It's come to my attention that you can now use transparency with WebMs, so it can utterly replace GIF for animations. Simple example of static image.

ffmpeg -i aud.webm -i ploot.png -c:v libvpx-vp9 -pix_fmt yuva420p -b:v 0 -crf 20 -c:a copy -f webm -loop -shortest test_vp9.webm

With animations, you'd have it de-composed into per-frame PNG files, then FFmpeg can use those via something like this:

cat *.png | ffmpeg -f image2pipe -r <framerate> …

I'm interested how well this is supported since I just fresh installed Debian 10 after a botched update to it. Firefox 60.8.0esr and Chromium 73.0.3683.75 work. VLC 3.07 can't display the video. I have mpv and FFmpeg and libvpx built from Git just today, mpv by default doesn't handle the transparency correctly unless run with -vd libvpx-vp9 in that case it's got checkerboard background. Said FFmpeg was what I encoded with too.

Enough of that though, I mainly want to point out that that anime is great at making fun of such things and if you like to see attention to different niche subcultures to watch it. It's the Akiba's Trip animation. The circle crusher one is from the episode devoted to poking fun at card games, but especially Yu-Gi-Oh! where they even give the ridiculous spiky hair to the two combatants. That's easily the best episode, with the rest being hit or miss, but it only really falls apart when the overarching story has to be tied up.
