across multiple characters.
It would have been worse if there was a varied cast of characters that had different specielties and skill-sets that they contributed to the group for each-others mutual survival and through shared hard-ship learned more about each-other as people and learned to rely on and trust each-other. Yeah that sounds like the shittiest fucking story I ever heard of. I'm glad we have Senku the wunderkind to know everything and be able to do everything, that sure solved that problem.

It would be nice if at least once Senku said "I have no idea, I didn't study that field at all before getting frozen in stone" and he has to improvise or just fist-fight his way to a solution.
Instead, he just magically comes up with the right technology to solve the problem, and it materializes within two pages and works perfectly. Every single time. Batman isn't as prepared for everything as Senku is.

Are we reading the same manga? He spent thirty chapters working towards an antibiotic that only took half a chapter to actually make, because there were so many intermediate steps he had to take in order to get everything he needed.
>if there was a varied cast of characters that had different specielties and skill-sets that they contributed to the group for each-others mutual survival
Are we reading the same manga? There IS a varied cast with different specialties, with people being chosen to be revived based on their being the best at what they do. The best eyesight, the best ship captain, the best social manipulator.
If you want a story where every day is a struggle to scrape together the necessities of life in a stone-age world, then read a survival manga instead.

A "drone" by the broadest usage is just an RC helicopter. If they have metal and woodworking putting together small stirling cycle engines with fans is not out of reach. Add in a wire controlled speed governor to pull off basic directional control and its a flying device you control remotely aka drone. I don't see a meaningful usage for such a device but the concept has been around since at least Da Vinci.

I wouldn't worry about oxygen especially early in the fermentation process (first week or three). You want a vigorous fermentation and you need 02 to do that. What I would worry about is introducing dirt (from the air ) to it and for that reason I wouldn't stir/expose it to the air more then necessary (they also didn't show what a vigorous krausen looks like either). Enjoying i so far.

So small spoiler for you: They do awaken many more people as the story goes on but it doesn't solve the problems. There's still the mystery of the petrification phenomenon and then reinventing everything modern civilization takes for granted. After the first episode, they've spent a long time formulating enough of the de-petrification solution to wake up a few people, which brings up the next few conflicts, like deciding who to revive and how to progress, because even if they could awaken every person on Earth, the planet is very different and there is no infrastructure, let alone food, to sustain them anymore.

They kind of hand-wave exactly what the binder was but even so, you'd never have the rock break like that. I might have been able to buy it if it had only been the shaft shattering along the existing splits, but not the stone head itself.

The "carbon fiber" was plant based cellulose fibers from their grass based paper. The binder they swept under the rug but they probably have access to some sort of plant rubber. Drying that out would make some kind of rubber/plastic. They even mentioned that it was an unhardened plastic that they used to make "cellophane". I assume they figured out basic vulcanization too. This is the kind of thing anons can attempt, it sounds worth a try.
The rock breaking was total BS. The paper part of the shield would need to be quite thick to not at least get penetrated by the pointy end of the rock. The rock could have broken or chipped if it already had cracks running through it but an almost explosion of the rock is not going to happen barring one of two cases. One being the rock is as shatter prone as glass and two the spear holder jabbed about as fast as you can pitch a rock at a brick wall.

To be fair to anprim GANG, there's good reasons why the older generation should be revived later, if at all:
>little to no practical survival knowledge
>less capacity for physical activity
>ingrained political/economic beliefs and associations
>short future working lives
>potential chronic illnesses they can't treat
Senku's working time is the most valuable thing they have, and he could get jumped by a lion or stung by a scorpion or whatever at any moment. He needs to be building infrastructure and easily replicable technology, not refining insulin because they happened to revive someone with the beetus. Teenagers and young adults should absolutely be the priority, and you'd have to wait at least a generation until their society is settled enough to dump a load of non-working mouths to feed on them, by which point people are already getting older.
Every successive leader would put off grasping the nettle. There's good odds it would never happen at all.

That they should have lower priority makes sense, especially the actual elderly, pensioners and such. But he didn't even use any of those sensible arguments for his stance, it's like the author wanted to make him look retarded. And likewise, Senku didn't respond sensibly, either, they just had to be black and white.
>little to no practical survival knowledge
This applies to all age groups, if anything I'd expect middle-aged men to be the most well versed in survival; as well as every other field. Around 18-35 is peak physical condition, and ~30-50 is peak capability in whatever field they are in.
>ingrained political/economic beliefs and associations
It's probably better for rebuilding society to have people with ingrained beliefs than a bunch of impressionable teenagers developing their political and economic stance based on a tribal stone age lifestyle they are quickly developing away from.

Watching films or animation is less involved than reading. All person has to do is just look and listen. To read manga, you need to read text, view images, move eyes from panel to panel, flip pages, and use a bit of imagination to interpret what you perceive. That little bit of work is enough to scare off many people after they were conditioned to watch things instead of reading them.
>>938442
Definitely, each medium can do something other one can't. Manga's greatest strength is that budget is far less relevant than it is in case of animation. However, animation has sound and movement to work with.

Every time a chapter ended with Senku doing something impactful or declaring something absurd I'd get a chill down my spine. I remember particularly the oil chapter, him saying they were going after oil was built up slowly for a few pages, started not so obvious and got more and more obvious until he declared it, the payoff I got when I slowly realized where he was going was great.
These first 2 episodes were really good so far, I felt this mix of excitement and inspiration at the end of both episodes.

Gunpowder was a big leap forward scientifically. Rather, warfare has provided the impetus for scientific advancement like nothing else. The common theme here is that basic chemistry is the key part of advancing civilization so far. If that creator faggot provided humans with a decent world tutorial we could have progressed so much further in the few million years we have been around. Instead we spent forever messing with basics like flora, fauna, textiles, agriculture, and learning basic mechanics. Hunter-gatherer-scientist should have been the starting point.

Don't get your expectation too high, it is NOT about a realistic approach to rebuilding society from scratch and showcasing actual techniques to make tools from makeshift conditions. You're the only retards here.
Leather, are you serious?
Do you realize how complex tanning is?
You need a shitload of precise tools to make even the most basic shit.
And you need a shitload of materials which he specifically doesn't have (you need at least lime and sulfur).
I've read the manga and it's not explained... well it is and it's complete bullshit, like 99% of the "explanations". Senkuu catches a deer with a trap because it can't run after it (when in reality it's the opposite. Human are pursuit predators, just follow a deer it's gonna run away every time you get close, assuming it would run away in world without humans which it wouldn't, and it's gonna collapse exhausted long before even an out of shape geek) and then wear it's pelt which he made holes in biting it (which is so retarded it hurts. Have you seen the teeth of a human? Have you seen the teeth of things that need them to pierce animal skin? Also that with stone awls being an actual thing that does exist which should tell you how well the guy that write that shit is versed in paleontology... he's at "didn't open the wiki page" level) and then he wears it...
Now protip: if you wear a dead animal (or person I don't judge) like that, it's just gonna rot.
And that's just ONE example.
Distillation is the same thing, yes some clay retorts exists but they can't make alcohol as they are and probably used something in bronze/copper to make a condensation collector (which, being valuable, is logically missing).
Etc...
It's fine if you accept it's a shonen and science is a magical super-power (like the other chars have all super-powers) but if you think that show is about science and technology or has even the tiniest spec of realism, you need to have your brain take away by social services.

Go back to reddit or wherever you heard that from. Only a few nigger tribes in Africa do that and that's not proof enough to say all humans hunted like that. When humans grew two brain cells they used traps or hunted in groups, or are you saying people outran deer to exhaustion in a forest in winter?

No.
Because humans used to be so few and deer so many they probably didn't run at all and making a spear and a spear-thrower is about as complicated as rubbing two stones together. Same thing with bow and arrows.
Of that there is plenty of evidence, hell fucking chimpanzee uses spears
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2007/02/chimps-use-spears-to-hunt-mammals-study-says/
https://archive.is/RZfjm . The genius protag is literally dumber than an actual monkey.
Pursuit/persistence hunting was definitely a thing, most hunter-gatherers that still existed in modern day practiced one form or another (on all continents, including whites in Siberia) and humans are far to well built for it for it.
Also instead of hunting deer which is relatively hard... there is plenty of other small mammals that are considerably easier to hunt. Most small mammals hide in places a human can simply dig out by hand.
Even a half brain dead human is still an apex predator.
Trap making requires much more effort and is far less successful, it requires industry and advanced knowledge/stalking of a prey habits.
Nobody uses traps to hunt for flesh consumption, it's used to hunt for fat/skin/furs because you typically make a LOT of traps (because when you make things you don't make just one, it's not worth the effort to mastering the process of making something) in a circuit and then you patrol the circuit to considerably augment the chances you will catch something. The cost is that by the time you get to the caught prey it's guts are gonna starts decomposing, the blood clotting, etc... and seeping in the meat.
Again it's stereotypical of a shonen. Cool initial pitch turns into a very shallow setting with a writer that has very little knowledge of what the subject actually is (because he just thought it was a cool idea and ran with it... for 30 chapters and then it turns into a tournament arc).
You're allowed to like junk.
You're not allowed to pretend that thing is anything else.

The science is pretty good, for the most part, but a lot of important stuff is just glossed over or not even explained. If I had to hazard a guess, it's because the writer is prioritizing the story and plot progression over painstakingly detailing every invention and acquisition.
I still enjoy the series overall, but there's some awkward hiccups where the series can't decide if it wants to be a supernatural mystery, a hard science survivalist story, a civ builder about the glorious return of modern science, or a shounen action series where the protag is weak, but super smart.

Christ fuck, you're pretty dumb yourself for someone trying to decide whether the protag is smart or not.
I don't think this was ever a survival manga, yes there are some aspects of it, it's inevitable in this setting, but most of it happens right at the start when there's only Senkuu and Taijuu living together. They gloss overt his part because this is obvious not the focus, the focus is Senkuu building stuff, they even advertise the manga as a "crafting adventure", probably to appeal to kids who like minecraft.
"Science" is his super power and a lot of the shit he does is explained poorly, but I don't think the core of it is bad at all.
Like the roadmap to antibiotics, they show all the main components they need to make antibiotics, and he goes out getting one by one, making the components needed to reach the final goal, it's not perfect but during this process I didn't notice anything glaringly wrong, I think it's all presented really well.
If you're frustrated because this manga makes some effort to be accurate but doesn't go the extra mile to be 100% accurate and realistic then I don't know what to tell you, it was never going to be this kind of manga from the start, it never sold itself as that or anything, it's like you went to a burger place and threw a shit fit because they don't serve pizza.

Using it as a cheap symbol for "this character is smart" isn't as bad as mangling it for a plot point.
Think of it as his motivation or something, wanting to get back to a level of development where that regime of physics is relevant to technology again.

It's universally recognizable and looks cool to the layman.
While E=mc^2 is pretty overused and lame overall Boichi himself was a physics major so it's not like they're throwing this out without knowing shit. I'm actually surprised nobody mentioned this so far.
Seibuta is completely different, it was like a middle school graduate watched some shitty dumbed down youtube videos and put misunderstood quantum shit in his LN to seem smarter. That Schrodinger shit was the most annoying misunderstanding of QM people do and I had to drop it.
So far in Dr. Stone biology is the most unscientific part, but it doesn't really hinder the story much.

That's my fucking point.
It's fine to watch this as shonen (aka the junk food of anime) where science is in fact magic.
Science is definitely not the goal here nor realism, so saying it is (which is most of the thread) ticks me off.
>but during this process I didn't notice anything glaringly wrong
You mean when they ran out of coal?
Because they haven't been making charcoal?
Because they made everything by burning wood so far (and a jar of coal so small you would hardly use it for anything else than a barbecue)?
After going in a place where sulfuric acid occurs naturally in insanely great concentration (which is about as common on the planet as diamond mines. Maybe less)?
When they have lead, sulfur, cinnabar, etc...?
Meaning they can perfectly make some using a old timey lead chamber. The problem is that shit isn't taught in chem 101 as it's 1700's alchemy tech (despite the fact a well stock lab will have the tech, for when you need a small bath of acid and you've ran out of industrial grade). So the author solution to find acid in a "good enough" concentration is by having it naturally occur (which isn't impossible... just extremely improbable).
The author does have knowledge of material properties and isn't making "big" mistakes but the production methods (which is the "cool background idea" past the shonen shenanigans) are at best very truncated... at worst complete BS.
Again I'm saying it's fine it's a shonen, it's Naruto or Bleach.
You should expect as much a show about science, technology and survival that those are shows about medieval covert activity in feudal japan and the mystical ferrying the souls of the deceased.

>abysmal state of human settlements that had modern knowledge and several thousand years to develop
The knowledge would fade within a couple generations. Unlike Senku, they didn't have the luxury of an established village that could support their efforts to blitz through everything, so they were focused on survival. They also had no idea how to revive people, if it was even possible, while Senku had the advantage of it being narrowed down. Besides, Senku's making what he needs, not rebuilding systematically. If he dies, everyone's back to square one.
And there's nothing unrealistic about villages being at that level for millennia.
>"While the enemy is preparing for war against us, let's make a radio!"
Correct, that is what they did. Communication over long distances is useful.
>radio made of a single transistor
It would be a complete waste of pages to go into detail of every single circuit element. This is an anime, not an instruction manual. The fact that they can make the components is the important part.
>modern people didn't introduce cooking and agriculture within a whole year of being awakened
The first year there was only two of them, one of whom was useless at physical labor like working fields.
And in the village that was already managing, they had more pressing concerns.
The fridge and the "carbon fiber" were stupid though.

In theory its possible, but in practice its not. Some of it is manageable but some of it is impossible to achieve. They show some failures but in reality they would have failed a lot more with most of the stuff. Just consider 1/1000 odds as 1/2.
For example making distillery is fucking hard if you rely on luck to do it. It broke once in show, but in reality they would spend days constantly fixing everything and result would be really shitty. Their makeshift constructions are always reliable and they never required maintenance. In reality they would smash half of their stuff out of pure frustration over how shitty everything is.
So technically possible but its as probable as naked man killing a lion. But I dont think they had anything outright impossible. except starting a colony with less than 10 people for it to survive thousands of years. While its technically possible to avoid inbreeding defects with pure luck, we are talking about impossible odds. You will probably have better luck interbreeding with monkeys.

But really, stop trying to give shit to author for stupidity. Most of it is just "fascinating idea+pure bullshit" exact same premise as most of scifi short stories written not by scientists. it gives people some idea how stuff works, so its okay even if its exaggerated. It wasnt written be genius or even by a handy man who can actually do all of it.
