So, I'm in the middle of watching Layzner and Everyone just keeps fucking dying, holy shit.

There's some great tactics in the battles and I like the way the mechs move in this. The weapon beams are stylish, but it gets a little distracting at times. What did you think of this? It's a brutal show so far and the visuals are nice.

In any case, what mecha have you been into lately? Let's have another mecha thread.

I've just finished Aura Battler Dunbine, one of Tomino's works. I liked the mecha designs alot how they are really buglike with dragonfly wings and claws being a common design element. They also make the regular Earth military not retarded, in the last third of the show they start crashing fighter planes into enemy battlers/battleships to get past their magic bullshit shields

I felt like the plot was kinda okay-ish, they had a lot of problems by introducing characters in the beginning of an episode and killing them off by the end. The only reason you care is because you see an established character be effected by it for some reason. Some of the antagonists are pretty good as well like my man Todd Guiness for being the equivalent Jerid of the show.

Dunbine is what he made right before Zeta, right? How does it compare to Ideon, Xabungle, and L-Gaim, the other anime he made between Gundam and Zeta?

I honestly like his non-Gundam anime the best.

I haven't seen any other non-Gundam Tomino yet, so I couldn't tell you. I started to watch Dunbine a few weeks ago because of that thread about Mecha fans not really caring for the entire genre. I am a huge fan of Gundam (specifically UC, but I did watch After War which I liked), but aside from Gainax (Gunbuster, Eva, Gurren Lagann) and VOTOMS stuff I never really expanded my horizons until now.

>>923164

I've actually just built a Gouf a few weeks ago, my other stuff I've been has been a Hazel Custom, and a Blue Destiny Unit 1. So does anyone know if you sand the nubs down or cut with an X-acto knife? I haven't been doing mine with sandpaper so it digs into the plastic.

>So does anyone know if you sand the nubs down or cut with an X-acto knife? I haven't been doing mine with sandpaper so it digs into the plastic.

I just got into next level building myself, so I'll share what I've found works best for me.

I use the knife to cut off the nub as much as possible, then use a fine grain sanding stick to sand it down the rest of the way. DON'T use heavy sanding grit for this, or God forbid a metal file. I learned this the hard way. 30503 works well for me most of the time, but 30505 is preferable in many situations, so pick up both. 30502 is the heaviest I'd use, and only in non-common circumstances.

I learned this through trial and error. Don't make the same mistakes I did.

Also, listening to the entire Gundam vocal discography while building is top-tier. Doing it right now with my Gouf. It's the best.

What are you planning on picking up next? Another Tomino? In my experience, they're all worth it.

What about a Super Robot anime for a change of pace? Ideon is like a mix of military-focus mobile suit-type and Super Robot with some good SF in there. It's what Tomino made straight after the original Gundam and was actual super influential in the industry, even though it was cancelled early.

If you do watch Ideon, just make sure to watch the movies after. They complete the actual intended story similar to how EoE does.

>>923163

Dunbine is more serious than L-Gaim and Xabungle, and less emotionally charged than Ideon. The closest comparison would probably be Zeta Gundam. You should also check out Vifam which is another anime Tomino worked on between 0079 and Zeta, though all he did was come up with the basic idea of the show. It's one of the best early 80s mecha in my opinion.

I've actually already seen Victory, it's a weird show. It's in the UC timeline but it doesn't really feel like it (Zolos transforming into helicopters using minovsky beams to generate lift, motorcycle battleships etc.) I did like the Victory's design though and the idea that the Federation would slowly collapse over time as a result of it's own corruption and Laplace's Box.

I wonder if F91 would've been as weird if it were a full length series rather than the compilation film we got.

They have actually made good progress and kept their promise to having a walking 1:1 scale Gundam by then. They've hired on a guy last year to the team who helped make the double arm Hitachi excavator, I've known about him since 2015, surprised they picked him up. He was inspired by Gundam to make the excavator's double arm, and now he's actually helping make an official Gundam, pretty cool.

I'm watching M7, about 30 episodes in myself.

It's fucking stupid, silly, ridiculous, and charming. There's a point where you've got to let yourself be mind broken by the stupidity and just listen to his song. It's as if M7 was designed with that in mind, because nothing else is like this. I love it.

Just finished watching Macross. Holy fuck, the end was great. I am not a big fan of mecha, but this anime really captured my heart, probably one of the best anime ever. I am really glad, that Misa has won. She was a lot better than Minmei. But I would have chosen Shammy for myself, though. I wonder how would she react if I suddenly pull out a dick in front of her.

This looks interesting, will watch it later. I am planning to watch Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam, Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru and Aura Battler Dunbine before that, though.

Meanwhile I finished watching Macross Plus, Do You Remember Love and Lovers Again. Lovers again was kinda meh, liked only the girl with the heart on the cheek, but the rest were good. Do You Remember Love was especially interesting, I didn't expect it to bee a complete redone and expected something Gundam Movies, so I want to thank Anon who recommended me it. None of them as Good as the original series, though, but it is to be expected, they were a lot shorter. And they lacked a charm of the original: globalist propaganda about stopping wars with spreading a common culture, reasoning about the nature of the people and war, and strong classic scifi vibes. They have done a good job talking about personal conflicts and love and they very well can be loved, but they just didn't have such a strong impact on me. I have hopes for Macross 7 and other longer titles, but I guess I will watch them a bit later, don't want to gulp everything in one bite.

>In any case, what mecha have you been into lately?

RPG Legend Hepoi.

In which a stuffed toy gathers a party and travels the world to defeat the demon king, with countless puns and lighthearted approach. Except the demon king in this story turns out to be exceptionally competent, conquering the world halfway through the show. He stops sending out his useless henchmen whom the hero could use to level up, instead personally going after the underleveled hero and easily winning.

Then all hell breaks loose. In the world corrupted by evil, there's no place for trust and friendship anymore. Everything the hero fought for has been reduced to ruin. Everyone he loved has been brutally murdered. Instead of comically defeating cartoonish villains the hero must now kill normal humans in order to survive, wondering whether there's any point in surviving in the first place. All he can rely on now is his bloodstained fist. And so he proclaims "This fist of mine shall become a conceptual sword!". And so he keeps fighting on. And so the legend begins.

Complete with a puny stuffed toy taking down giant robots with his bare hands.

Okay, sorry for not replying sooner. I've thought about what to say and realized I should just tell the whole story from the beginning as far as I know it. If I get something wrong, I hope an anon can correct me.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross started as the first in a line of three unrelated mech anime, including: Super Dimension Century Orguss and Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross.

It was common practice during this time to fund unrelated anime together as a package like so.

Big West, the production and advertising company, gave the first of these titles to unknown, throwaway studios: Artland, which was just put together in Tokyo for this, and Studio Nue, which was made up of hardcore, SF con-going otaku who did in-between work on various mecha anime in the past and who are seen as the big-brother studio to GAINAX. They are the true first otaku animation studio. In fact, they helped out with some of the con planning and work DAICON FILM and pre-Daicon Confederation of Kansai SF clubs did before they were GAINAX. When they got the call from Tokyo to make an anime, they called out to everyone they knew from their con days and this included several of the Daicon, pre-Gainax guys, including Anno, Yamaga, and Akai. This is where the Gainax guys met Sadamoto and various other otaku who made Gainax with them later.

You can see Anno's mecha and explosion animation handiwork present in many of the early episodes and in particular with the Zentraedi ship exploding when struck by the Macross Cannon present in the OP.

As this was the first time otaku were in charge of making anime, they threw together a story they felt combined all of their passions: military, robots, SF, idol, etc. It's worth it to note how it was those three Zentraedi who ultimately stopped the war because they became Minmay otaku, and eventually began selling doujin products of her, exactly like what otaku were starting to do at the time in real life and still do to this day.

Also, because it was the first anime made by these weird "otaku" types (and the term "otaku" began to come into being), they were given the smallest budget Big West could afford. They had no faith in the series and actively stymied the toy products in advertising expense. They had to send several episodes to Korea, but it was the sole effort of Studio Nue and the animation team that pulled together a miracle hit. They had only planned for the first 26 episodes, but Big West gave them several more when they pulled their head out of their ass and saw the sales. This is the reason behind the after war arc that seemed to come out of nowhere.

In addition, at around the half way point of the series as it was planned then, Anno and the Gainax gang left Tokyo to go make amateur doujin con anime again with DAICON IV coming around and their buddies back home hosting it. They also pulled a lot of talent from the Macross crew when leaving, including Sadamoto, which already gave the Gainax gang a bad reputation in the industry. They were a wild bunch back then.

By the time DYRL came to being made, the Daicon Film guys were done with animating for the time being and Anno had just made his Ultraman doujin film, so he went back to Tokyo alone to work on DYRL and his idol, Miyazaki's new film, Naussicaa.

After DYRL was over, most of Daicon Film came to Tokyo and made GAINAX together with Anno.

Now, that's where things get fucky. After the Flashback 2012 OVA, which was a short music video collection they made for Minmay taking place after the series, Studio Nue didn't want to do anymore Macross. It was over, the story was complete and it was beautiful and precious.

Big West didn't agree. They wanted to milk this cash cow as long as it would moo, and when Nue declined, they went to someone completely unrelated and forced them to push out Macross II, which followed after the DYRL movie.

After this, Studio Nue decided an OVA one of the guys was working on would be Macross-related, in order to compete with and snub their noses at Big West. This was Macross Plus. It actually has nothing to do with Macross and the name was thrown on last minute. Most of the original crew had nothing to do with it.

After agonizing good a good decade over it, the whole Macross Crew, minus the Gainax guys, got together to make a true sequel to Macross, Macross 7. And that story should address much of your post.

What do you mean by that? Robotech still existed during all that, I just didn't add it to the narrative because it's something else entirely.

When the Gainax guys went to America to research for Royal Space Force, they saw Robotech and couldn't believe it. This is what Otaking wrote:

>Yeah, we were very surprised. Suddenly, in our little hotel room, on our little TV, there’s a little Minmei. And, the voice-actor was saying [IMITATES “RICK HUNTER” VOICE], “Oh, Minmei, Minmei…” AAAAAAAHHH!!! [LAUGHS] We couldn’t believe it, and had a good laugh.

>>925766

Yeah, things like that were added to make it more "Macross" but the story could have worked any other way. Take out the Zentraedi thing and it's the same story. It wasn't Macross and the Macross team didn't even work on it.

Thank you for your answer. And don't worry about answering late, it's not like I have been waiting for your answer or anything, hmph.

Even though I already new most of it, there was some interesting information. Honestly, I knew that OVA has little to do with the original series, but I wanted to give it a chance. In my experience there were cases, when much later anime, made by different people was on the level of the original, even better at some points, or at list was a completely different experience, not even trying to be like original and being great in it's own way. Sadly, this didn't happen with Macross Plus, but at least some parts were enjoyable, like gorgeously drawn Macross and battle animations. Though, it lacked an essence necessary to become a good anime.

P.S. Did anyone notice that in Macroos Hikaru used word "otaku" in it's original meaning, as "you"?

Mazinger manga is complementary to the show, not a stand-alone work by any means. Moreover, the only English-translated version of the manga is a Frankenstein cadaver assembled from parts of many different editions, which is why it has plot lines appear out of nowhere and disappear likewise without a proper resolution.

Watch Toeizinger for starters, without skipping anything. It holds up perfectly, and its strongest point lies in the characters growing on you with each new episode. The rest of the franchise relies on the viewer's familiarity with the original, and you're free to watch/read them as you see fit.

In case you can't handle 200-something episodes of an old MOTW mecha, follow the wise words of Dr. Hell.

You fucking retards. Having a popular singer does not make it an idol anime.

Minamy just happened to be in when the Zentradi spies were on board. She was also worst girl and totally irrelevant 99% of the time.

The Zentradi liked all aspects of earth culture. Music didn't have any special power, she just happened to be in and was chosen as a face during the broadcast.

You could easily dump Minmay and her song from the show and it would change nothing.

It was the later macrosses that would push the idol aspect to the absurd.

Don't gaslight yourself just because you don't like the latter series. Let's not even talk about that, let's talk about the original.

Macross was SF about culture influencing a war. I know what you mean by "power of music bullshit" as presented by later series, and that's not what I mean by saying the war was influenced by the power of music.

Okay, so by this we can agree that the war was influenced by music, right? All of culture had an impact, but it was the power of Minmay's song during the final battle that swayed the hearts of the Zentraedi fleet, and this is what ultimately won the war. McDonald's and romance wouldn't have done it in such a short amount of time, and humanity would have been killed off sooner than they could have influenced the Zentraedi.

So, using this logic, we can assert that Minmay was indeed instrumental in winning that war.

And about it being an idol anime, yes, it created the genre. Minmay is the first anime idol. You can't whitewash that piece of history away just because you don't like the genre or what later series were like. Stop being such a faggot.

Having shit taste is still having shit taste. Wanting to push pop music into another medium is going to degrade that medium down to pop cultures level. It also opens the doors to stuff like Carole and Tuesday to push a huge agenda with it.

Some times you will enjoy shit things and that's just how life goes. It doesn't mean you should be supporting shit things because it does have consequences down the line. Idol games and animes are even worse than yearly call of duty releases but their target market don't care. It becomes more profitable to make virtual dolls than an interesting world or interesting gameplay so you get stuck with virtual dolls doing awful dancing as your only options in entertainment.

I personally can't understand why any one finds that style of dancing appealing. It looks like a pack of retards flailing around and humping things. It's so unappealing that it becomes cringe worthy to me. I just don't get it. What's the appeal of having 40 women flail around?

Idol animes or moe blob animes in general seem to be more of an appeal to the leg beard market in Japan. They're animated soap operas designed to rotate and be disposable rather than a worth while piece of entertainment themselves.

Point is, there was nothing special about songs in the original macross. No hidden power, no hyponsis, no nothing. It was just music used to confuse the Zentradi.

You could have replaced Minmays song with any other bad or with Bethooven, and it would have had the same effect.

>>934090

No. Minmays song just confused them long enough for the SDF to strike a killing blow against their HQ.

Zentradi were already being confsed enough by the "betrayl" and didn't suddenly switch sides when they heard her sing. They gave up (some of them at leat) after the death of their leader.

Also, something spawning a genre does not make it a prime example of that genre. Heck, it does not even make it genre, since you can make A out of B, that doesn't make B A.

She's playing a role to appeal to a demographic, which is often the lonely men and the teenage girls. You're never going to meet her, she's never going to know you exist and she's got a manager telling her where to be and how to act at all times.

You're fetishizing Japan and acting like the exact same behaviour is noble there and vile here for no good reason. If anything it's worse in Japan because they all pretend to be kissless virgins while making softcore porn videos. For all the flaws of the celebrity culture at least they're honest about being whores. Thinking otaku jerk off to idols is like a sickness in your brain. Please stop talking as if you know anything.

>>934122

That sort of stuff probably does happen, but only in big mainstream units like AKB, but not to the extent you're imagining. In fact, it's easier to promise a girl stardom and take advantage of her without making her an idol, just throw her away when they're done, which is exactly the stories of what happens.

When an actual idol gets taken advantage of, it usually impacts her performance and causes severe depression and suicide.

Idol fans are extremely critical about performances, and I don't think they'd be able to make so many smile if they were going through shit like that in most cases. Stop getting tricked by the memes.

>>934118

You're wrong in three ways.

>Attacking waifuism

Idols shine most when they are themselves on stage, despite their roles. The best producers highlight the best aspects of each girl, but it's only the girl themselves who can shine in the end, meaning despite any role she's playing, her own personality will shine through in the end. Fans love it when a composed-type idol starts tripping on stage, acting the baka, or cry during performances. This isn't Kpop, this isn't Showa, this isn't the West. Idols regularly meet with their fans, MC sections are completely unscripted. They're idols because they naturally shine.

You have a twisted mind, assuming everyone to be whores. Idols put aside personal romance to walk the path for their fans. Western celebrities flaunt their relationships. It's completely different. Western celebrities are not idols. To be an idol is to live a life for everybody, not for themselves.

>>934099

You just love projecting ignorance, don't you?

Are Showa Toku shows not targeted to kids because they feature adult protagonists? Gundam was a kids anime, just like all mecha shows at that time. Next you'll say Zambot 3 was for adults.

The Brave series was a return to form at a time when the genre needed it most. And Western newfags don't like traditional mecha.

Both Pink Lady and Hirai Michiko were popular idols far before they were in any anime. What I mean by "the first anime idol" is that Minmay is what made Mari Iijima, making her the first idol from an anime, the likes of which we see often nowadays, not that it's the first time an idol was in an anime.

I may not know enough Japanese, but I know idols.

What's some good mecha mangos? Something that does well to express the size and weight of mechs. A lot of Gundam series suffer where they have pages of combat that looks too static and dull. I remember Bokurano being enjoyable and giving a lot of weight to the mechs.

Layzner was fuck. It was pretty good until the last bit when they changed everything due to having their time cut. It could have been something great if it wasn't cancelled.

Let me tell you a secret. It's Dragon Ball Z. Toriyama ripped off was inspired by Layzner because it aired alongside the original DragonBall anime. Think about it.

Gradosians=Saiyans. The V-MAX, the scouters.

Layzner is a battle action anime.

They made a 3 part OVA compilation, and the third was actually an extended version of the final episode which serves as a much better ending than the original.

As for Toriyama ripping off Layzner, yeah I can see it. One of the criticisms I have is that by the end fights between SPTs turn into them mashing into eachother like someone playing with action figures. Fights become resolved by Rei activating V-MAX as an I win button. I still think VOTOMS is Takahashi's best work.

VOTOMS had the benefit of not being cancelled mid-production.

My problem with Layzner is that it started out pretty serious and engaging all the way through, the V-MAX coming in as a surprise, but then after the time skip everything becomes silly while it still takes itself just as seriously as before.

But even though I have problems with it, I have to admit V-MAX is just super cool. There's a reason Toriyama stole took inspiration from it.

It would have been nice if Eiji didn't use it so often later on. Remember when fuel and energy were big concerns, and V-MAX drained Rei, so it wasn't something to be used too much?

Stuff like that was thrown out the window after they found out it was being cancelled.

Started watching Rayearth as well since it was also in SRW T, and I've got to say there's much less mecha than I was expecting. Still fun though, hard to go wrong with 90s Clamp.

Rayearth was CLAMP's first manga, and I'd say it's a pretty legendary start. I don't know what the anime is like, but I really enjoyed the manga. If you're looking for mecha, though, you aren't going to find much there. It's more an isekai fantasy comedy. CLAMP is all girls, and girls don't into mecha.

Although it's like a parody throughout, It has a very dramatic, great twist in the end, so look forward to that.

From Google Translated Japanese wikipedia:

>However, in the second half of the 1990s, the shadow of “Brave series” and “Heisei Gundam” began to appear offensive to viewer ratings and television station conditions, and in the 2000s, Post-Eva's works lost their momentum, and their successors The robot animation has a general tendency to decline without any big tidal current. In particular, robot animation in full- day animation became extinct , and airing in late-night animation became a de facto standard. Of the programs in which giant robots appear, only the special effects " Super Squadron Series " continues broadcasting on all days.

>This is due to the withdrawal of sponsors due to the slump in the toy industry as a whole due to an increase in options due to the diversification of hobbies by the spread of home games and trading card games, etc., and the relationship between television stations and production companies and toy companies. And, as the ratio of children to the total population of Japan decreased, the percentage of customers who could obtain more from it decreased, and the traditional classic obsolescence due to the development of real technology and changes in the situation It was the main factor. At the end of these times and circumstances, the computer game ( Visual Novel ) “ To Heart Series”, in which a life-sized robot appears as the main character, has been animated several times as a result of the hit and has achieved a certain level of commercial success. It is rare to include these in robot animation.

So please stop asking about why "Mecha is dead". It's right there. The fact is that the greats all made Mecha anime because that's what was in for the time. That's what made money.

Now that the anime market has evolved in a different direction, the best animators are doing other things because that's where the money is. Anime used to be much smaller. All the best Mecha was made by 1-3 people because that's what sold toys, and that's all who could animate the toys. It was an an illusion of a boom out of circumstance and nothing more. It's not that today is the strange world of no robot anime, Showa simply had a few people with inhuman talent. The old Mecha boom was the strange world.
