SEASON 2

NEVER EVER

Discuss geology, hot pants, and suffering.

But hey, look on the bright side. All you filthy secondaries can pass the time by reading the manga. It'll be fine, you want to know what happens, right? Surely it can't get any worse...

Fuck Cairngorm, fuck Bort, and fuck all the other moon gems who don't even give a shit that Phos is suffering

It's not fair to raise hopes like that, anon.

I'd like to think that the reason there hasn't been an S2 announcement is that there isn't really a good point for a series finale after the gems go to the moon, and the prelude of Phos suffering until she decides to try to contact the Lunarians could be done fairly quickly in an animated format.

And the weathering thing sounds like bullshit in general. In a place with no wind, and in the past hundred years the only time the dust was unsettled was when morganite and goshenite were scattered. The kind of weathering he was suggesting is present on Earth, but on the moon, there isn't much that makes particles abrase against each other. IRL moon dust clumps together easily even when bone dry because the sediments are jagged and unweathered.

Did Phos ever have any friends aside from Antarc? Sensei is a soulless robot, Dia was nice but it was just empty pleasantries, everyone else was always annoyed by Phos and only even began to recognize her as anything other than annoyance once she got the gold arms, and then she was just "a strong fighter" to everyone, Cinnabar is desperate for any connections at all, but even that was hollow. Antarc alone valued Phos as a person.

Would also like to add that Dia is a bitch who hides hatred under a smile. She is just using the moon and Phos as an escape from Bort. She also uses her own shortcomings as an excuse to hate Bort. She didn't even let Bort know she was leaving, she just left Bort to guess as to what happened. Of course Bort couldn't fathom that Dia left just to hurt him and assumes Phos tricked her. Diamonds is the type of girl who would be wonderful and you'd think everything was great and then she suddenly cucks you out of nowhere. She wouldn't do it because she wanted to be a slut, she'd do it just to hurt you.

No, they usually use bits from their hair. Which is the place where there is less inclusions, therefore less memory bank storage, to replace bits of broken parts.

Which is why Phos's hair got so short during winter, the gold and platinum kept ripping her apart so she used bits of her hair.

I've finally started watching this.

I kept hearing about how well the CG was done, and the first episode has lived up to it. There are a few cases of the stuttery look typical of CG anime, but they're the exception rather than the rule, and it's clear a lot of effort went into it. What's more, it seems like the show takes advantage of the compositional benefits of the medium for once. It has pans, sweeps, and rotations of the camera, and small secondary motions of the characters, that are usually impractical for drawn animation. The show uses CG, instead of resorting to it.

The male pronouns in the subs feel strange though. Hearing them talk about "he" this, "him" that, it's sometimes hard to associate what they're saying to the character they're talking about.

From what I understand, there's a lot of pronoun games throughout the series, with the characters using a bizarre range of feminine and masculine language to build an alien feel to them. I think (I don't speak nip and am speaking 3rd hand) that the subs simplified it by just making everyone use male terms to refer to blatantly female gems.

 No.926550

>>926549

From what I remember the only noteworthy thing is that they use 彼 to refer to each other, which is typically a male pronoun. It is the Japanese equivalent to "him" but used far less commonly in Japanese simply because of how the language works, and it's also the de facto gender neutral third person pronoun for cases where you are talking about things that either don't have sexes or it's unclear what their sex is, like aliens or monsters or whatever, so it becomes more like a "they". If you really have to use either 彼 or 彼女 and you don't know which, and these cases are rare in native Japanese, you'd probably go with 彼.

It's been a while since I've watched the anime though so there might have been other stuff I missed, but I think the gist is that they are just animated rocks who are smooth around the bend. I think the anime makes them look pretty feminine but in the manga they do look a lot more deliberately androgynous.

I don't know much about Buddhism. But I was under the impression that it was a godless religion. Focused more about achieving enlightenment rather than worshipping a god or goddess. What exactly is prayer in this sense at all? What divine power is being petitioned? What about Adamant makes his prayers valid? Since he's a human creation, he's 0% human, but the gems are the devolved offspring of humans, so wouldn't they be closer to humanity than Adamant? A full human obviously is capable of praying, but the demi-human status of gems invalidates their prayers? But Adamant who isn't human at all somehow is capable? I'm starting to suspect another despair twist coming on where they activate Adamant but realize that he was never actually capable of praying. Then you have Phos who's apparently adding on important sacred Buddhist gifts onto her body and becoming more and more human as she gets more? Can someone translate this nip religion into something my Christian ass can understand?

Prayer, as it's known in the series is not a supernatural power. Rather, it's an artificially created function sensei has. I remenber it being mentioned that a lot of the words in the series has lost their original meaning, like how Kongo is called sensei, and the place the gems live is called a school, even though they aren't really these things.

That doesn't make any sense, though. The Moonies straight up said that they were lost souls of sinners who didn't have anyone to pray for them and couldn't pass on. Pretty sure that the gems can't pray because their only 3/5 1/3 of a human, while Adamant can because he was created by the professor specifically to keep the last human company and pray for the spirits left after the they died. From the recent chapters we see Adamant is probably capable of prayer, or at least was at some point. The problem was Adamant needs human authorization to perform certain tasks, and for some reason praying for the moon scum is one of them. But now that Phos is human enough to pass Adamant's {isHuman} check, we see there's something else "inbetween" him and being able to send the moonies to oblivion.

Everything Phos has added to her body has been one of the 7 Buddhist treasures. That's the full list. She's missing silver, which seemed a bit strange since her arms are a gold/platinum alloy. I'm not sure if platinum is supposed to be an approximation to silver or if it's just there for some other reason. The only other thing she's missing is Carnelian. She also seems to be getting more and more "human" as more treasures are added to her body. Antarc for example is as dead as physically possible for a gem and is gone forever. Phos is the only one who really knew Antarc, no one else really gave a shit (besides Adamant) Every gem has the hope that their friends can be restored, except for Phos. Phos has a complete understanding and experience of the grief of the death of a loved one, which is something a gem isn't supposed to be able to comprehend. Everything points to Phos becoming human.

Buddhism has too many traditions, local variations and sects to answer that question. For example, it actually disappeared from India after moslem conquerors destroyed one too many community of monks, and it had been only reintroduced relatively recently, so current Buddhism in its own homeland has nothing to do with original Buddhism. Then you have totally different Buddhist traditions in Southeast Asia than in the rest of Asia. There you have Theravada with its own cannon in the Pali language, and the rest have Mahayana with its writings in Sanskrit. As for the local traditions, a good example is how Tibetan Buddhism is very esoteric, because it's full of their original shamanism, and the country is (was) headed by a theocracy. Even in Japan you usually have a shrine for the local kami in every Buddhist monastery. And you have to go down one more level for the sects, because even in Japan you have at least three completely different Buddhist sects with their conflicting views and traditions.

But to be very general, no, they don't think that the world is not real, but they do believe in higher powers. Even the Pali Cannon, the most orthodox of all texts has Buddha going on about different worlds full of gods and spirits and demons. Ours is also supposed to have at least some of the later, and not as some kind of a metaphor. Most sects only pray to various Buddhas and enlightened monks who might help you by acting from an other world, but again, it depends on the very specific variety of Buddhism.

They aren't friends. They aren't even close to being friends. They might have become friends, but that opportunity is long gone. Phos forgot her promise, and Cinnabar resents her for it. Phos went her own way with pursuing Antarc, and Cinnabar found a place among the earth gems.

Cinnabar literally suggested cutting her up into little bits and hiding them, then they all forgot about her. If Adamant didn't step in, she'd be as good as dead, and unlike the moon (I still call bullshit on the moon being a poor environment to maintain a gem) the island is actually a poor environment for a mineral, because weathering actually happens a lot on earth, especially an island so small it's almost all coast. Without intervention from Adamant, she'd be as dead as Antarc. This is not something a friend suggests.

If you're really feeling the itch, go to your nearest natural history museum and spend some time wandering around their geology section.

I was in Vienna's NHM last week and I saw their gem and mineral collection. Almost everyone was there; Rutile, Zircon, Alexandrite, Cinnabar, an absolutely colossal sample of Amethyst, and so on. But while there was plenty of lapis lazuli, gold and platinum, agate (in the form of a phenomenal bowl in the treasury across the street), and everything else Phos has had stuck into her body, I didn't see any of Phosphophyllite herself.

If the reason Kongou wouldn't pray was because it would destroy the gems too, then the Lunarians' attacks on the gems must have been an attempt to convince him that prayer would be a mercy to the gems, relieving them from the purgatory of being ground into dust for eternity. That explains why the spread the dust across the moon, since then he has a constant reminder of the fate that awaits them after capture. But that doesn't explain why they sent down fake gem bits, which would only serve to give a very faint spark of hope that the lost gems might be saved.

True suffering isn't that the promise will never be fulfilled. True suffering is that most of it already was, and it cost so much.

Cinnabar no longer wants to go to the moon. She has started to feel like she belongs. She did things the other gems agree only she could have done. There is a place for her among the other gems now.

I'm not sure Phos even remembers why she's doing this in the first place. She doesn't call Adamant Sensei anymore, just "machine", if he prays and sends just the moon people back like she believes will happen then the moon gems will be stranded alone on the moon, there will be no way to restore any lost gems, and the earth gems will probably just tear her limb from limb again.

Phos has become a crazed, feral animal. So filled with hatred that as she just swipes wildly at whoever is closest.

I thought the Lunarians told her that the machinery and such would stay. Wasn't that why Amethyst originally started learning how everything worked?

It's evidently untrue, even aside from whether the Bones go with the Souls, since the Lunarians' facilities started to go all melty when Adamant began praying, but I thought that was what Phos believed.

Note that Alexandrite is still blindfolded. Before Phos's last trip there had been talk of a procedure to deal with her issue, but that clearly hasn't happened. It isn't simple selfishness for them to ignore everything, because they're not even doing things that would personally benefit them. They're entirely apathetic, and are willing to let the days go by exactly the same, for two hundred years, accomplishing nothing.

It's no wonder Yellow went insane.

It feels like all of the fun and cute little scenes were just lies. A human sums up those fun little moments you have with others and grows an actual bond with others, and that bond shines in important situations. But gems aren't like that. All those little moments don't add up to anything, they're all just paper thin. A gem can spend years with another and then lose them without batting an eye. There's a cold distance between everyone despite living like a family. Diamond for example seems like a nice girl, but she doesn't actually care about anyone other than herself. After seeing her going unfazed from Phos getting slaughtered by the earth gems, I'm not so sure if the deaths of any of her friends would affect her at all. Her kindness is a lie, she wouldn't even go to your funeral, much less cry for you.

"Their" is just obnoxious to read. It's bad enough in normal English when you're talking about two people with the same pronoun and it's unclear which is which, and using "their" for everyone makes it even worse by removing singular/plural context too.

The official translation dodged the problem by never using pronouns for the gems at all.
