It seems completely contradictory to prohibit having a part-time job when high schools, as I understand their system, charge tuition, or to restrict students' transportation when the school doesn't offer an official alternative like they do in North America.

Japan has an extensive network of public transportation available for use, so the lack of school busses isn't a problem for them. As for part-time jobs, at least in the 2D world poor students typically get exceptions to the ban.

I found the story to be much more relatable after she began to gain friends. The point isn't that she grew out of her autism shell, but that she found other weird people like her. We don't see her lounging in her room all day, is the difference from the earlier chapters to now.

The thing is, she's still weird, and in a way she reminds me of when I was shy but little by you kinda get a grasp of how to act. Like the guys who tell you "Just be yourself" aren't right, but aren't wrong, but as someone who was autism levels of social awkwardness to someone who can manage to talk and socialize a bit I can tell you it's strangely like Kuroki's adventures, although for me I had to crash and burn several times in several social interactions but little by little I began to get a grasp on that shit, and I have to say that just makes Tomoko's manga all the more fun to read. It IS her still being a social fuckup from time to time, but at least we see her actively being put on social events rather than her completely avoiding it and even slowly easing into them.
That and the girls are a strange blend of 2D and 3D behavior that remind me of Aqua from Konosuba, so they are refreshingly baka.

The Otaku crowd really hated Watamote when it first came out, whereas it was mostly outcasts and Westerners who really liked the show/series and by extension Tomoko for reminding them of their fringe hobbies and for portraying realistically people who're narcissistic and full of themselves when in reality they're the biggest losers around. The author and artist really pandered to the West with the manga and this was something unforgivable to most of the pixiv crowd, as you just mentioned there's really very little art of her or other characters on Japanese websites compared to Western ones, even just comparing fetish art or doujins the Japanese didn't really use her that much.
The School Arc Trip by itself wasn't so bad actually, because it tried to do something new, pretty well at it, too, by showing you the kind of interactions that Tomoko could be able to have with drastically different personalities when put in a position of authority. Problem is that this thing should have gone on just for a few chapters. Instead the duo found out that the Japanese audience really just wanted them to draw more cute girls, so they turned it into a very boring but tried and tested yuri harem manga with the one quirk to it that the main character is rude to everyone, which to be honest destroys all the immersion and anything remotely interesting about Tomoko - no gaming references, no otaku or anime references past some very cheap shots, not even jokes about her family reacting to her actions. Tomoko dealing with her family got completely removed, with her brother being every once in a while shown as a two-dimensional character that just doesn't like her sister and does mundane stuff while being surrounded by creeps. In fact, most of the characters went really two-dimensional.
It's probably just me, but I've noticed that outside of niches places such as this board, Westerners really stopped following Watamote and most of the art that is still around is just of Tomoko and occasionally characters from the Anime.

Actually, forget about westerners. When is there ever a strong following after the anime is done and the manga keeps going? I'd say it's pretty surprising that it gained such a strong "second wind".

That's what I meant. It's not surprising that it had a big following when it aired and that most artists base their stuff on the anime, so less art from westerners about post-animu stuff isn't uncommon.
Even regarding japanese artists, I think there was barely any art before the anime aired, which then got a huge amount of art and doujin.
That's why I think the "nips hated early watamote"-theory is bullshit.

If I had to guess, it probably had a little bit of popularity when it started just because it was so unique (at least to my knowledge), and the anime was made to capitalize on that. Once the anime aired that would obviously bring another boost to the popularity, but the novelty wore off and it didn't have cute girls to keep otaku interested so the manga fell off the map until they twisted it into a yuri harem thing.

Yeah, because that's pretty much how the manga is going to end, right? It is either going to be something like that or the joke about this character development really being an elaborate, cruel prank to take everything away from Tomoko at graduation is real and we will just have to slowly clap at the authors' choice.
>>930177
>Was there ever a strong western following before and after the anime?
/v/ and /a/ practically went head over heels for Tomoko. Tumblr had a lot of people following the manga, talking about the character really resonated with them, somehow, deviantart has a lot of really weird art of Tomoko and the main supporting cast, I think there even were some special French groups based on the manga. The anime obviously made it explode in popularity, at least until they announced an American dub to very lukewarm reactions, but it never really took off in Japan, which is just odd.
>When is there ever a strong following after the anime is done and the manga keeps going?
One Punch Man comes to mind. Actually, the fact that the anime is performing below expectations has been a huge incentive to people who weren't in on the arcs after Garou to pick up the webcomic, I suspect this is also why ONE has started making more of it as well.
Then Kaiji, I guess? Tonegawa rekindled interest in all of FKMT's series.
>>930181
But it was just 12 episodes and a very late OVA. I'd hardly say that's the mark of a successful anime. Yet I remember a lot of people talking about it and the fact that the authors acknowledged westerners was a big deal.

The MC's a hypocritical wannabe normalfuck with the same shitty mindset.
A couple of cheap shots at their target audience probably didn't help with the ones with an iota of pride when they realize the 2D cute girl is also a PD bitch like the many 3Ds regarding them with utter contempt for not being born a 9/10 and having 'the audacity' of being alive near them. The ones without the self degradation fetish don't want to be anywhere near that shit. I imagine the primary issue is that Tomoko is a female loser that places itself vastly above male losers, and that's an unfortunate reminder of reality. Most won't find that cute or entertaining and will be turned off by the whole thing entirely and more won't find it relateable at all.
There are also better options for them to look at for both entertainment and waifuing in the industry that don't remind them of the malicious cunts that shit on them for merely existing.
Just found a comment that describes this well when I was searching for a more relevant screencap but gave up because I spent too much time typing this shit out as is:
Watamote is to anime as The Big Bang Theory is to sitcoms.

Wasn't that the point, though? She was always trying to be seen as "normal" and well adjusted, but in reality she was a loser and her failures made her somewhat endearing to people feeling the same kind of alienation she did. Nowadays, it's literally like any other Isekai manga with a hero with dubious positive traits being surrounded by people way nicer than him. Nowadays, The Bing Bang Theory of Anime and Manga is a perfect way to describe the series.

Why you guys have to make this so weird? The whole manga was about a shallow girl with idealistic views of popularity, she tried too hard and because of that failed again and again, she got new experiences and change her outlook on things to a more realistic point of view and stop worrying about it, then she got what she wanted all along.
Why you have to make Tomoko an avatar of otakus or something? Just be happy about her, she got it better than most of us at least.

What? What kkind of retarded logic is that. I don't want to sound to "muh feminism" but should all the boys wear kilts then? Wouldn't that even make more sense?

Really the only thing keeping her from basically being a semi-moe NHK character is that she's still in high school and she has a friend who isn't utterly socially crippled.
Tomoko was and always will be the gender-swapped otaku, or rather, she IS a female otaku, but she had room for growth and was both a terrible girl we liked to mock while also being a reflection of us which gave us hope for betterment. Her little spurts in getting better was our encouragement, and our little triumphs helped us believe she could get better, too, given enough time.
Until they made it into a typical girl's club SOL with heavy yuri overtones. Now it's trash and I hate it.

That's a really well paced cute and sexy yuri doujin, with some decent but unremarkable art, some good character interaction, and, lots of warm and fuzzy feels. The only thing that sucks about it is that it's sharing names with Watamote characters who all act out of character.

Last chapter was alright. I hope this series ends soon because I can't stand how terrible it has become.
Going on pixiv to find some art about it is an uncanny experience, literally Tomoko got deleted out of her very own series in favor of some run of the mill tsundere and a bunch of cardboard cutouts. Ironically enough western artists still only care about characters from when the series was actually good.

How much can you recycle the 'social retard' joke til it gets old tho? And besides seeing Tomoko making limited if not moderate progress is real heartwarming. Like watching a parody of Komi-san, something close at least.

Being a social retard isn't a joke. It's the premise for a whole slew of jokes. And Watamote isn't supposed to be where you get heartwarming feelings from. SoL like Slow Start where one girl is supposed to be socially awkward but makes friends immediately anyway aren't too hard to find. The whole unique selling point of Watamote was how brutal it was. There's a reason the anime starts and ends the way it does. It isn't supposed to be about progress, it's supposed to be about identifying with Tomoko and her way of flawed thinking until it gets her into a social car crash and then watching the carnage unfold. That appeal was too niche to gain popularity though.

There was definitely plenty of second hand embarrassment but I wouldn't call the show brutal, it's not like Welcome to the NHK or something. I remember Nico saying they didn't even want to depict bullying at all because it would be too harsh.

She did have friends in middle school with Komi and Yuu so it's clear she's able to make friends with people. It's just that once she went to a different Highschool she basically had to start over from scratch to make friends.
So she's not a complete social retard but not outgoing enough to make friends quickly.

Usually I'd doubt it but with this manga I think it's a genuine possibility. It's in a weird place where it recently got a second wind and is getting more popular, but as you say we're now getting on to the final stretch already. I don't think they'd want to end it just as the only series Nico still have going is building up momentum again.
