How many weeks did /a/ go without a KF thread? They were pretty much constant even a year after it aired, and now interest is just gone. We all knew "Season 2" would fucking kill it but it still hurts to see it happen. Grape-kun didn't deserve this. None of us did. Let us reminisce the good times.

We knew it'd happen but it fucking surpassed all expectations for shit. Not even EA could kill a franchise so spectacularly. I'm still mad about all of it and the worst part is I don't even think Kikedokawa cares it failed.

Kadokawa probably has a bunch of new franchises lined up and doesn't want to spoil their schedule. They're really good at destroying their own properties- look at what happened to Kancolle, it's getting eaten alive by Azur Lane. No wonder the otaku hate them.

Season 2 was pretty disjointed. Introduce Beast but it doesn't get brought up until the middle and end. Cerulean's were missing for most of the 1st half of the show and don't have much plot relevance until the end. Beast and Cerulean plot don't intersect until the end. More money put into 3D model but with worse animation than the 1st season. Also, the terrible texturing on the Cerulean's that I don't know why they went with that. It was about as soulless as you would expect and misses the charm of the 1st season. There is another kemono friends thing out but it's shorts for the game and there is really not much to talk about for it.

Considering that the franchise is owned by a large production committee, it is questionable if there were even significant returns for Kadokawa.
>>925517
> it's getting eaten alive by Azur Lane
Kantai Collection is slowly dying but it's doubtful that it has anything to do with Azur Lane, which ( based on the doujin numbers ) is dying even faster.
That a new franchise drops 33% of its circles in half a year isn't common and implies that Azur Lane has a short shelf life. Also, the current C96 predictions include another drop for Azur Lane. It isn't unlikely that Azur Lane becomes irrelevant by C97/98. The idea of a x-killer franchise is very popular online, but in reality it's almost never true. Most large franchises die a slow death.
Number of circles: C94 ---> C95
Kantai Collection: 1751 ---> 1607
Azur Lane: 569 ---> 376
>at destroying their own properties
>their own
It's a joint ownership by C2 and Kadokawa, and Kadokawa has signed lots of their rights away to DMM. They barely get anything from the game's revenue.
Tanaka (creator) has to my knowledge still the control of the IP, Kadokawa only has the rights for secondary materials. Everything is overseen by Tanaka.
The issue is that being a good doujin artist doesn't make you a good producer, game developer or anime writer. It doesn't help that Kadokawa Games (pre From Software purchase) didn't create anything acclaimed outside of visual novels and the Maker software.

I'd hardly consider that an accurate metric on anything. Kancolle has a dedicated fanbase of autists keeping it alive, but the game is basically dead. I don't think AL had much to do with that though. Even if it is the better game.

Abandon the faulty official works and turn your gaze upon the awesome fanmade creations instead.
Just recently a top-notch screen version of a widely acclaimed fanfic "Kemono's Instinct" has finally gotten an English translation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrO17ZRrRNQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybtabYzjp5c
Check it out right now, it's two full-length episodes with the most professionally-made video and voiceover among any MMD PVs I've seen. The models look great, there are even some 2D effects, but more importantly the main characters are the best Friends of the Jungle region.
To elaborate on the source material - it's one of the longest Japanese fanfics, in the making for 1.5+ years, that tells the alternative ending story where the Friends were unable to seal the Sandstar Raw in time.
The videos I linked only scratch the surface of the whole thing and tell the story of a single region (Jungle) of the many involved in the story.

Doujin numbers of otaku franchises correlate with popularity in otaku circles. I somewhat doubt that the tens of thousands of otaku buying Kancolle doujins don't have any interest in the main part of the franchise. This is just another case of "X is dead" the moment it stops showing growth. I have never touched Kancolle or Azur Lane, and I despise the browser/mobile kusoge that are popular with "modern otaku". I wish Kancolle was dead, but it isn't. Kancolle has an upcoming anime, an actively updated game and a very active community. The Kancolle is dead narrative started the moment their Comiket numbers started dropping. This is the exact same thing that happened when Kancolle dethroned Touhou and Touhou was instantly "dead". Or when DBS made over twice of One Piece's revenue and somehow "killed" One Piece.

That's largely in the West and not in Japan. The person going to Reitaisai and the "I listen casually to Touhou music and know what Touhou is" are different types of people. Besides some online-jokes Touhou isn't accessible for normalfags and the community is filled with elitism. You shouldn't even refer to Touhou by name if you're around normalfags (or anyone with insufficient power level).
Considering the unclear lore, the giant amount of high quality fanworks which includes references to miniscule details from the official content. It's the least normalfag friendly franchise out there. Most people only dive into the surface layer of Touhou, but Touhou has a lot of depth.
There's nothing in the doujin-scene that comes even close to the quality of the top Touhou doujins And I am not talking about H-content here.
Why do you think the Steam release was delayed for so long? Zun didn't want more casuals to flood the community during the Touhou boom. The West has so many ironic Touhou-fags because it's expected that an "otaku" loves Touhou. The "I thought Gensoukyou was only about cute innocent girls with hats" are the worst ironic Touhou-fags.

All this art, kept, preserved, documented, respected the world over, but something like Kemono Friends, and so many other deserving manga and anime, will just be relegated to oblivion because it came in an age of mass-produced art. Yes, we can enjoy so many great things, and heal as needed, without even leaving our beds, but it's too much to catalogue, too fleeting to care for the decades needed to create a museum, and too cheap for a rich family to obsess over and collect.
People in the past centuries couldn't have known the famous art of their day would still be celebrated past the second millenium, but we in the present can see everything we love will not be remembered anywhere near as well in 2219.

There are anime and manga that do deserve to be remembered but never even get watched, like ID-0 or the Bakabon remake, not to mention all the obscure old anime that has probably become literally unobtainable these days. And sitting around moping about how one of the most popular anime in recent years isn't going to be remembered after humanity nukes itself into oblivion it isn't going to help conserve the art worth conserving like buying an extra HDD will, faggot.

Yes, it's true enclosures are restrictive and boring for a lot of free-roaming species, but you know what beats boredom? Not being fucking extinct. Without zoos, axolotls would be a handful of individuals dying a slow death in a single one polluted shithole of a lake in mexico. Zoos let the arabian oryx and the przewalski's horse not only survive, but get successfully reintroduced in their natural habitat. Shit, tigers may have fun in their native asia but they face extinction because there's like a million bugmen and street shitters out for their pelts and balls for "traditional medicine". As a matter of fact, felines, despite benefiting from the cute animal bias, have most of their species in some form of threat. Humanity is responsible for a lot of animal suffering, but zoos are part of the solution, even if they're not ideal for some species.

They likely never really cared about it that much anyway. Kadokawa is a very risk averse company and sells constantly sells rights to other companies in order to lower risks. KF and even KanColle aren't nearly as profitable for them as many anons think, because they share the profits with ten different companies.
They're risk averse to a strange degree. E.g. why did they partner with Activison for the international release of Sekiro? The IP is owned by From Software and therefore Kadokawa, Activision only has international distribution rights. Was the PR campaign by Activison worth it? They do seem to want to expand their game division internationally, so it is weird that they're making international distribution deals with other publishers.

>Without zoos, axolotls would be a handful of individuals dying a slow death in a single one polluted shithole of a lake in mexico.
That's wrong, axolotls are a model organism. They're a prime research animal and easy to breed. There was always going to be a stable population for research with or without zoos.
And while I do agree that zoos help conservation efforts, you're ignoring the negative effects caused by zoos. Some of the animals you see in zoos are not legally obtained, and zoos are providing significant funding for illegal animal trade. The zoos are well aware that some of their "captive breed" animals from a certified breeder are wild animals with fake papers. The prices for these "captive" breed animals are in many cases so low that it would be impossible to breed them at that price point without extreme financial loses.
Another issue are newly discovered species. Many poaching groups just wait for the scientists to do their work for them. New rare species is discovered ---> scientists publish paper ---> collectors read the paper (wants animal) ----> poachers read the paper and learn where said animal lives ---> go there and capture the species ---> because of a lack of regulation, the new species doesn't even need to get laundered as captive breed ----> poachers sell the entire wild population ----> collectors buy them, a lack of regulation for species not classified by CITES even makes this legal in some cases.

>That's wrong, axolotls are a model organism. They're a prime research animal and easy to breed.
Yes, because of zoos. You stupid ass clearly hasn't found the time to research the natural state of axolotls. Let me spell it out for you. They are native to only one lake in Mexico that is getting polluted to shit. If it weren't for aquariums around the world, this species would be fucking gone. Let's see what you're arguing next.
>zoos are providing significant funding for illegal animal trade.
I'll just do you a favor, ignore this horrendously retarded phrase, and just move on to your main argument.
>poachers hunt according to the IUCN
Okay, your reasoning is that poachers in third world countries are avid readers of the IUCN they realistically don't have access to, and can instantly sell rare species to collectioners that are also avid readers of the IUCN. Never mind that selling pelts that just look pretty and selling dessicated animal penises fetch a pretty penny on the chinese marketplace. Don't be an idiot, anon. Poachers don't give a shit about conservation status, and neither do chinese marketplaces.

Zoos have nothing to do with the biological charactertistics of axolotls that make them a good laboratory animal. And zoos aren't research institutes that breed axolotls as laboratory animals. They have been one of the most important lab animals since the late 1800s. They are used for cancer reserach and regenerative research. If we understand how axolotls regenerate their limbs, then it might be possible to recreate the process. Axolotls were never popularized by zoos, they were popularized by labs, scientists and breeders. Since lab animals need to be breed in high quantities, they have become available for the public. There are breeding facilities that house multiple thousand axolotl. Labs are also responsible for spreading public awareness about Axolotls, because the captive population is at riks of inbreeding. Which isn't a surprise since many of them are descendants from 34 individuals that were brought to Europe by a expedition in 1863. Also, most of the captive axolotl are part tiger salamander because of morons in New York who had the amazing idea to cross them with tiger salamanders.
For fucks sake, educate yourself about the axolotl. Here's a good starting point: https://www.nature.com/magazine-assets/d41586-017-05921-w/d41586-017-05921-w.pdf
Alright, take a deep breath and reread my post. Also, stop with the exessive green texting, it turns you into a retard. You're almost holding a soliloquy.
>just move on to your main argument.
<poachers hunt according to the IUCN
Wasn't even my argument. I haven't even mentioned the IUCN in my post. CITES is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Also, this was a second issue separate from zoos buying poached animals. See "Another issue", it is not the same issue.
>they realistically don't have access to
You can't be serious. It's the 21th century, there's something known as the internet. New species are described in scientific journals. Normal citizens have access to many of the papers describing newly discovered species. Here, a paper describing a new bird species. Discovered in 2018 https://academic.oup.com/auk/article-abstract/135/4/1146/5149014?redirectedFrom=fulltext , you get access for only $45. Certain sites, even have it for free.
>Okay, your reasoning is that poachers in third world countries are avid readers of the IUCN they realistically don't have access to, and can instantly sell rare species to collectioners that are also avid readers of the IUCN
Yes, rare animal collectors can check the news if a new species has been discovered. And the same thing is true for poachers.
"Just four months after Zootaxa published discovery information about a new leaf-tailed gecko in Madagascar last summer, the animal began appearing in Europa"
"In 2013, Marinus Hoogmoed and his wife announced the discovery of a new light blue morph of poison dart frog (Dendrobates galactonotus) – and its location in Amazonian Brazil – in the Phyllomedusa journal.
Three months later, a terrarium keeper in Germany sent him photos of the new morph, which he said he had been offered on the German trade circuit, at prices of between €350-700."

No I don't. If you read wikipedia:

Isn't it a good description of Anon? He sees school shooting and he laughs, he sees person of the edge of suicide and he tells him the best way to do it, he sees guro or snuff film and he masturbates. Psychopathy is a good description to behaviour that is often practised on imageboards.

That isn't the same thing. It doesn't take a psychopath to tell someone who says he's going to kill himself to do a flip, to laugh when subhumans get gunned down or to have weird fetishes. It's normal behavior to not care what happens to people you don't care about, especially when they deserve whatever happens to them. It's when you don't care for the things you should care about like family and friends and when you show no empathy for "innocents" like animals that you start having a problem. Even Anons generally look after their own. Being pragmatic and acknowledging that humans have every right to assert their dominance over other species for our own benefit is not the same as deliberately causing unnecessary suffering and tormenting them. If you're a member of a social species and you show you can't show empathy for animals weaker than you, it doesn't bode well for how well you're going to interact with your peers.

That's old prejudice from the 1700s, when the early scientific revolution sought to separate mankind from nature. The same people who laughed at Darwin who instead tied man to animals.
In truth, the West was built on the idea that there is continuity between the cognition of animal and man. Empathy toward the suffering of animals is one of our distinctive features, completely ignored by some other societies like the Chinese.

>Can you kill the appeal of going to the zoo?
Not in general but you can kill the appeal of going to one particular zoo.
Hardly anybody even knew about this one before it was almost forced to close down. Then this one guy gets pu in charge and he manages to attract tons of new visitors with his ideas. He didn't even have much money or any rare species to show but he way he put his heart into his work and designed each individual enclosure is what lead to his success. It was just fun to watch the animals and even a bit educational. Of course people were looking forward to his future plans.
But then the original owners forced him out when they saw how successful it had become. They wanted to make even more money off it,so they bought more species, added decorations to the enclosures and even did special animal shows. However, it just turned into an unappealing mess, with none of the soul it had before they got involved again.
So yeah, they certainly ruined the appeal of going to that zoo.
